Running Ransom Road: Confronting the Past

One Marathon at a Time, (Houghton Mifflin

Harcourt, Oct. 9, 2012) is equal parts mem-

oir, running journey, and recovery tale. The

story took me back to old sinning grounds in

places such as Burlington, Vt., Boston, New York City,

and Moscow, Russia. There, I ran marathons, confront-

ing the bad old days in a bib number and running shoes.

This just in….New Training Starting!!

Heart rate, effort and time based training. Come out

and see what we have to offer. We have a program for

Runners and FITNESS Walkers, whatever your needs,

we are here!!

Saturday, Gilchrist Park (small pavilion) @ 7:00 am

Monday, Harold Court, Free Parking Garage (level D)

@ 6:00 pm

Wednesday, Laishley Park @ 6:00 pm

We just finished our biggest month providing timing services at area rac-es. Most mornings had us setting up in near or complete darkness. We crossed barges to Palm Island, went over bridges to get to beautiful Boca Grande and we worked in unseasonably freezing cold temperatures at Oscar Sherer State Park. Volunteering is a great way to stay connected to running, meet other runners and club members, get a great view of the action at the fin-ish line, and share your talents while supporting Zoomers. All of your support makes our job at these races a lot easier. Thank you!

The month of March has Zoomers providing timing at the St. Patty's 8k in Venice on the 14th. If interested in volunteering, please contact me. We encourage our members to support this race and also the inaugural Chocolate Fantasia 7k Night Run on March 28 in Punta Gorda sponsored by the Foot Landing and the 1-2-3 Runners Foundation. The race will benefit the Tender Hearts Partner-ship. Early in April (4th) is the inaugural Harbour Heights Half Marathon. We al-so encourage our members to support this new race in the area.

Good luck with your running and your races in the coming months.

ZOOMERS IS LOOKING FOR LEADERS Zoomers is looking for leaders to organize group runs throughout the year. Group runs accomplish many goals for a club or training program; they bring people togeth-er, both seasoned and newer runners. They create a social atmosphere for the group that supports a runner’s training needs, and more. Organizing and leading a group run is an important responsibility. To help ensure your group runs are well organized and safe, The RRCA has issued the following guidelines for leading a group run. The run leader or a designated individual participating in the group run should have current CPR and First Aid certifications. The run leader should map out the route(s) using a GPS or mapping tool.. Clearly outline the distance(s) for the run. The run leader should outline pace groups and recruit pace leaders. The run lead-er should also identify water stops on the route and recruit volunteers to deliver water or man water stops if none is readily available on the route. The run leader should recruit a back of the pack runner or sweeper who carries a cell phone in the case of confrontations or emergencies. The run leader or social chair should identify new members and/or guests and en-sure they have signed a waiver before the run begins. If they can’t remember whether or not they have signed a waiver, have a few extra copies available to fill out. Or have a waiver printed at the top of a page and have all runners sign the page. DO NOT let anyone run with the group if they refuse to sign a waiver or follow the rules of the group run. The run leader should provide clear instructions as to the route, the various paces for the group, the turn around point, the terrain, the hydration support (is water provid-ed or should participants bring their own?), etc. The run leader should provide the “rules of the run.” Remember you are leading the run and assuming responsibility for the group’s well being. The group should follow the “ranger rules”, which means leave no one behind for any reason. Everyone in the group should obey all traffic signs. Use sidewalks and trails for group runs as much as possible, The run leader or a designated volunteer should be the last one to leave post-run If you are interested in leading a group run for Zoomers please contact ED Gillen @ [email protected] These are just a few guidelines, for more info on group runs go to RRCA site @ http://www.rrca.org/education-advocacy/guidelines-for-leading-a-group-run/

dreams and turn fanta-sies into realities.

Look for a Virgo during your next road race. Pretend to have a hurt leg to appeal to Virgo’s desire to do the right thing. You might feel like a fish out of water but this feeling will quickly fade as you avoid feeling alone and feel connected to your new companion. Your fantasy of having a life-long running partner will turn into a reality as you cross the fin-ish line together!

Cherry-Coconut Recovery

Shake Makes 2

Research on Marathon runners has shown that drinking tart cherry juice can help reduce postrun muscle soreness.

If the juice is to tart for your taste, try it in a smoothie like this one, which also uses sweeter fruits like strawberries.

Coconut water-the clear liquid found inside coconuts– contains none of the fat found in coconut milk and adds a

tangy, light, almondlike flavor. It also provides a dose of electrolytes, making this shake just as ideal before a run as

after.

1 Container (11 ounces) coconut water

1 cup tart cherry juice

1 scoop unflavored or vanilla soy protein powder

1/2 cup unsweetened frozen strawberries

1 frozen banana, cut into chunks

Combine the coconut water, juice, protein powder, strawberries, and banana in a blender.

Process until smooth.

Nutrition: 220 Calories, 46 g carbs, 2 g fiber, 10 g protein, 1 g total fat, 0.5 g saturated fat, 58 g sodium.
