In their attempts to understand

the world the Greek philosophers

defined four elements from

which the whole of creation was

formed: fire, earth, water, and air.

Each element had its own

characteristics, its own way of

being; in combination they

produced everything we see

around us.

We may not now believe fire,

earth, water and air to be the

elemental principles of the

cosmos, but we still draw on

them in our thoughts, words

and designs as expressions of

the natural world.

Now we can add a fifth element,

to interact with the others and enable

designers to create striking features of

grace, beauty and natural richness.

This fifth element is stone.

Landscaping by Burlington

Burlington stone was formed

from the fiery outpourings of

volcanoes and crushed into its

crystalline alignments by the

intense heat and pressure

kilometres beneath the surface

of the earth.

Fire has taken the different raw

materials and produced five

stones, each with a different

tone: Elterwater, Bursting Stone,

Broughton Moor, Brandy Crag

and Kirkby.

Fire has given Burlington stone

its irreproducible natural veining.

Earth, the foundation upon

which everything else is built,

can be layered, cut and

supported with Burlington

stone. The results can be

informal, tactile landscapes

which express the durability

of the earth, or ordered

spaces of great richness

and beauty.

A trickle of water stroking the

face of the stone. Still water

calmly encompassed in a

stone bowl. A fountain jet

shattering on a sea of paving .

droplets dancing, reflecting

from the polished surface .

Water brings life, brings

movement and coupled with

Burlington stone generates

restful, invigorating, perpetually

changing features.

Burlington stone and air

juxtapose mass against lightness,

permanence against fluidity,

transparency against colour in an

enriching dichotomy capable of

great expression and power.
