LEADER BIBLE STUDY Amusement parks are popular destinations for families. They are loaded with exciting
rides, cartoon characters walking about, and even some educational exhibits. It is
intriguing sometimes just to sit and watch young families scurrying through the
park. Moms and dads wheel their little ones around in strollers while older kids run
everywhere. The nuclear family has been the norm for humanity since the beginning.
In the previous session, we examined the creation of the first man and his wife. In
chapter 3, the man was called Adam, and he named his wife Eve. Even though Adam
and Eve sinned and suffered the consequences of their sin against God (Genesis 3),
they began a family. Soon their family, like most others since, began to experience
problems.
Adam and Eve had two sons, Cain and Abel. The younger, Abel, became a
shepherd, and Cain became a farmer. At some point in time, Cain made an offering
of some of his crops to God. Abel also made an offering of some of the firstborn of
his flock. For a reason that is not explained, God accepted Abel’s offering but rejected
Cain’s. The rejection angered Cain. God saw that Cain was angry and tried to warn
him of the dangers of unchecked sin. Unfortunately, the situation got much worse
(Genesis 4:8-9).
Why do children of the same parents often take different paths in life?

What do we as believers in Christ have, unlike Cain, to help us control our
emotions and resist temptation? (See Galatians 5:16-25.)

THE FIRST FAMILY—Based on Genesis 4:1-7
Adam and Eve had lived in the garden of Eden. But they chose to disobey God
and had to leave the garden to live in another place.
Eve had a baby boy. She named him Cain. Later she had another baby boy.
She named him Abel.
The boys grew up to be men. Abel became a shepherd. He took care of
sheep. Cain became a farmer. He grew food from the ground.
Adam and Eve were the first people. Cain and Abel were the first children.
They were the very first family. God planned for people to live in families.
►Recall the Bible story. Show the Teaching Picture. Ask if the kids remember the
names of the people in the story (Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel). Encourage kids to recall
other things they remember from the Bible story.
►Talk about the Life Point. Tell the kids that God made families. Adam’s family was
the first family. Print Adam’s name on the paper and point out that the Bible tells
about four people in Adam’s family. Mark four Xs beside Adam’s name. Ask each
child how many people are in her family. As you call on kids, print their names on the
paper and invite them to mark that many Xs by their names. When all kids’ families
are on the graph, encourage them to talk about what they notice. Talk about Jesus’
family. Point out that families are different, but God made them all.
►Wrap it up. Show “The First Family: Life Action” video.

GOD MADE YOU AND ME
God made the day,
God made the night,
God made everything,
Yes, that’s right!
God made the sun,
God made the moon,
God made everything,
Yes, it’s true!
He made the world, so big and round,
Oceans blue and fluffy clouds,
Chirping birds and buzzing bees,
God made you and me.

UNIT 1, SESSION 4
Adam and Eve had lived in the garden of Eden. But they chose to disobey God and had to leave the garden to live in another place. Eve had a baby boy. She named him Cain. Later she had another baby boy. She named him Abel. The boys grew up to be men. Abel became a shepherd. He took care of sheep. Cain became a farmer. He grew food from the ground. Adam and Eve were the first people. Cain and Abel were the first children. They were the very first family. God planned for people to live in families.
THE FIRST FAMILY—Based on Genesis 4:1-7

West Africa
KIMBERLY CAIN
Bible Studies For Life Kindergarten, Fall 2016 © 2016 LifeWay. Published in the United States of America
Children all over the world are important to Jesus. He loves them and wants them to learn about Him when they are very young. Christian workers, like Kimberly Cain in West Africa, love the children like Jesus does.
Sometimes Kimberly teaches kids as they sit on mats on the dusty ground. Sometimes she teaches kids at a local church where the roof is made of woven grass. That church building might not look like yours, but the children in West Africa are learning the same stories from the Bible that you are!
Kimberly uses a storying cloth to tell stories from the Bible. Each picture on the cloth tells a story. Kimberly tells children the story of creation and continues with stories about Jesus so children can grow up knowing Him and telling others about Him.
Ways to pray for the people and missionaries in West Africa:
• Pray that missionaries will be willing and able to learn the language spoken by the people so they can tell the people about Jesus.
• Pray for missionaries as they adjust to a different culture in a part of the world where the temperature stays very hot all year.
• Pray that the children of West Africa will learn to follow Jesus at a young age.
