Example of juxtaposition artworks
Mind map
Drawing photo that I drew and
took which shows my idea
For the final art project theme, I chose juxtaposition
because when I heard open, force, and juxtaposition,
I only just noticed what does juxtaposition art means than
other two themes. So I thought it will be easier to chose
juxtaposition.
My first idea was the contrast between two things for
example contrast between dark and light rooms, different
colors of eyes or condition of flowers.

Beau Bernier Frank is a 24years old self-taught
surrealist painter. He was born in Southern
California in 1993 and a French-American. He
started to do art by juxtaposing portraits and
landscapes after diagnosing a form of spinal
arthritis in 2015. He said his artworks means
coping with reality and fighting with his disease.
He is working at his studio which is located in
California Coast now.
For this artwork, he used the same technics
which drawing a landscape instead of the face.
Because he chose summer, I chose spring.
That’s why I colored with many kinds of colors.
For me, his work looked a little bit of
emptiness because of monochrome of person.
Since I chose summer, I tried to express kind of
joyfulness.

WORK PROCESS AND EXPLANATIONIt took almost three hours to choose this
idea. When I drew a girl, I thought it will be
nice to draw two whales instead of hair. It
was
really unexpected idea but I was so happy
that I can start for the first time.
All materials that I used or spent: Brain,
eraser, hand, palette, ruler, mechanical
pencil, pencil, paintbrush, sticker, time,
watercolor paper, and watercolor paint.
Difficulty: Even though my them was
juxtaposition, my work had so much curly
hair. To express hair detail and more
naturally, it spent more than ten hours
only for hair. It made me hard to focus on
drawing. After, I eventually forgot how to
color it.

The title of my final work is Underwater Whale Girl. This name might be so simple to hear, but I think it can attract people.
When you hear the title of my work, you will imagine a girl and whale. First, the girl is located in the middle of the work. And
instead of her forelock, there are exact same sky-blue two whales. The girl whose hair color made of blue, green, and purple is
wearing a navy color simple dress. Her torso is ended with bubbles and the background color is pink.
I had many ideas at first. They were most of the contrast between two different things. However, I thought
If I choose those ideas, I will not enjoy drawing. So I decided to change the idea. Honestly, I didn’t get any inspiration for this
underwater whale girl. While I just drawing a big girl in the middle, I just thought her forelock looked like a whale. It was the most
unexpected idea since I start drawing. Not only that reason but also I didn’t draw whale before. It is true that it is hard to
connect with something. Otherwise, I tried to create a new way of drawing for composition ideas. The snail work also created
unexpectedly due to I ruin to draw
Nice snail shell.
I really love my this artwork than other works because this is the artwork which I enjoyed and concentrated the most while I
am working. I used many new watercolor techniques, especially for the hair. If I can start again, I will do exactly same. I am already
satisfied with my work. I want to display my artwork on any school wall because I think I did pretty well this time. I am proud of my
artwork. For the last, I got to commit to coloring through Cindy. She commented me which part should I fix. Of course, I agreed
and accepted them. If she didn’t give me such a great comment, my work won’t look good.
I didn’t use any straight line this time. I wanted to give smooth feeling to a girl’s long curly hair. I used in the total of three
colors; blue, green, and purple. Because I used only cool color in hair part, I colored the background with pink so that give cool
and warm colors at the same time. One thing that I couldn’t do was drawing seashells on the top of the work. Except for middle
part, there is big space next to her. During the work, I considered about the two whales a lot between coloring them with same or
different. In the end, I colored them with the same color for balance. I think that was a good choice because if I colored
differently, it could be hard to catch a whale. And also, even though my theme was juxtaposition, I think emphasis the hair part
the most cause I spent most of the time just for hair. It was difficult at first, but also fun.
