CANINE CONDITIONING

PRESENTATION!

Join us at the April 17, 2015 membership meeting at

7:30pm to hear a brief presentation about creating a

fitness program for your canine companion!

Led by Kathleen Sanderson of EPPI llc and Dr. Odette

Suter of Odette Suter DVM.

Have you seen pictures and videos of dogs doing cool stuff on fitness equipment and want to know

more about why and how to do this too?

Did you purchase a FitPAWS peanut but don’t know what to do with it? Are you interested in creating a strength and conditioning program for your dog but don’t know

where to start?

Conditioning is very important for all dogs. From puppies to seniors, couch potatoes to competitive ath-

letes, strength and conditioning exercises are a fun and important way to improve your dog’s overall

well being.

Whatever your choice of activity with your dogs, whether it be agility, flyball, herding, IPO, nosework,

obedience, lurecoursing, or just hiking, making sure that your canine companion is up to the task is criti-

cal. Engaging in a fitness program can improve performance and help prevent injury!

At the April 17, 2015 presentation, Kathleen will discuss how strength and conditioning exercises can

increase range of motion, flexibility, reflexes, muscle tone and endurance. In addition to the incredible

physical benefits, she will discuss how these exercises provide mental stimulation, strengthen the bond

between handler and dog, and build confidence and focus. Dr. Odette Suter will discuss how fitness is an

important piece of the puzzle leading to optimal health in your companion or sport dog.

Make sure you attend the membership meeting on April 17, 2015 so that you don’t miss this exciting

new presentation!

For more information about Kathleen, visit her website at

www.eppillc.com.

For more information about Dr. Suter, visit her website at

www.odettesuter.com.

About the Instructor

Kathleen owns EPPI llc, Enhancing Peformance|Preventing Injury, a canine fitness center located in the Barrington,

IL area. EPPI offers a number of strength and conditioning services, including indoor swimming with a resistance

current, land treadmill work, and exercises using various FitPAWS equipment. Private instruction, group work-

shops, and Drop In Gym sessions are all available at EPPI’s facility. Kathleen is also available for outside work-

shops and presentations/demos.

EPPI llc was founded out of a combined love for canines, training, and fitness. Kathleen’s personal dogs are canine

athletes who compete at a high level in a number of competitive sports, including IPO, agility, and dock div-

ing. They train hard and play hard, and recognize the need for a good strength and conditioning program to en-

hance their competitive performance and prevent injury.

The desire to improve the performance of her own dogs, and prevent future injuries, inspired Kathleen to reach

out to specialists in their field to develop a strength and conditioning program for her personal dogs. That

quickly developed into a realization that all dogs, sport dogs and pet dogs alike, can benefit from specialized train-

ing in strength and conditioning. To date, Kathleen has participated in a number of canine strength and condition-

ing courses, including the following:

2013 Sports Medicine Conference - The Canine Athlete, hosted by University of Tennessee's CARES (Canine

Arthritis Rehabilitation Exercise Sports Medicine) Center for Veterinary Sports Medicine The Enigma of the Iliopsoas!, K9 Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation Course with Dr. Debbie Gross Saunders,

DPT, MSPT, Diplomat ABPTS, CCRP and Bobbie Lyons, Cert. C.F., 2013 Balance Your Blades, Understanding Shoulder Injury in Performance Dogs, K9 Injury Prevention & Rehabilita-

tion Course with Dr. Debbie Gross Saunders, DPT, MSPT, Diplomat ABPTS, CCRP and Bobbie Lyons,

Cert. C.F., 2013

K9 Conditioning I with Bobbie Lyons, Cert. C.F., 2013

K9 Conditioning II with Bobbie Lyons, Cert. C.F., 2014

K9 Fit Bone for K9 Fitness with Bobbie Lyons, Cert. C.F., 2014 Canine Fitness Trainer Certificate Program, taught by Dr. Debbie Gross Saunders, DPT, MSPT, Diplomat

ABPTS, CCRP, 2015

At the conclusion of the Canine Fitness Trainer Certificate Program in September 2015, provided successful

completion, Kathleen will be a certified Canine Fitness Trainer. In addition, Kathleen has worked closely with

her local rehab/chiro/sports medicine vets over the years including Dr. Michelle Herlihy, DVM, ACVA, Dr. Karen

Turner, DVM, CCRT, CVA, cVSMT, and Dr. Robert Gillette, DVM, MSE, DACVSMR in diagnosing and assisting

with her personal dogs.

Moreover, in 2015 Kathleen has arranged to spend a number of hours shadowing Dr. Karen Turner, DVM,

CCRT, CVA, cVSMT at her veterinary rehabilitation and integrative medicine practice at Companion Animal Spe-

cialty and Emergency Hospital in Crystal Lake, IL. And finally, EPPI is hosting Bobbie Lyons, Cert C.F. for a week-

end of canine conditioning workshops March 7-9, 2015. This opportunity will provide Kathleen with the opportu-

nity to closely observe Bobbie work with more than 40 dogs over a three-day period.

EPPI has previously hosted a number of local strength and conditioning workshops, the first of which was specifi-

cally attended by Dr. Karen Turner so that she could provide her feedback on the exercises and the way that

Kathleen was presenting the material. Kathleen has received all positive feedback from her workshops, and the

material was well received by all attending, including Dr. Karen Turner.

General Meeting Minutes

2-20-15

The meeting was called to order at 7:32 PM. Silvia moved to accept the October 2014 minutes; Gary C. seconded.

Secretary: Updates since our October 2014 meeting:

Nancy Golemba – broke both wrists.

Jan Mysliwiec – lost her dog Kaia.

Suzi Scholtz – her mother passed away.

Carol VanderMey – her mother passed away.

Member Tom Treptow passed away on January 19th. The family specified “in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to:

As Good as Gold-Golden Retriever Rescue.” A $100 donation to As Good as Gold in memory of Tom Treptow was sent on

January 23rd.

Lisa Deal - mother passed away.

Ed and Doris Barys – lost their dog Kacie.

Eleanor Jackson had surgery.

Kimberly Barker – lost her dog Gusto.

Nancy Foster - lost her dog Lark.

Carolyn Grieves - was in a car accident and broke her hand.

Lifetime Membership: Amber presented Anne Copeland.

The current roster indicates that she was voted in as a member in April 2008. The caveat is her prior membership from 1969 to

1984/1985. The records that I personally have only go back to 1990. I don't have anything older than when I became Secretary at that

time. When we moved from Palatine to Algonquin, most of those old paper files that pre-dated me were destroyed as they were in

very bad shape. That being said I have no means to neither prove nor disprove her prior membership with us, or her active participa-

tion from 1969 to 1984/1985.

Heide moved to vote Anne in for Lifetime Membership; Gary V. seconded; all approved.

Treasurer: approximately $141,000 combined, which is an increase compared to 2013 at this time (was approx. $101,000) and 2012

(was approx. $114,000.) Please feel free to see Jim if you have any questions or would like more information.

President: none.

Vice President: none.

DOT: sign-up sheets are out for new classes.

Training Hall Secretary: Ditto. Sign-up sheets are out.

DOAT: Two new Foundation classes haven been added and are being held on Saturdays at 3:00 and 4:00 PM. There are only 5-6

people per class. Two new sets of weaves are coming soon.

Committee Reports:

Fun Matches: Karen advised they are going well. We now accept PayPal which is up and running.

Service Credits: Dana advised that they are up to date through our Barn Hunt event. Patti then took a moment to explain vol-

unteering requires no experience. We will train you! J

Membership: 215 members {44 F, 135 I, and 36 L.} The renewal forms are out. Please return them ASAP. Please send them in

early so Barb doesn’t have to chase you at the last minute!

Nose Work: Added a new class on Mondays at 6 pm, which is now full. Jim advised that we will be holding a fun match at St.

John’s Lutheran Church in Algonquin. We need to practice at different areas. We are looking for inside areas more so than

outside. It is harder to find venues willing to let us inside. Jim added that Nose Work searches entail the following: exte-

rior, interior, outer vehicle searches, and container searches.

AKC Rally & Obedience 2014: $1200 profit at last year’s trials.

Barn Hunt Match 2/14/15: turned the building into a barn! J Lots of straw. We received a lot of good feedback. Cheryl

Moore’s husband took great pictures which are posted on his site. We will be holding a Barn Hunt Trial on 8/22 & 8/23

which will be a titling event. Stay tuned on that!

Awards Banquet 3/8/15: Reservations close on Weds 2/25. We have 66 attendees to date. $25 per person. Brunch is being held

at the Cary Country Club. The brochure was in the newsletter.

UKC Rally Trials: 3/21 & 3/22.

Agility Trial 5/1 – 5/3, 2015: We will have our 2015 trial at the McCook site. It will offer the same 3 days (Fri-Sun) and 2 rings.

First Received. Please volunteer!

New for this year: “Glory Run” on Friday only, specifically for older dogs who have an agility title. We’re renting our equipment from Annette Narel this year.

Cheryl Moore – Hospitality. Adrienne Ostrowski and Ken Smith are Co-Chairmen.

Due to the new location which is further south, we will be opening up the worker list for non-members as well. There is

currently an on-line sign up available. Lots of jobs to do! Adrienne will post the link to the on-line sign up on our member

email list. The premium is on our website.

Member Ring Rental: Patti reminded all -- please contact her if you want to rent a building or ring space. She maintains the

book, and this will make sure there are no conflicts.

AKC Rally & Obedience 2015: Arlene King is retiring and moving to Michigan this spring. We will need a *new* trial chairman.

Yvonne Smith will be trial secretary.

New Business: (Amber) we will be having a guest speaker at our April 17th general meeting. Our guest speaker will be presenting

on the topic of “Canine Strength and Conditioning.” A vet will accompany her. Amber encouraged all to attend as this topic is

relevant to the health of all our dogs, and transcends to any venue you are involved in. We will offer a subsequent 3 hour Work-

shop (for members only) depending on interest. Stay tuned. A flyer will be published shortly.

Old Business: none.

Brags: were shared.

Karen moved to adjourn the meeting; Ed seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:25 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Amber Perri, Secretary

Nose Work

News Score Reports are due by December 31, 2015!! At its annual awards banquet, NOCI recognizes titles and

major awards won by its members by giving each handler/

dog team a plaque listing its accomplishments. Each year the

plaque is updated to reflect new

accomplishments.

As written in the club bylaws, this is what you must do to

be eligible for a plaque:

1. Submit a written record of your accomplishment on an

NOCI score report form. Score reports should be

submitted online at tinyurl.com/nociscore, placed in the

“Woof Box” in the club office, or mailed to the awards

chairperson (Judy Gemperline). Score reports must be

submitted by December 31 of the year in which the title

was earned. If you do not meet the deadline, the

club will not pay for the engraving/plaque. 2. Provide two services to the club during the last 12

months. Fill out the service form so we have a record. 3. Attend at least one general membership meeting

during the last 12 months.

Be sure to sign the attendance sheet whenever you attend a

meeting. Due to the increasing number and expense of

these awards, the club will be adhering to these guide-

lines very strictly.

Dear NOCI members-

Over the past several years, many members have approached me with questions about the awards

program (plaques). I sense that there are many more people who are unaware of or confused

about the procedures. So I have put together the following FAQs. Hope it helps!

Judy G

PLAQUE FAQs

1. I hear people talking about their “plaques”- what are they?

Each plaque is a wooden board, about 12 inches wide and 17 inches tall. On top is a large plate with the dog’s name

and breed. Below are 18 brass plates, each listing a title or award earned by you and your dog. Each year, the plaque

gets updated with new titles. A smaller plaque, about half the size, with only six plates is also available.

2. What do I have to do to get one?

You have to meet three criteria to be eligible

1. Submit a score report for each title you and your dog earn by the end of the year.

2. Provide at least one service for the club during the year. (Fill out the service form)

3. Attend at least one general membership meeting during the year (sign the roster)

If you are eligible, you receive a letter in January listing the titles and awards for the plaque. Check it for accuracy

and return it so that the plaque can be made or updated. You will receive the plaque in March at the awards ban-

quet. Detailed instructions come with the award letter

3. How do I submit a score report?

Go to tinyurl.com/nociscore and enter the information about your title. Don’t forget to hit “submit.” Or download

the form from the club website, fill it in, and place it in the “WOOF Box” in the club office, or mail to the awards

chairperson (Judy Gemperline)

4. Do I have to wait for my official title certificate before submitting a score report?

No. You may submit a title as soon as you earn it. Waiting for the official certificate may cause you to miss the

deadline. You may wait until December to submit score reports for the entire year, but it is recommended that you

submit titles as they are earned.

5. I got a qualifying leg, but not a title. Do I need to submit this?

You may, but it is not required. Members who submitted Qs but did not earn titles are listed in each issue of the

Fireplug.

6. I received a national ranking for 2014, but it wasn’t announced until 2015. Have I missed the deadline for

reporting this award?

No. Since these rankings are not issued until the following year, the deadlines for these are the following December.

For example, 2014 rankings have a deadline of December 31, 2015.

7. I made a mistake entering my information online. What do I do?

Email the awards chairperson (Judy Gemperline [email protected]) and explain the error. She will get it corrected

in the club’s record.

8. I forgot whether I submitted a particular title. What should I do?

The entire spreadsheet is available at tinyurl.com/nociscorereports. You can search within the spreadsheet, but you

will not be able to edit it. Or you could just enter the title again.

9. I missed the year-end deadline. Now what?

If you submit a title late, the club does not pay for the engraving. If you have a plaque on which the title will fit, you

will have to reimburse the club for the engraving. However, if you do not already have a plaque, or your plaque is

full, you would have to pay for a new plaque as well.

Meet the committee that put together the club’s Barn Hunt Fun Match.:

Patti Burgess, Yvonne Smith, Bonnie Gutzwiler, Jan Sund, Cheryl Kistner, Cheryl Moore, and Carol Block.

After our Barn Hunt seminar back in November 2014, the committee spent many months planning (building gates and ramps,

loading programs, organizing volunteers, purchasing straw & making novelty items) for the club’s Barn Hunt Fun Match.

On Valentine’s Day, we had approx. 95 dogs with their handlers come out in the extremely cold weather to play Barn Hunt.

Many dogs were successful in finding the rat(s). Some like myself, as with Riley, need to recognize our dog’s signal when lo-

cating a rat. As the phase goes, “Trust your Dog’s Instinct!”

There was a enormous amount of energy and enthusiasm provided by handlers and dogs at the match. It was a great learning

experience for our Barn Hunt newbies. All our volunteers were super! And let’s not forget our wonderful little helpers

“The Rats”. Without them, there would be no Barn Hunt. We performed an orderly/smooth Fun Match that ended on a

positive.

Currently, we are planning for our Sanctioned Barn Hunt Trial in August. Hope to see you then.

Yvonne Smith

Barn Hunt Trial Secretary
