Gun Safety Must Come First

Gun safety, especially when itcomes to children, is a big deal. In1999, 3,385 children aged 19 andyounger were killed by a gun –note this number includes homi-cides, suicides, and unintentionalinjuries. Regardless of your posi-tion on guns and gun control, peo-ple can agree that’s way toomany.

One of the main reasons so manychildren were killed is becauseparents, and people who havechildren in their homes, aren’t al-ways practicing safe and securegun storage.

If you opt to keep guns in yourhome, you give yourself the abilityto protect those you love the most. But you’ve got to keep them safe. Here’s how you can achieve both:

● Keep your gun locked andunloaded.

● If you feel the need for aloaded weapon at home, keep it on your person.

● Store ammunition in a dif-ferent location.

● Keep gun safe keys awayfrom commonly used keys.

● Children should not knowwhere guns are stored.

A gun that is unloaded, but has afull magazine beside it in yourbedside drawer, is not a securegun. Don’t store your firearms thisway.

Keeping Guns Safe withTechnology

While it’s important to teach yourkids about gun safety, you canalso use technology to help keepyour guns secure. New, smart guntechnology is becoming availableand includes a fingerprint scanner

to unlock and be able to fire thegun.

Also available soon is grip recog-nition technology that determinesan authorized gun user by themuscle tension in the gun holder’shand.

Another interesting concept forgun safety is the RFID token, which, if not within a certain prox-imity to the gun, will not allow it tofire. The token can be incorporat-ed into a ring or bracelet, so un-less the firearm is in the owner’shands, it won’t fire.

Did you know you can earn back some of your fees each year by helpingCCGC in your spare time? Members can earn back up to $60 by doingsimple tasks required to keep the ranges up and running.

Work sessions are held the Second Saturday of each month from 8:00am to Noon. Due to the age of the facility, maintenance on the targetcarriers seems to be an ongoing need, but there are also opportunitiesfor painting, cleaning, building, and more. Work weekends? Other timesmight be available; just ask!

Special projects can also be used to earn back your fees. Sponsorshipof a Board Member and approval by the Board is all it takes. Sugges-tions are welcome. Help out the Club and make your shooting a bit lessexpensive. Talk to a Board Member for more information.

Please help us keep the club going and the costs down.

Teaching Kids about GunSafety

Gun safety goes beyond securingyour weapons. Kids need to un-derstand what to do if they evercome across a gun because if youdon’t teach them, they’re going totry to figure things out on their own– and that can quickly turn deadly.

Teach children always to assumethe following:

● All guns are loaded.

● Pointing a gun at some-thing means you want todestroy it.

● Never touch the triggeruntil you’re ready to shoot.

● Be 100 percent sure ofyour target and what’s be-yond it.

If your child has play guns of anysort, from Nerf to airsoft to paint-ball, uphold gun safety rules withthese “toy” guns as well. Thisteaches them to always treat gunswith respect, even when they’renot quite “real.”

Teaching Kids to Handle Guns

Children who are taught to handleguns the appropriate way and tounderstand when and where it’sokay to use firearms are less likelyto play with guns or use them inunsafe places. These children un-derstand the importance of gunsafety and know the damage gunscan create. Therefore they’re lesslikely to handle them unauthor-ized.

Shoot fruit: By shooting canta-loupe, honeydew, and watermel-on, kids can visualize the reality ofthe force behind a firearm.

Start with a small caliber: Whileyour child might want to handlethe “big” guns, start with a smallcaliber gun. A beginning shootershould always focus on buildingshooting skills with a gun thatdoesn’t have handgrip or recoilissues. This allows the shooter tobuild skill without having to fightagainst the gun.

Have them watch: After shooting, make sure to show your child howto take the gun apart, clean it, andput it back together. This teachesthe importance of proper gunmaintenance.

Always follow the rules: Whenyou’re an adult who’s been shoot-ing for years, it’s easy to forget thesafety precautions you should beusing. Remember, If you’re shoot-ing with a child around, don’t takeshortcuts. Be safe and teach themthe right way to handle firearms. That way an educated child is asafer child and family.

The study of Ballistics really takessomeone with a scientific mind, with alittle knowledge of chemistry, physics, metallurgy, and explosives thrown in.The following definitions will not makeyou a Ballistics expert, but will helpyou speak the “right language” andencourage you to learn more aboutthe topic. - Ed.

Ballistics is the study of the motion, orflight, of projectiles from firearms.

Interior ballistics is the study of themotion of a projectile within the boreof a gun to determine the factors af-fecting it - weight, size, shape, rifling, etc.

Exterior ballistics study the flight of aprojectile after it leaves the muzzle of

a gun and the factors affecting it - airdensity, wind, velocity, etc.

Ballistic coefficient is a measurementof the efficiency of a projectile, andindicates its ability to overcome airresistance and maintain speed duringflight.

Ballistic correction is any adjustmentmade to compensate for the effect ofwind, temperature, etc. on the projec-tile’s flight.

Ballistic curve, or trajectory, is thepath taken by the projectile duringflight.

Ballistic efficiency measures the abilityof the projectile to overcome air resis-tance. It depends primarily on theweight, diameter, and shape of theprojectile.

Ballistic density is the assumed con-stant air density having the same ef-

fect on the projectile in flight as thevarious densities already encoun-tered.

Ballistic table is a table of figures forthe various factors involved in theflight of the projectile - range, anglesof departure and fall, time of flight, muzzle velocity, remaining velocity, height of trajectory, and remainingenergy. Tables are published by theammunition manufacturer for all thecartridges they make.

Ballistic wave, also called bow waveor shell wave, is a measure of the air’sdisturbance caused by the compres-sion of the air ahead of the projectilein flight.

Ballistic wind is the assumed constantwind that would have the same totaleffect on a projectile in flight as thevarious winds already encountered.
