Dear Pilgrims,I am honored to invite you to join this

pilgrimage to Israel and Jordan. "Andwherever he went, to villages, towns orfarms, they laid the sick in the marketplaceand begged him to let them touch just thefringe of his cloak. And all those whotouched him were cured." In a letter aboutpilgrimages, Pope John Paul II spoke of thefact that there are special times of grace(kairos), just as there are also specialspaces or places of grace, like those placeswhere Christ himself walked.

The Holy Land must have a specialplace in the hearth of every Christian. It isnot possible for every follower of Christ towalk in those lands where Christ lived. Butwe can do so.

A Pilgrimage is a special time to meetGod and to prepare ourselves for ourjourney to heaven. During our Pilgrimageyou will participate on Daily Mass, touchholy places and meet people who arewitnesses of the Gospel.

Israel ... Land of the Bible ... Land of Faith ... the Holy Land, revered throughout recorded history as thecradle of monotheistic religion. For a person of faith whose beliefs are rooted in the Bible, there is noplace on earth like the Holy Land, in this narrow strip of land lies the source of religious belief of muchof mankind. Here, amongst the barren hills and fertile plains, man’s spirit learned to soar, and fromhere a new message went out to all the world: “... and many peoples shall come, and say, ‘Come, letus go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that He may teach us His waysand that we may walk in His paths’. For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord fromJerusalem” (Isaiah 2:3-4). For nearly 2,000 years, Christian visitors from all over the world have cometo the Holy Land, the land of their spiritual heritage. With Bible in hand, they have walked in the placesJesus walked, and prayed in the places He preached and prayed. For Christians, Israel is a place likeno other. It provides them a one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience the land of the Bible, to deepentheir faith, and to be spiritually transformed.

Jaffa - Joppa: (Acts 9 36-42): Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha... she was sick, and died... But Peter ... presented her alive".

St. Peter's churchThe steeple of St. Peter's Church in Old Jaffa, overlooking the picturesque fishing port, has for over a century been a beacon signaling to sea-weary pilgrims that the Holy Land was near.

The church’s charming red brick facade is an unusual accent in a city built of stone; its interior, with vaulted ceilings, stained-glass windows, marble-covered walls and a huge painting over the altar of Peter's visitation by an angel, recalls churches in the Italian tradition.

Caesarea Maritima (Greek: παράλιος Καισάρεια), called CaesareaPalaestina from 133 CE onwards, was a city and harbor built by Herod theGreat about 25–13 BC. Today, its ruins lie on the Mediterranean coast ofIsrael about halfway between the cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa, on the site ofPyrgos Stratonos ("Strato" or "Straton's Tower", in Latin Turris Stratonis).Caesarea Maritima should not be confused with other cities named toflatter the Caesar: Caesarea Philippi in the Golan Heights or CaesareaMazaca in Anatolian Cappadocia. The city was described in detail by the1st century Roman Jewish historian Josephus (Jewish Antiquities XV.331;Jewish War I.408).

Herod built his palace on a promontory jutting out into the sea, with a decorative poolsurrounded by stoas. In 13 BCE, Caesarea became the civilian and military capital ofJudaea, and the official residence of the Roman procurators and governors, PontiusPilatus, praefectus and Antonius Felix. Remains of the principal buildings erected byHerod and the medieval town are still visible today, including the city walls, the castleand a Crusader cathedral and church.

Early Christian mentions of Caesareain the apostolic period follow the actsof Peter who established the churchthere when he baptized Cornelius theCenturion (Acts, 10, 11). The ApostlePaul often sojourned there (9:30;18:22; 21:8), and was imprisoned atCaesarea for two years before beingtaken to Rome (23:23, 25:1-13).

Promontory Palace Josephus called this a "most

magnificent palace" that Herod the Great built on a promontory jutting out into

the waters of Caesarea. The pool in the center was nearly

Olympic in size, and was filled with fresh water. A statue once stood in the

center. Paul may have been imprisoned on the grounds of

this palace (Acts 23:35).

Mt. Carmel Symbol of Beauty

Biblically, Mt. Carmel is referenced mostoften as a symbol of beauty and fertility. Tobe given the "splendor of Carmel" was tobe blessed indeed (Isa 35:2). Solomonpraised his beloved: "your head crownsyou like Mount Carmel" (Song 7:5). But forCarmel to wither was a sign of devastatingjudgment (Nahum 1:4).

Elijah's Victory

Haifa is the international headquarters for the Baha'iFaith, which began amidst persecution in Persia inthe mid-19th century. Baha'is believe in the unity ofall religions and believe that messengers of God likeMoses, Jesus and Muhammad have been sent atdifferent times in history with doctrines varying to fitchanging social needs, but bringing substantially thesame message.

The Bahá’í Gardens in Haifa

The Bahá’í Gardens in Haifa comprise astaircase of nineteen terraces extending allthe way up the northern slope of MountCarmel. The geometry of the complex isbuilt around the axis connecting it with theCity of ‘Akko, which also has great historicaland sacred significance for Bahá’ís. At itsheart stands the golden-domed Shrine ofthe Báb, which is the resting place of theProphet-Herald of the Bahá’í Faith.

Nazareth (Hebrew: ,נצרת Hebrew Natz'rat or Natzeret, Arabic:الناصرة an-Nāṣira or an-Naseriyye) is the capital and largest city inthe North District of Israel. It also serves as an Arab capital forIsrael's Arab citizens who make up the vast majority of thepopulation there. In the New Testament, the city is described as thechildhood home of Jesus, and as such is a center of Christianpilgrimage, with many shrines commemorating biblical associations.

According to Luke, Nazareth was the home of Joseph and Mary and the site of the Annunciation, when Mary was told by the Angel Gabriel that she would have Jesus as her son. Nazareth is alsowhere Jesus grew up from some point in his childhood. In the Gospel of Matthew, Joseph andMary settle in Nazareth after returning to Israel from In John 1:46, Nathaniel asks, "Can anythinggood come out of Nazareth?" The meaning of this cryptic question is debated. Somecommentators suggest that it means Nazareth was very small and unimportant. But the questiondoes not speak of Nazareth’s size but of its goodness. In fact, Nazareth was described negativelyby the evangelists, for it did not believe in Jesus and “he could do no mighty work there” (Gospelof Mark 6:5). In all four gospels we read the famous saying, “A prophet is not without honorexcept in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house” (Gospel of Matthew13:57; Mk 6:4; Lk 4:24; Gospel of John 4:44). In one passage the Nazarenes even attempt to killJesus by throwing him off a cliff (Lk 4:29). Nazareth, being the home of those near and dear toJesus.

Church of Annunciation A Byzantine church was built

over the place where it is believed that the angel

Gabriel announced the birth of Jesus to the virgin

Mary. In 1966 the Roman Catholic Church began

constructing a new basilica over these remains and today this church is the

largest church building in the. Middle East.

The Greek Orthodox Church nearby is built over the town's water source.

Cana of Galilee. In the Christian New Testament, the Gospel oF John refers a numberof times to a town called Cana of Galilee.Cana is best known as the place where, according to the Fourth Gospel, Jesusperformed his tenth miracle (scholars would note that it was His first miracle in Cana, acknowledging that His disciples were present at the feast, but with him in Capernaumwhere Mark records miracles after the temptation; Mark 1:25,31,34.), the turning of alarge quantity of water into wine at a wedding feast (John 2:1-11) when the wineprovided by the bridegroom had run out. None of the synoptic gospels record thisevent, but in John's gospel it has considerable symbolic importance: it is the first of theseven miraculous "signs" by which Jesus’ divine status is attested, and around whichthe gospel is structured. In Roman Catholicism, the Wedding at Cana is one of theLuminous Mysteries of the Rosary.

Mount Tabor sits at the eastern end of the Jezreel Valley, 11 miles(17 km) west of the Sea of Galilee. Its elevation at the summit is1,843 feet (575 m) high. It is used in Scripture as a symbol ofmajesty. Jeremiah 46:18. “‘As I live,’ declares the King whosename is the Lord of hosts, ‘Surely one shall come who looms up likeTabor among the mountains, Or like Carmel by the sea’” (cf. Ps89:12). Early Church fathers believed that the Transfiguration tookplace on Mt. Tabor, including Cyril of Jerusalem (in 348), Epiphanius, and Jerome.

Basilica of the Transfiguration. The date of the earliest churches on Mt. Tabor isunknown. The Anonymous Pilgrim of Piacenza saw three basilicas in 570.Willibaldus, in 723, mentions only one church dedicated to Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. There may have been three chapels joined together into one building, as in thepresent building. The current church was built in 1924 and belongs to theFranciscans.

Mount of Beatitudes. The so-called "Sermon on the Mount" isrecorded in Matthew 5-7 andLuke 6. The alleged discrepancybetween Matthew's versionbeing on a hill and Luke's beingon a level place is easilyreconciled with observation ofmany level places on theGalilean hillsides. Scripturegives no indication of the exactlocation of this event, but theByzantines built a church tocommemorate it at the bottom ofthe hill. Some of Napoleon'smen placed it on the nearbyArbel mountain.

Page 24: The Fifth Gospel - Holy Land and Jordan In The Footsteps ...The Fifth Gospel Holy Land and Jordan in the Footsteps of Jesus May 14 –May 27, 2018 For nearly 2,000 years, Christian

The suggestion of this hill for the location of the Sermon on the Mount is agood one. Once known as Mt. Eremos, this hill is located betweenCapernaum and Tabgha and is just above the "Cove of the Sower." Thisspacious hillside provides much room for crowds to gather, as evidenced bypreparation for 100,000 Catholics to observe mass nearby with the Pope'svisit in March 2000 (it rained and fewer came, but the space was available).

The buildingwhich was constructed bythe noted architect AntonioBarluzzi is full of numericalsymbolism. The rediscovered remains ofCapharnaum help us to setseveral passages of theGospels in the human andphysical context of that site. Welearn from the Gospels thatJesus left Nazareth and settledin Capharnaum (Mt 4:12) whichin some way became "his owntown" (Mt 9:1). ActuallyCapharnaum much more thanNazareth offered to Jesus atwofold advantage as far as hismessianic activity wasconcerned.

Page 26: The Fifth Gospel - Holy Land and Jordan In The Footsteps ...The Fifth Gospel Holy Land and Jordan in the Footsteps of Jesus May 14 –May 27, 2018 For nearly 2,000 years, Christian

Firstly, Capharnaum was acrossroad of primary importance, being along the Beth-shan --Damascus highway; whereasNazareth was a mountainous andisolated hamlet. Secondly,Capharnaum was sufficiently apartfrom the big centers and especiallyfrom Tiberias where Herod Antipashad set his capital. In that way Jesuswas able to spread his messianicmessage to many persons withoutrunning too soon into trouble with thepolitical and religious leaders. Incontrast to Nazareth, the populationof Capharnaum was highly stratified:fishermen, farmers, artisans, merchants, publicans etc. Lived inthe same village, but apparentlywithout any strident economicalinequality. Even the relationsbetween the inhabitants ofCapharnaum and the Romans weresurprisingly cordial. It was a Romancenturion who built the synagoguefor the Jewish community, while theelders of the village reciprocated inkindness and pleaded earnestly withJesus asking him to heal thecenturion's servant (Lk 7:1-10).

All in all, the inhabitants ofCapharnaum were hard workers, parsimonious and open-minded; tothose people Jesus addressed himselfwhile in Capharnaum and from thesame community Jesus chose manyof his apostles either amongfishermen (Peter, Andrew, James,John - Mt 4:12-22) or publicans(Matthew - Mk 2:13).

Tabgha (Hebrew שבעעין EinSheva‘), an area situated onthe north-western shore of theSea of Galilee in Israel, is thetraditional site of the miracle ofthe multiplication of the loavesand fishes (Mark 6:30-46) and the third resurrectionappearance of Jesus (John21:1-24) in Christianity. Thecults name is derived from theGreek name Heptapegon("seven springs"). St. Jeromereferred to Tabgha as "thesolitude" (=eremos).

Church of the Multiplication. The earliest building at Tabgha was a smallchapel built in the 4th century A.D. This was probably the shrine describedby the pilgrim Egeria at the end of the 4th century: "In the same place (notfar from Capernaum) facing the Sea of Galilee is a well watered land inwhich lush grasses grow, with numerous trees and palms. Nearby areseven springs which provide abundant water. In this fruitful garden Jesusfed five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish."

The mosaic of the fish and loaves is laid next to a largerock, which has caused some New Testament scholarsto speculate that the builders of the original churchbelieved that Jesus stood on this rock when he blessedthe fish and loaves just before the feeding of the crowdwho had come to hear him.

Church of the Primacy of St Peter. The Church of the Primacy ofSt Peter (north of the Church of the Multiplication) was built on rocksat the shore of the Sea of Galilee. This area is traditionallyconsidered to be the place where Jesus appeared the third time afterhis resurrection (John 21:1-24). According to Catholic beliefs duringthis appearance Jesus conferred on Simon Peter again the Primacyover the church.

Peter's Primacy In John 21, Jesus met again with the disciples for the "last

breakfast." Here he restored Peter to himself after the disciple's three denials by asking him three times if Peter loved Jesus. Catholic tradition associates this event with

the naming of Peter as the singular leader of the church. The rock at left is the traditional place where

Jesus stood and called out to the disciples.

Day 06BETLEHEM EIN KEREM

Bethlehem (Arabic: لحمبيت , lit "House of Meat"; Greek: Βηθλεέμ Bethleém;Hebrew: לחםבית , Beit Lehem, lit "House of Bread") is a Palestinian city inthe central West Bank, approximately 10 kilometers (6 mi) south ofJerusalem, with a population of about 30,000 people. It is the capital of theBethlehem Governorate of the Palestinian National Authority and a hub ofPalestinian culture and tourism.According to the New Testament, Bethlehem is the birthplace of Jesus ofNazareth. The town is inhabited by one of the oldest Christian communitiesin the world, though the size of the community has shrunk in recent yearsdue to emigration. The city is also believed to be the birthplace of David andthe location where he was crowned as the king of Israel.

The Gospel of Matthew account implies that the familyalready lived in Bethlehem when Jesus was born, and latermoved to Nazareth. Matthew reports that Herod the Great, told that a 'King of the Jews' has been born in Bethlehem, ordered the killing of all the children aged two and under inthe town and surrounding areas. Joseph is warned of this ina dream, and the family escapes this fate by fleeing toEgypt and returning only after Herod has died. But beingwarned in another dream not to return to Judea, Josephwithdraws the family to Galilee, and goes to live in Nazareth

The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem ranks amongst the most importantChristian Holy Places throughout the Christian World - perhaps it is even itsholiest. Millions of Christians around the globe relate to this place through theOne, Jesus Christ, who was born here.Throughout the centuries, millions of Christians have visited the Holy Land toaffirm and deepen their faith

Birth PlaceAccording to tradition,

Mary gave birth to Jesus at the place of

where the star is located on the

floor. The tradition that the birth was in a cave

is one of the oldest Christian

traditions. Justin Martyr mentions it in the mid-2nd century,

as does the Protoevangelium

of James (also 2nd

c.).Origen notes that

the cave of Jesus' birth was pointed out in his day and no doubt this was the same place where the Byzantine church was erected.

Day 07JERUSALEM

Jerusalem, according to Jewish tradition, ismentioned in the Torah (Genesis 14:18), as the city ofSalem. Abraham, who met Melchizedek, King ofSalem, received a blessing from him there.Rabbi David Kimche, a medieval Jewishcommentator, explains that Salem refers toJerusalem, which was a place of Zedek -righteousness and Salem - peace. The Midrash, based on Genesis 22:14, teaches thatAbraham brought his son Isaac to be sacrificed there.''And Abraham called the place, G-d will be seen'' -Yireh. Melchizedek , on the other hand called theplace – Salem. The Almighty decided to affect acompromise , reflecting both the opinion of Abraham& Melchizedek. We stop for the Holy Mass at the chapel of Dominus Flevit where our Lord wept and shed a tear for the city of Jerusalem (Luke 19: 37- 42)

Dominus Flevit ChurchBuilt in 1955 to commemorate the Lord's weeping over Jerusalem, Dominus Flevit

features a beautiful view of the city through its distinct chapel window. Excavations during construction of the church uncovered a number of

ossuaries (bone boxes) from the time of Jesus with numerous inscriptions.

We than proceed to the Garden of Gethsemane and pray at thechurch of All Nations (Church of Gethsemane), where Jesus prayed:"Father, if thou art willing, remove this cup from me,nevertheless not my will, but thy, be done".

Garden of GethsemaneEarly Christian pilgrims located the Garden of Gethsemane at the bottom of the slope

of the Mt. of Olives opposite the Temple Mount. Byzantine, Crusader and a modern church were built successively on the site where it is believed that Jesus prayed to the Father hours before his

crucifixion. The modern Church of All Nations has a beautiful mosaic on its facade.

Day 08JERUSALEM

Church of St. Anne and Pool of BethesdaThis church, erected during the first half of thetwelfth century, blends admirably traditionalRomanesque features and the architecturalprinciples followed at the time of the Crusades. It is numbered among the longest preservedsacred places in the city, since according totradition it arose over the place where oncestood the house of Joachim and Anne, theparents of the Virgin, who is supposed to havebeen born here. The interior has an aisled naveand exquisite capitals on the pillars sustainingthe arches of the vault. A stairway leads down tothe Crypt, held to be the birthplace of the Virgin. The Pool of Bethesda is very close to the Churchof St. Anne, near the Lions Gate. The imposingremains of a pool with two baths and fiveporches confirm the story told in the Gospelaccording to John. There was once a gate therecalled the Sheep Gate, near where a sheepmarket was held, and animals to be used in thecity's sacrifices were washed in the pool. In thisplace Jesus performed the healing of a cripple(John, 5 1-9).

Holy of Holies: The Weeping Walland Dome of the RockHeld sacred by many religious, Jerusalem isprobably the most holy city in the world. To the Jewsit is Zion, the City of David and Solomon's temple, and the heartland of the Israelite nation. The Jewscall this sacred site in Jerusalem's Old City TempleMount after the temple built by Solomon in the 5thcentury BC to replace Herod's 10th centuryconstructed temple. Herod's temple was destroyedby Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon who plundered thetemple for the enshrined Ark of the Covenant. Theybelieve the site is where Abraham prepared tosacrifice his son Isaac, and some claim that this isthe 'Holy of Holies' because when God created theworld, light first shone here.

They interpreted the site as beingthe place of the "Night Journey"written of in the Qu'ran, whereMuhammad journeyed from Meccato Jerusalem then into the heavenson a ladder of gold.It represents the unity andcontinuity of the Abrahamic faiths -Judaism, Christianity and theMuslim faith and contains earlyexamples of Islamic Art. Thedazzling light of the Palestiniandays and nights create anamazing, supernatural aura givingrise to the believe that this place islike paradise itself, echoing thewords of the Qur'an, "than men offaith will know paradise as theireternal home". Known in Arabic asQubbat as-Sakhrah, it is not amosque of public worship but oneof pilgrimage. Islam believes that ifa Muslim is able to reach themosque to pray, it is the equivalentin piety of praying 500 timeselsewhere.

Knesset. The legislative branch of the Israeli government, the enacts laws, elects the prime minister (although he is ceremonially appointed by the President), supervises the work of the government, reserves the power to remove the President of the State and the State Comptroller from office and to dissolve itself and call new elections. The Knesset first convened on February 14, 1949. Every 4 years (or less if early elections are held, as is often the case), 120 members of the Knesset (MK) are elected by Israeli citizens who must be at least 18 years old to vote. The Government of Israel must be approved by a majority vote of the Knesset. The MenorahIt was in the era of the Hasmoneans (the second to first centuries B.C.E.) that the Menorah (the seven branch candelabrum) first served as a national symbol, and upon the foundation of the State of Israel, it was chosen as its emblem, to symbolize the continuity and eternity of the Jewish People. The Menorah, which stands in the area in front of the Knesset gates, was designed by the Jewish English sculptor Benno Elkan, and was donated to the Knesset by the members of the British Parliament on 15 April, 1956. The subjects depicted on its reliefs are drawn from the Jewish tradition.

THE DEAD SEA REGIONDespite it's forbidding name in English, (In Hebrew "Yam Hamelach" means "The

Sea of Salt"), this region is amazingly alive and well! Still fascinating as the biblicalsite of the Lord's wrath, where He rained fire and brimstone on Sodom andGomorrah, and where Lot's wife turned into a pillar of salt (Genesis, 19:24-26), theDead Sea is also probably the most phenomenal body of water on earth, and itssurroundings the most wondrous.

At 400 meters (1300 ft.) below sea level, it is the lowest spot on earth. Part of the6000km Great African Rift Valley. 55km long by 17.5km. At its widest point, with adepth of up to 400m., this inland sea is flanked by the Judean Hills to the west and bythe Mountains of Moab in Jordan to the east. Although fed by rivers in Israel andJordan, as well as springs and winter floods, no water flows out of the Dead Sea.Instead it evaporates in the high temperatures, twice the amount of water entering, leaving one of the world's greatest concentrations of minerals, which supplies vastamounts of raw chemicals for industry, agriculture and medicine; these are extracted, processed and exported all over the world by the Dead Sea Works at Sedom.

Healthy WaterThe unique concentration of the Dead Sea waters has long been known to have medicinalvalue. Aristotle, Queen of Sheba, King Solomon and Cleopatra were all familiar with this and moderndoctors as well often prescribe patients with skin ailments to soak in the waters of the DeadSea. Because of the dropping level of the Dead Sea, the southern end is no longer under water, except for that which is channeled by aqueducts for the purpose of extracting minerals

MOUNT NEBO (NABAU)

Mount Nebo (Hebrew: נבוהר , Har Nəvō) is an elevated ridge that is approximately817 meters (2680 feet) above sea level, in what is now western Jordan. The view fromthe summit provides a panorama of the Holy Land and, to the north, a more limited oneof the valley of the River Jordan. The West Bank city of Jericho is usually visible from thesummit, as is Jerusalem on a very clear day. According to the final chapter ofDeuteronomy, Mount Nebo is where the Hebrew prophet Moses was given a view of thepromised land that God was giving to the Jews. "And Moses went up from the plains ofMoab to Mount Nebo, the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho." (Deuteronomy 34:1).

Madaba is a small town in central Jordan located south of the capital Amman on the King's Highway, some 10 km from Hesban. A town with a long history, Madaba is best known as the location of the "Madaba Map", a 6th century mosaic depiction of Jerusalem and parts of the Holy Land.

St. George's ChurchThe modern Arab village of Medeba(Madaba) is built on the ruins of biblicalMedeba. During construction of theChurch of St. George, the beautiful"Madaba Map" was found. This map wasoriginally part of the floor of a Byzantinechurch, built during the reign of emperorJustinian, AD 527-565. It is the oldest mapof the Holy Land that is still extant. Fiveother Byzantine churches have beendiscovered in Madaba, all with nicemosaics. This has led to Madaba ’ sdesignation as "the city of mosaics."

The map is in the center of the modern church, with the crowdsgathered around it in the picture at right. The current remainsare 34.5 ft x 16.5 ft (10.5 m x 5 m, but patchy and not entirelysquare), only about one-third the original size. There arecurrently 750,000 cubes remaining. The original size of the mapwas approximately 51 ft x 19.5 ft (15.5 m x 6 m), although noborders are visible. The map is made of various colors. It has150 Greek inscriptions in various sizes, and covers the area fromTyre in the north to the Egyptian Delta in the south.

My visit is both a personal pilgrimage and thespiritual journey of the Bishop of Rome to theorigins of our faith in “the God of Abraham, ofIsaac and of Jacob” (Ex 3:15). It is part of a largerpilgrimage of prayer and thanksgiving which ledme first to Sinai, the Mountain of the Covenant, the place of the decisive revelation which shapedthe subsequent history of salvation. Now I shallhave the privilege of visiting some of the placesmore closely connected with the Life, Death andResurrection of Jesus Christ. Along every step ofthe way I am moved by a vivid sense of God whohas gone before us and leads us on, who wantsus to honor him in spirit and in truth, toacknowledge the differences between us, but alsoto recognize in every human being the image andlikeness of the One Creator of heaven and earthJUBILEE
