Notes From the Divan

The Pote I write this having just returned from the Imperial Session in Charlotte, NC. What a fun and fascinating time it was, watching (as I like to say) the sausage being made. It may not have always been pretty, but the sessions brought together everyone with the common purpose of growing and improving our beloved Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children. Shriners Hospitals at Citi Field turned out to be bigger and better than anyone had expected. Although the Mets lost the Children of our hospitals won. We had 280 supporters in attendance and raised over $1,700 for the Boston and Philadelphia Hospitals. The supporters included local Nobles and their families, Nobles from Cyprus Shrine in Albany NY, friends, Masonic Brothers and the Leo Burnett advertising agency (they now represent Shriners International). People who couldn’t come bought tickets to donate and donated money directly. If you missed our summer BBQ at Amityville Beach then you missed one of the more perfect days and events we’ve had. The weather was absolutely flawless and the food was delicious. In addition to the grill-fare, three of our Nobles competed with their homemade chili with the entire crowd acting as judges. After many satisfied spoonfuls our Assistant Rabban Greg Feldman emerged victorious. We all really won since we got to finish all three versions of the chili—and there was not a drop left at the end of the day. We also got a surprise from the folks enjoying the beach as they dug up dozens of clams which quickly found themselves on our grills. In addition to the food and family, Kismet clowns Silly Pennybags and Magee entertained the kids with balloons, face-painting and games. I attended a Memorial and Musical service for our past Bandleader John E. “Ned” Mahoney on Sunday the 29th of July. This was a wonderful ceremony and opportunity for me to learn more about this man who’s had such an influence on so many Kismet Nobles and others in the music industry. Ned was the Bandleader of Kismet Temple’s Shrine Band from 1968 to 1988. He will be missed. I hope you are planning on joining Kismet in Virginia Beach for the annual Fall MASA. This is our opportunity to support Ill. Sir Lou Barazotti and give him his send-off as outgoing President of MASA. He’s worked hard for MASA and Kismet over the past year. Besides that, Virginia Beach is a tremendously fun week spent with friends and family at a beautiful beachside resort. Kismet will be the leading Shrine to march in the parade and it looks like we’ll have a nice turnout. The year is not over yet—our Ceremonial and OktoberFEZt is October 6th and all Nobles that were obligated this year (or missed last year’s) are required to attend the Ceremonial. Of course, I hope that the entire Nobility will come out in support of our newest members and that everyone will stay for the OktoberFEZt. Remember to come out to Kismet every Monday and to always have time for kids! - Russell L. Magidson, Potentate 2012

As we touched down in Charlotte, I did not know what to expect at my first imperial. Our Imperial session was without a doubt worth the trip. The four days of news and updates was very informative. Imperial Sir Doug Maxwell brought us up to speed on the changes that were taking place within the Hospital System. We are restructuring our budgets from Cost Base budgets to Zero based budgets. This will allow the Hospitals to get a grip on spending and cut costs. Shriner's Hospital is looking at each Hospital as a, "Hospital within a Hospital." We are looking at opportunities to lease out space within our hospitals that are no longer being used. This space would be rented to other health care providers for either research, storage, etc.. As technology has advanced, the average stay at our facilities has dropped. Many procedures are performed as outpatient procedures. Another tool in helping to offset costs is the advent of third party payments. Accepting these payments has helped to generate $100 million dollars. This money is essential in helping to trim the fat and run more efficiently as a network. Over twenty Temples have won membership awards. At this session we recently awarded a charter to Aguila Shriner's of the Philippines. We are still a fun organization and the rest of the world realizes this and wants to be a part of this. Let's continue our membership efforts and keep moving forward. - Mike Iannone Chief Rabban

Notes From the Divan

Now that September is upon us, we say goodbye to the Summer of 2012 and what a Summer it was. Kismet had many wonderful events and activities including our outings with the Long Island Ducks and the NY Mets and our Barbeque. Of course with the summer “sunshine” comes a little “rain” once in a while. Although our very own Illustrious Joe Savaglio was not elected as Imperial Outer Guard at the Imperial session this year, he deserves a great pat-on-the-back from all of us for all his effort and I know that he will have always have the support of the nobility in all his future endeavors. Someone else who deserves a round of applause is our own Illustrious Lou Barazotti and congratulations on his time as President of MASA for 2011-2012. I am sure everyone will have a great time down in Virginia Beach. Our Illustrious Potentate has rescheduled our stated meeting for September – Monday the 10th. Mark your calendars! Coming up on Saturday October 6th, is our Fall Ceremonial and what will always be a personal favorite of mine – OktoberFEZt. There’s nothing better than fun and fellowship mixed in with some food! So loosen your lederhosen because it’s time to grab your beer stein and break out the bratwursts! Finally, elections are just around the corner. Kismet always needs YOU to “step up to the plate” and take upon your shoulders that extra ounce of responsibility. Whether it’s a position in a club / unit or on the appointed / elected Divan - every position is important! The more you do, the more you will want to do and you will be glad you did! From atop the fortress wall… -Larry Dittmer [email protected][email protected] (516) 361-5044

Captain of the Guard

Family, Community, and Shrine – as we come to the end of August and prepare for Fall MA-SA, 2012 has turned out to be a very good year for Kismet Shrine. What a great showing we had at CitiField. Thank you to everyone who came out to support our great philanthropy. The hard work of Kismet and the support of Mecca’s Nobles ensured that Boston and Philadelphia Hospitals both received substantial donations and fun was had by all as we raised money to help children. Four Nobles from Cyprus (the Capital Region) came down for the game. Twen-ty-one people from my office came out to the NY Mets game with us. The secret of our suc-cess is that we share our fun with our family, friends and co-workers. The fun social attitude displayed by all our Nobles is Kismets strength and will carry us to more successes in the fu-ture. I cannot stress the importance of sharing and involving other people from our everyday lives in the events we plan. See you at Fall MASA and at our fall ceremonial and October-Fezt. Keep the momentum going Kismet! - Greg Feldman

Greeting Nobles, from your HPP, For those of you who were unable to attend the annual Shriner’s picnic, we had a fun and food plentiful time (we even had a surprise feast of clams fresh from the ocean!) The weather held up, and even though our area was covered, it was especially nice for the children to run out and about, flying kites, playing ball, blowing bubbles, etc. Our award winning clown unit showed the children how to "'clown around". No one can shine with the talents of gags, face painting and balloon artwork like our clowns! Monday nights are still up and running, the culinary unit won't let you go home hungry!! It is a relaxed way to start the week. We miss you when you’re not there. Keep smiling;George “Chuckles" Heyen

We are working on the Night at the Races fund-raiser for November 3rd. The planning is coming along very well and is very much a group effort.

Put the date on your calendars and stay tuned for more details.

Thank you to everyone involved in the planning: Sam, Linda, Maria, Theresa, Robert, Sue, John H., John K., George, Nancy, Mike, Larry and Greg.

I consider an Honor and Privilege to have been appointed by the Potentate to serve as the Outer Guard for Kismet Shrine. I also considerate an honor to belong to one of the greatest Charitable Organizations in the world as a Free Mason and Shriner.

In my brief time as a member of Kismet Shrine, I have made many new friends and spent numerous hours as well as had good times at Club Kismet. I have also enjoyed the many conversations that I have had about Free Masonry with visiting Brethren and fellow Nobles.

One of my hopes is that more Nobles will come out on a regular basis and enjoy the camaraderie that exists at Club Kismet on every Monday night. I myself enjoy watching sporting events at the Club, be it a Stanley Cup Playoff game or a Baseball game, with other Nobles.

I am looking forward to meeting more Nobles over the rest of the year and continuing to serve as the Outer Guard at our monthly meetings.

Everyone had a wonderful time at the Mets Ball Game. We had a great turnout and everyone had loads of fun. Most importantly, we spread the word and awareness about the Shriners Hospitals for Children. If we reached one family in the crowd that has a child we could help that is what we are looking for. Maybe someone saw the videos and picked up the flyer and brought it home and shared it with their family or friends and could help a child, then all the hard work by David and Robert will have been worth it. We raised a few dollars for our hospitals and that is important also. My thanks to all who helped, we could not do it unless we worked as a team. We are planning next years game, come down and play and have some fun, I am sure you will enjoy ....

Clowns Our best wishes to Meatball for a speedy recovery, Roy is a little under the weather and we wish him well. Magee is also not doing as good as he would like. Richie and Maggie are recuperating from illness and ailments and we hope they feel better soon. The clowns are busy and getting busier. We have been meeting at Kismet on the third Mondays to practice stuff and we would hope you can come on down and join us. We raise money for the transportation fund which is needed and important. We give children a reason to smile, and we have a great time. Come on down and join us, or you can make a contribution to the clown unit as a way to support its good works. Make a check to the clown unit and send it to Kismet and we will put the money to good use for the children. Every penny we raise goes for the children only. keep 'em smiling

GRIP : In early Masonic works this is called the " gripe " German Masons called it the "griff" , and the French Masons "l'attouchment" . Well leave it up to the French , today we all call it the GRIP.

Some of still gripe , God knows I do and we should be so greatfull for all that we have . Thank goodness for the Masonic Shriners and all the good things our organization does for the children.

I look forward to seeing all very soon .

Amityville Beach BBQ On July 15th, Kismet held our annual beach BBQ at Amityville Beach. The weather was perfect and the food was delicious. Along with the usual fare of burgers, dogs and corn on the cob there was also home made chili. As expected, a few of the Nobles got out their secret recipes and served up some awesome chili for the crowd. Our Assistant Rabban Greg Feldman walked away with first prize, but the real winners were all of the folks who got to enjoy all of the entered chili. Honorable mention goes out to George Heyen and his Lady Nancy as well as George Wacob for their entries.

As an unexpected surprise, a few of the folks enjoying the beach found themselves digging up some clams which were quickly snuck away past the beach patrol and set upon our grills. Fresh and delicious seafood right out of the ocean… it doesn’t get better than that!

Shriners International welcomed Agila Shriners of Mindanao, The Philippines, as its 195th chartered temple (chapter) during the 2012 Imperial Session in Charlotte, NC. In the last three years, there have been four new temples added. In 2011, Emirat Shriners in Germany received their charter; in 2010, both Mabuhay Shriners in The Philippines and Al Rai’e Saleh Shriners in Puerto Rico received their charters. “The interest our fraternity has received in other countries has been wonderful to see,” said Past Imperial Potentate Nick Thomas, chairman of the international development committee. “Our international brothers are an integral part of our future and we look forward to this trend continuing in the years to come.”

2012-2013 Patient Ambassadors Hunter Woodhall from Syracuse, Utah, and Jérémy Gabriel from Quebec City, Canada, have been selected as the health care system’s patient ambassadors for 2012-2013. The announcement was made on July, 4, 2012, after the premiere of their video: “Two Worlds Apart – One Place of Hope” during the Imperial Session of Shriners International (National Convention) in Charlotte, N.C. Every year, Shriners Hospitals for Children® chooses two patient ambassadors to represent the thousands of children who receive care at the health care system’s 22 facilities annually, regardless of their ability to pay. The Ambassadors will share their stories to inspire others and raise awareness of Shriners Hospitals for Children. Meet Hunter Woodhall and Jérémy Gabriel, the Athlete and the Artist. The Athlete He plays basketball, football and soccer; he wrestles; he runs track, snow skis, swims and roller blades, all with two prosthetic legs. Hunter Woodhall, 13, was born with fibular hemimelia of the left leg. The condition is a shortening or absence of one of the two bones in the calf, which may require amputation or bone-lengthening procedures to correct. In addition, his right ankle was fused. The Woodhalls had a difficult time finding information about Hunter’s conditions. After exploring options that offered no real hope, the Woodhalls contacted Shriners Hospitals for Children.

After consulting with a team of experts at the Tampa, Fla., facility, the Woodhalls proceeded with the amputation of Hunter’s feet. After his surgery – at just 11 months old – Hunter was soon walking and running around. He hasn’t stopped since. Later, the Woodhalls moved to Syracuse, Utah, where Hunter became a patient of Shriners Hospitals for Children – Salt Lake City. Hunter is a straight A student and an accomplished athlete. The team of experts at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Salt Lake City has always provided options to help Hunter be able to do anything he wants to do, including fitting him with some of the first Flex-Foot Cheetah custom feet that the hospital had ever provided, as well as special liners for wrestling, in addition to his prosthetic legs for daily use. The Artist He has sung for both Céline Dion and the Pope; he has recorded two albums and co-authored a book. He was born deaf. Jérémy Gabriel, 15, of Quebec City, Canada, was born prematurely with severe facial malformations and other complications requiring intensive care. Jérémy was finally diagnosed at 6 months with Treacher Collins Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. In addition to head, skull and facial deformities, children with this condition generally have absent or malformed ears, which can cause hearing loss. Jérémy was referred to Shriners Hospitals for Children – Canada at the age of 5 for treatment. There, the family met Lucie Lessard, M.D., a plastic and craniofacial surgeon. Dr. Lessard suggested a BAHA (Bone Anchored Hearing Aid) Implant. Jérémy received his implant in June 2003, at age 6. After the surgery, Jérémy was fascinated with sound, and discovered he could sing. In fact, he has perfect pitch. Jérémy is scheduled for additional surgery later this year to reconstruct his cheekbones, as well as surgery on his jaw, which should improve his breathing, chewing and appearance. Jérémy now attends a high school specializing in performing arts, where he is an excellent student. He is preparing for a career in the music business.

I am happy to report that yesterday afternoon, July 24, Imperial Potentate Al Madsen met with the Grand

Master of Michigan, Dean Barr, in Traverse City, Michigan.

As a result of that meeting the Grand Master has restored full recognition of the Shrine in the great state of

Michigan; all four Shrine temples in that state can now resume normal operations. I am pleased that once

again we are a part of the masonic family in Michigan.

I would ask that the recorders of all Shrine temples ensure that their Potentate and other divan members

be notified of this important information.

Yours in the faith,

Jack H. Jones, PIP

Change in Application for Treatment Dear Nobles:

In April, 2012, the Boards of Directors and Trustees decided to eliminate the Application for Treatment (AFT) from Shriners Hospitals for Children’s (SHC) Regulations. This change was endorsed by the delegates attending the 138th Annual Session in July 2012, when they approved amendments to the Colorado Bylaws 509.2 and 509.3, which eliminated the refer-ence to patient applications. As a result, SHC is transitioning to a new patient intake pro-cess. This change will align Shriners Hospitals for Children with industry standards, provide a streamlined process for referrals, minimize actual or perceived barriers and allow immedi-ate scheduling for an appointment if a patient’s clinical needs meet the Hospital’s scope of service. There is no longer a requirement for Chief of Staff and Board of Governors’ to re-view patient applications or document approval for new patients.

There will be a transitional period until the new processes have been finalized. Changes will include a new intake process. It is recommended that the former Applications Committee of the Board of Governors (“BOG”) provide oversight until all pending applications in queue have been processed and a smooth transition to the new intake process has been complet-ed. In order to keep the local Board of Governors informed regarding patient flow at the Hospitals, the Boards of Directors and Trustees revised the Hospital Regulations Section 106.3(a) “Duties of Chief of Staff. Board Meetings”, to ensure that the Chief of Staff pro-vides the BOG a monthly status report on new patients treated, and potential patients deter-mined not to be appropriate for care, under this new intake procedure.

The new intake process will continue to support the valuable referrals from our Shrine Nobles, without the added step of completing a patient application. During this transition, instead of a patient application form, Nobles should distribute the Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren patient referral business card. These cards will be sent out to Temples by HQ Public Relations. HQ will also provide a print ready template for patient referral cards to be customized with the specific referral telephone number for each SHC facility. The process is more efficient when patients or referring physicians contact a specific Shriners hospital or ambulatory center’s patient referral line. Therefore, once your Temple receives the customized patient referral cards from the Hospitals, we encourage you to use those. Please work with your local Temple staff to eliminate the use of the application form and any reference in your Temple materials or web-site to a patient application process. It is best practice to contact the Shriners facilities directly for care.

If you have any questions or considerations as we work this process change, please contact your local Shriners Hospitals facility.

Fraternally yours,

Alan W. Madsen

Nobles—Please consider purchasing this year’s tie, which is the bow tie that the Divan wears. In fact, the MASA officers all have one too. It’s an attractive gold-based silk woven tie and sports the new Shriners International logo with the name of Kismet Shrine. I have both regular (you have to tie them) and banded (pre-tied) available. In addition, there is a link to great instructional video on tying a bow tie on KismetShriners.org. In addition, this year’s shirt is a short-sleeved tan button-up. The shirt has the Potentate’s logo on the right breast with “Kismet Shrine” and your name embroidered on the right sleeve. The price of either one is $35. You can send in a check payable to Kismet Shrine (please include your shirt size) or order one the next time you are at the Shrine.
