BEFORE STARTING A PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PROGRAM

The Carroll County Bureau of Aging and Disabilities suggests that those interested in a physical

activity program should consult with a medical professional before engaging in activities involving

physical exertion or other implications that may be inappropriate for people with certain conditions.

Prior to starting an activity you must initial consent on the intake packet.

Because class fees are necessary to pay our instructors, we ask that:

Payment for the class session is made on the first day of class.

Seniors who join a class after the beginning of the session, must still pay the full price of the class.

Should a class need to be cancelled due to inclement weather or instructor illness, a makeup date for that class will be scheduled.

Periodically throughout the year, we offer a variety of physical activity classes sponsored by Koons Toyota. Our center receives $2,000 towards these classes. Donations that are collected for these classes are used to provide additional Koons Donation classes throughout the year.

Please inquire about scholarships if you are unable to afford a class.

Our goal is to keep our seniors healthy and active!

Koons Toyota Donation Page 17

Exercise Classes Benefiting from Koons Toyota Donation!

Koons Toyota again for 2018 has supported the Senior Centers of Carroll County with another

great donation of $10,000 for our Exercise and Health programs. As we move on through the year,

South Carroll’s portion of the Koons donation is being put toward offsetting the costs of some of our

exercise classes. This is the sixth year Koons has honored the Senior Centers with a donation and

we look forward to their continued support of our wonderful programs.

Thank you Koons, you’ve made it possible for South Carroll to make great improvements to our

exercise equipment room in the past and now supporting our exercise classes you share your

belief in good health with our seniors. Many of our classes have already benefited from Koons

generous donation. Come exercise with us.

Finally It’s Planting Time

GROW is finally involved with the long overdue task of planting vegetables and flowering plants . Thanks to JoAnn Parker for supplying us with sunflower plants that will help attract bees. She also gave us tomato plants and borage that is a companion plant known to repel tomato worms and attract beneficial insects. We are hopeful that this popular gardening practice will prove successful. Her donated squash plant warranted strong protection measures that involved wrought iron furniture. All measures are sought to safeguard the garden’s plants. Cages were placed around all of these plants in hopes that the roaming wildlife will not nibble on them. Last year’s pollinator bed is teaming with emerging milkweed and many other plants that will attract bees and

butterflies. We should have a good amount of food when those monarchs make their appearance. Thank you to Ruth Lambert for donating the Shepherd’s hook to the Senior Center. We hope to incorporate it into the herb garden.

Get ready to Revive Your Tired Plants Tuesday June 5

1:30 pm Bring your plants and let us help you “revive “ them.

We will also use some of the center’s tired old plants and incorporate them with other plants.

Interested in joining a Senior Choir?

There is interest in starting a senior choir group

that will meet every Wednesday at 1:00 pm.

If interested, please sign up at the front desk!

Wake up and smell the … antioxidants?

If you think your morning cup of joe provides nothing more to your body than a jolt of caffeine, you might be pleasantly surprised to learn that your daily cup (or three) provides some health benefits as well. Drinking moderate amounts of coffee (including decaf) has been linked to lower risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease and some cancers.

And those antioxidants? Although researchers have yet to determine the exact mechanisms behind some of the disease-preventing effects, it is important to keep in mind that these compounds may be exerting other beneficial effects, such as acting as an anti-inflammatory. Coffee also contains small amounts of some nutrients, including potassium, niacin and magnesium.

Making your coffee a vehicle for fat-free milk is one way to ensure your daily calcium and vitamin D needs are met. If your diet does not include dairy, a fortified soy beverage is a calcium-rich alternative.

So how much java is too much? It's wise to stick to no more than 3 to 4 cups per day. Certain groups, such as people with hypertension and the elderly, may be more susceptible to the adverse effects of caffeine. Pregnant and breast-feeding women will want to limit intake to a maximum of 200 to 300 milligrams a day of caffeine (the amount in 2 to 3 cups of coffee). The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that pregnant women cap caffeine consumption at 200 milligrams a day.
