Summary: The purpose of this instructional PowerPoint is for students to compare and contrast the five regions of the United States in terms of climate, physical features, and population.

Objective: Students will be able to locate the five regions of the United States on a map, while comparing and contrasting key information about each region.

Standards: TN State Standard, Social Studies: Geography 2.19. Compare and contrast the regions of the United States (Southeast, Northeast, Great Plains, Southwest, and Pacific Northwest) in terms of climate, physical features, and population.

ISTE Standard: 3b. Research and information fluency. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media.

5 Regions of the United States

The United States is divided into 5 regions. A region is an area with common features that is set apart from other areas.

Southeast Region Facts The southeast region is made up of 12 states: South Carolina, Virginia,

West Virginia, North Carolina, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, and Louisiana.

The climate in the Southeast tends to be very mild and humid with hot summers and short winters.

Population: over 87 million people live in the Southeast region.

Physical Features: Appalachian Mountains, Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi River.

Fun Facts: “Dixie” is the nickname of the Southeast. Because of religious values, the Southeast is often know as the “Bible Belt”. The Southeast has some of the best college football in the country! (Go Vols!)

Northeast Region Facts The Northeast is made up of 11 states: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine,

Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

The climate of the Northeast varies by season. Winters are extremely cold and summers are warm and humid.

Population: Close to 56 million people live in this region.

Physical Features: Appalachian Mountains, Atlantic Ocean, Great Lakes, borders on Canada to the north.

Fun Facts: Washington D.C. is not a US state, but is considered pat of the Northeast Region. New York City is one of the largest tourist destinations in the world.

Great Plains Facts The Great Plains is divided into 10 states: Montana, North

Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico.

The climate of the Great Plains is excessive heat and cold, with violent weather patterns.

Population: over 67 million people live in this region.

Physical Features: Great Lakes, Great Plains, Mississippi River, borders Canada to the north.

Fun Facts: The Great Plains is very flat because they used to be the bed of what was once the interior sea. Large herds of wild Buffalo once lived in the Great Plains as well as Native American tribes.

Southwest Region Facts The southwest region is made up of 4 states: Arizona, New

Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.

The climate of the Southwest region has a more arid, humid, and desert climate.

Population: over 39 million people live in this region.

Physical Features: Rocky Mountains, Colorado River, Grand Canyon, Gulf of Mexico.

Fun Fact: Many western movies are filmed in this region!

Pacific Northwest Region The Pacific Northwest region is made up of 11 states: Colorado,

Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Utah, Nevada, California, Alaska, and Hawaii.

The climate is semiarid and alpine along the Rocky and Sierra Mountains, as well as Mediterranean around the coastline of California. Desert climates can be found in Nevada and Southern California.

Population: around 74 million people live in this region.

Physical Features: Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevada Mountains, Mohave Desert, borders Pacific Ocean and Canada to the north.

Fun Facts: Four mountain ranges dominate this land as well as active volcanoes. The Pacific Northwest is a great place to go on vacation!
