SAFE ARRIVAL SCHOOL MESSENGER To enhance our existing absence-checking procedure, we have a more efficient

student absence reporting system called Safe Arrival. Thank you to all of the

parents and guardians that have been using the Safe Arrival reporting system

to report your child's attendance. This new system will reduce the time it takes

to verify student attendance, make it easy for you to report your child’s absence

and easy for staff to respond to unexplained student absences.

With Safe Arrival, you are asked to report your child’s absence in advance

using any of these 3 convenient methods:

1. Using your mobile device, download and install the SchoolMessenger app from the Apple App Store

or the Google Play Store (or from the links at https://go.schoolmessenger.ca). The first time you use the

app, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.

2. Use the SafeArrival website, at https://go.schoolmessenger.ca. The first time you use the website,

select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.

3. Call the toll-free number 1-866-606-5567 to report an absence using the automated phone system.

These options are available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week. Future absences can be reported at any

time.

This information is always available on our school website, under ‘Report Absence’

SCHOOL CASH ONLINE We will be using School Cash Online for ALL payments

next year. Once you have registered, you will receive

email notifications for items that are available for you to

purchase (ie. Trips, pizza etc) and reminders when the

item is about to expire. If you are new to Ferndale

coming from another DSBN school, your previous login

information is still valid. If you are new to school, have

not previously signed up or are coming from another

board you will be required to register.

Go directly to the website http://ferndale.dsbn.org

(or hold ctrl and click on the link)

effective internet browser for Cash Online). 2. Create a profile for yourself (Parent/ Guardian). 3. Attach

your student(s) to your profile (date of birth & legal name required). If you need any assistance or internet

SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAMS The end of our 2018 / 2019 school year is quickly coming to an end and we would like to take this opportunity to inform you of various programs offered by the DSBN during the summer. Programs such as Super in 7 and GR8 in 8, are programs that are a great opportunity for students going into grades 7 or 8, to help improve their math and language skills. Reach Ahead gives Grade 7 & Grade 8 students the opportunity to earn credits early at a High School in their community. Courses are available in Physical and Health Education, Fitness, Integrated Arts, Robotics and Civics/Careers. High School Head Start helps students going into grade 9 get ready for their first year of secondary school. Students will gain organizational and time management skills, develop language and math skills and increase their confidence in preparation for Grade 9.

For further information or to register for any of the offered programs, please visit, https://dsbn.org/programs-services/lifetime-learning/EarnCredits/SummerPrograms

Every Day 10 Primary and Junior student members of The Colouring Club meet at first break. Listening to classical music and eating their snack while quietly colouring with their peers improves a sense of calm and peacefulness within students. This non-competitive, relaxing club is a wonderful and accepting environment where students can feel comfortable.

BIKE RODEO When I did the bike rodeo I was so scared. When they were showing us I was not scared because we were getting more help and then when they put the pedals on I had a hard time. But they said keep steady and then I did it! I was so happy! I did not be-lieve it ! It was amazing! I told my mom I was so happy that I now know how to ride a bike! Stefan A I thought that it was fun and I think most people thought it was fun because everyone said lots of good things about it.Everyone liked it because we got to learn a bunch of new things about bikes and even somethings that we already knew to refresh our memories.I thought coming to the Bike Rodeo all we where going to do is sit there and just listen to someone talk about bike safety. However when it started I was listening to everything he said and I did what I was told and I did it my best!!! T Hearn

On May 15th of 2019 our school had its first Bike Rodeo for the grade 5’s and 6’s. During the Bike Ro-deo we had 4 instructors and one of them was a police officer, and he was there to do safety checks with our bikes and helmets, and the other instructors were there to help from Heart Niagara. Heart Niagara brought extra bikes and helmets for those who don’t own one, so they could still participate. At the start we got split into 3 groups each with one instructor. The 4th instructor was helping the students who did not yet know how to ride.

In the groups we learned how to use signals and ride safely on the road.

We also learned how to ride straight, one handed, dodge anything that will make us fall on the road, turning close turns and how to safely stop while slamming on the breaks and not flipping over the han-dlebars. At the end, we all got back together, and we had a slow race and whoever could stay the straightest and be last to the finish line last won. We also followed the police officer in a straight line and it got really hectic. After, we got free time on the tarmac with our bikes.

We had so much fun and we would like to thank Heart Niagara for this opportunity!

BREAKFAST CLUB We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the corporations and volunteers that help make our nutrition program possible, without them we would not be able to assist the children and families in our community. In particular Niagara Nutrition Partners for all their generous donations and Ms C Wing for running our nutrition programs.

For the 2019—2020 school year the breakfast program will run from 8:30 AM to 8:50 AM. Please note students should not arrive at school before 8:35 AM as there is no

staff supervision for students before that; unless they will be attending the breakfast program which is supervised by volunteers and starts at 8:30 AM.

ME to WE

USED BOOK SALE Ferndale's used book sale was a big success. ME TO WE club members worked hard to set up over 1600 books, sell them and clean up the library again! We

raised $753 which will be matched by the Me to We organization to help a needy school in Africa. Thank

you to all who donated books and bought books. Enjoy reading this summer knowing that you helped

send less fortunate children to school.

BREAKFAST PROGRAM Zehrs at the Pen Center has chosen Ferndale to be one of their recipients to help one day at our breakfast program! This will take place on Thursday, June 6th.

Zehrs' employees will be coming to the school to serve breakfast. They are brining enough food and drinks to feed many of our students. Breakfast will be; bagels, cream cheese, breakfast bars, milk, juice, yogurt, apples, bananas and boxes of cereal.

This will be a nice treat for the kids.

Thank you Zehrs for your generosity and help!!
