Three Points/Robles Junction Community Newsletter January, 2016 The Fence Post Top 10 New Year's Resolutions By Albrecht Powell Pittsburgh Expert New Year's Eve has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It's a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make and resolve to follow through on those changes. Did your New Year resolutions make our top ten list? 1. Spend More Time with Family & Friends Recent polls conducted by General Nutrition Centers, Quicken, and others shows that more than 50% of Americans vow to appreciate loved ones and spend more time with family and friends this year. Make plans to meet up with friends for an evening of comaraderie at a favorite place. Work shouldn't always come first! 2. Fit in Fitness The evidence is in for fitness. Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefits than anything else known to man. Studies show that it reduces the risk of some cancers, increases longevity, helps achieve and maintain weight loss, enhances mood, lowers blood pressure, and even improves arthritis. In short, exercise keeps you healthy and makes you look and feel better. 3. Tame the Bulge Over 66 percent of adult Americans are considered overweight or obese by recent studies, so it is not surprising to find that weight loss is one of the most popular New Year's resolutions. Setting reasonable goals and staying focused are the two most important factors in sticking with a weight loss program, and the key to success for those millions of Americans who made a New Year's commitment to shed extra pounds. 4. Quit Smoking If you have resolved to make this the year that you stamp out your smoking habit, over-the-counter availability of nicotine replacement therapy now provides easier access to proven quit-smoking aids. Even if you've tried to quit before and failed, don't let it get you down. On average, smokers try about four times before they quit for good. Start enjoying the rest of your smoke-free life! Even Allegheny County is trying to go smoke-free, and it's taken them a few tries as well. Locally, there are a variety of free support services, hotlines and smoking cessation classes to help you kick the smoking habit. 5. Enjoy Life More Given the hectic, stressful lifestyles of millions of Americans, it is no wonder that "enjoying life more" has become a popular resolution in recent years. It's an important step to a happier and healthier you! Just get out and try something new! Take up a new hobby. Go to a theater performance, or head to the local spa. 6. Quit Drinking While many people use the New Year as an incentive to finally stop drinking, most are not equipped to make such a drastic lifestyle change all at once. Many heavy drinkers fail to quit cold turkey but do much better when they taper gradually, or even learn to moderate their drinking. If you have decided that you want to stop drinking, there is a world of help and support available. Alcoholics Anonymous offers local meetings. There are also a number of treatment-based programs, as well as support groups for families of alcoholics. 7. Get Out of Debt Was money a big source of stress in your life last year? Join the millions of Americans who have resolved to spend this year getting a handle on their finances. It's a promise that will repay itself many times over in the year ahead. 8. Learn Something New Have you vowed to make this year the year to learn something new? Perhaps you are considering a career change, want to learn a new language, or just how to fix your computer? Whether you take a course or read a book, you'll find education to be one of the easiest, most motivating New Year's resolutions to keep. Most local colleges and universities offer distance and adult education programs. 9. Help Others A popular, non-selfish New Year's resolution, volunteerism can take many forms. Whether you choose to spend time helping out at your local library , mentoring a child, or building a house, there are many nonprofit volunteer organizations that could really use your help. The Pittsburgh Cares organization makes it easy by connecting volunteers with projects to fit practically any schedule. Or if your time is really in short supply, maybe you can at least find it in you to donate the furniture, clothing and other household items that you no longer need, rather than leaving them out by the curb to fill up our landfills. 10. Get Organized On just about every New Year resolution top ten list, organization can be a very reasonable goal. Whether you want your home organized enough that you can invite someone over on a whim, or your office organized enough that you can find the stapler when you need it, these tips and resources should get you started on the way to a more organized life. Happy New Year

By Albrecht PowellPittsburgh Expert

New Year's Eve has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It's a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make and resolve to follow through on those changes. Did your New Year resolutions make our top ten list?

1.  Spend More Time with Family & FriendsRecent polls conducted by General Nutrition Centers, Quicken,

and others shows that more than 50% of Americans vow to appreciate loved ones and spend more time with family and friends this year. Make plans to meet up with friends for an evening of comaraderie at a favorite place. Work shouldn't always come first!

2.  Fit in FitnessThe evidence is in for fitness. Regular exercise has been associated

with more health benefits than anything else known to man. Studies show that it reduces the risk of some cancers, increases longevity, helps achieve and maintain weight loss, enhances mood, lowers blood pressure, and even improves arthritis. In short, exercise keeps you healthy and makes you look and feel better.

3.  Tame the BulgeOver 66 percent of adult Americans are considered overweight or

obese by recent studies, so it is not surprising to find that weight loss is one of the most popular New Year's resolutions. Setting reasonable goals and staying focused are the two most important factors in sticking with a weight loss program, and the key to success for those millions of Americans who made a New Year's commitment to shed extra pounds.

4.  Quit SmokingIf you have resolved to make this the year that you stamp out your

smoking habit, over-the-counter availability of nicotine replacement therapy now provides easier access to proven quit-smoking aids.

5.  Enjoy Life MoreGiven the hectic, stressful lifestyles of millions of Americans, it is

no wonder that "enjoying life more" has become a popular resolution in recent years. It's an important step to a happier and healthier you! Just get out and try something new! Take up a new hobby. Go to a theater performance, or head to the local spa.

6.  Quit DrinkingWhile many people use the New Year as an incentive to finally stop drinking, most are not equipped to make such a drastic lifestyle change all at once. Many heavy drinkers fail to quit cold turkey but do much better when they taper gradually, or even learn to moderate their drinking. If you

have decided that you want to stop drinking, there is a world of help and support available. Alcoholics Anonymous offers local meetings. There are also a number of treatment-based programs, as well as support groups for families of alcoholics.

7.  Get Out of DebtWas money a big source of stress in your life last year? Join the

millions of Americans who have resolved to spend this year getting a handle on their finances. It's a promise that will repay itself many times over in the year ahead.

8.  Learn Something NewHave you vowed to make this year the year to learn something

Whether you take a course or read a book, you'll find education to be one of the easiest, most motivating New Year's resolutions to keep. Most local colleges and universities offer distance and adult education programs.

Weight Loss Support Groupby Trish Hastings-Sargent

About 6 months ago a small group decided to meet every Saturday morning at 9 AM at the Hairy Cactus Beauty Salon next to Fred’s Arena 9 to 10 am to support each other on our weight loss journey.

We are a simple group. We weigh in, talk about what worked for us and what obstacles did we face that week.

We exchanged recipes, talk about what apps we use to track our food but most important we support each other. Sometimes we lose weight and sometimes we put it back on, but we kept trying.

We would love new members to join our group. Our space is small so the number of folks will be limited.

If you would like to join us this Sat at 9 AM to see if this group would be good for you please give me a call at 520-247-8222 to make sure we have room, we will be happy to see you.

Christmas Around Three Points/Robles JunctionOur Community Has Heart

Check out what was going on in our community in DecemberVFW Christmas Parade

by Trish Hastings Sargent

A Christmas Parade, in Three Points, who knew? I was out shopping and stopped by Kestrels to see Donna. She mentioned the VFW Christmas Parade and how it would be fun if we joined the parade with our two puppies.

So I called Momma V and asked if we could join. She said yes and on the Friday before Christmas, which is the last day of school, John and I brought our puppies all dressed in Christmas costumes to the VFW parking lot.

The parade assembled there. There were several cars and trucks. Of course there was a shinny fire truck which Santa rode on. There was the Mounted Color Guard. The Altar Valley School District had a float with students dressed as elves.

Momma V made sure I had a seat in the back of a truck with a Fence Post sign. John walked with the puppies behind the truck.

The parade route started at the VFW, then went thru the Robles Elementary school parking lot. The Robles students were lined up on the curb and were so excited to watch the parade pass by.

From the Elementary School the parade went to the Middle School where the students had assembled near the back parking lot.

I had so much fun. Next year John and I plan on participating again. We will decorate our own truck and I am already planning what costumes I will make for our dogs. Maybe elves next year.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Thanksgiving Dinner at Robles Elementary!

It was a true community effort with a great pay off in the end: turkey and a perfect spread from Thomas' crew from the school, from scratch pumpkin pie (Bobby Ethridge--You out did yourself), and many volunteers and helpers from all over the community.

Thank you to the fire department for bringing tables, setting up, and cleaning up.  Thank you to the school for the hospitality and the wonderful decorations.

Thank you to Patzi at Serenity Baptist for answering phones and taking reservations for over a month.

And, most of all, thank you to everyone who came and got stuffed sharing a wonderful Thanksgiving meal as a community.  It was a slice of paradise!

GARDENING TIPS :From arizonasustainable.com

Vegetable growing…So many are frustrated with growing veggies here in Southern

Arizona. We live in Tucson and have worked for three years dialing this issue home, so that we could eat out of our garden. We now do, so here is what we have learned from taking classes, talking with the U of A horticultural department and a good Landscaping professional friend.

Now, first thing is if you are living in the rural desert areas, or even some areas of town, for vegetables, you are going to have to amend your soil. When we say amend, we mean adding about 50% fluffy completely processed compost to native soil. Many folks around here think you should amend even more than that. Also, we use organic fertilizers. Careful with adding fertilizer after you have planted, since even the organic ones can "burn" the young plants.

Dig down at least 15 inches and mix 50% of the excavated soils with a good compost mix. More than 50% will not hurt. The local soils are acid and have salts in them. If you have sandy soils, you will need to

add the compost to retain water. If you have clay soils, you will need to add the compost to break up the clay and add "workability". Also, with the hard pan soils, add a quarter of gypsum. This aids in breaking up the hard soil.

In the Spring and Summer, vegetables that will do well here are squash, tomatoes, Armenian cucumbers, eggplant, peppers, melons, bush beans, corn, okra, watermelon, rosemary, sage, thyme, basil, mint, chives, lettuces, radishes, potatoes and garlic to name a few. You may want to shade the garden from the sun's rays after about noon. Too much sunshine will burn up your veggies if you are not careful. We installed a "Greenhouse Sun Filter Fabric" that we bought from an online green house supply company. It is amazing how this stuff works! The veggies are not burning (getting sunburt) and doing fine. Better than attempting to apply SPF 50 to each plant!

In the late Summer and early Fall, throw in some bush beans, tomatoes, corn and peppers.

Late Fall and Winter, we plant lettuces, chards, cabbage, radishes, turnips, onions, carrots, beets, herbs (in the herb garden that is protected from afternoon sun), tomatoes do well when the temperature is below 90, so we plant them in February, cut back the plants in August and get a second harvest in the Fall! Broccoli does well planted in January and feeds the family well into May. We plant garlic in January as well and it matures in May.

Contact us if you would like to have us help you with your veggie garden.January Gardening Tips From

Harlowgardens.com

• Garden Color: For cool weather color, plant cyclamen, dianthus, calendula, alyssum, pansies, violas, snapdragon, stock, and poppies.

• Vegetables: There is still time to plant cool weather vegetables from seed, including lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, cabbage, carrots, and radishes. Start tomatoes from seed indoors.

• Spring Planting: Prepare vegetable and flower beds for spring planting by amending soil now with Black Gold Soil Builder compost and soil sulphur.

• Pruning: After leaves have dropped, prune deciduous trees and shrubs by cutting out (a) diseased or dead branches, (b) branches that detract from the desired shape of the plant, (c) branches that are growing inward, (d) any branches that are in your way. Always know WHY you are pruning!

• Roses: Prune back existing roses by one half to two thirds. Water twice a week. Do not feed until February. Ask about the date of our Rose Care and Pruning Clinic.

• Clean-up: This is a great month for clean-up of gardens and landscapes. Remove leaf and branch debris from around plants to discourage future pests and diseases, rake fallen leaves, and remove weeds.

• Watering: Continue slow, deep, and less frequent watering of established trees and shrubs. Most established trees and shrubs will need irrigation every 3 to 4 weeks.

• Cold Weather: Continue to cover frost sensitive plants with frost cloth on evenings when we have frost warnings. Remain vigilant about covering over the next two months, as the traditional last date for frost is March 15. (and we’ve had snow in mid April)

• Weeds: Begin to control next year’s weeds with applications of Amaze preemergent granules. Consult one of our Garden Wizards for more information.

• Citrus and Stone Fruits: Apply season long Fruit, Citrus & Vegetable Insect Control by Bayer Advanced. Kills insects such as thrip and prevents new infestations.

Happy New Year!! This is an important year for us all. Elections will take place in November. What with all of the turmoil in the world these days, we need to seriously reflect on who our leaders will be.

The most important thing right now is to pay attention to politics (disgusting as it is these days) and stay abreast of world events. Not only globally, but here at home. Keep in mind that whatever a politician promises, you and I will pay for it in our taxes.

May you all have a bright and prosperous new year!

John Williams Receives All-Arizona School Board Award

Dr David Dumon

On behalf of the Altar Valley School District I would like to Congratulate John Williams our own Altar Valley School District Governing Board President for being honored with the All-Arizona School Board Award at the 58th Annual ASBA Conference. This is ASBA’s highest individual board member honor, bestowed on five board members who exemplify best-practices in boardsmanship, understanding their roles, and following through on their responsibilities.

John Williams is a leader in the Three Points community, the chief of the Three Points Fire District, a dedicated member of the governing board who is thoroughly committed to the responsibility to which he has been elected. Chief Williams is an exceptional person, truly deserving of this distinguished recognition. He is widely known as a man of integrity, highly intelligent, and completely dedicated to any purpose or responsibility he takes on.

In addition to being on the Altar Valley School Board for the past seven years, Chief Williams brings more than 40 years of fiscal management experience, as well as his master’s degree in public administration to the board table. The high value he places on education is evidenced by his own three college degrees. His love of children is obvious not only in having raised six children of his own, but he is a father figure to foster children. As the President of our

Governing Board, Chief Williams has served as our Legislative Delegate, and has represented us well by speaking at conferences in the past. In short, despite being the local fire chief, and active in many other community organizations, Chief Williams has dedicated his heart and soul to education and the Altar Valley School District. This is very apparent in his steadfast determination to make sure that Altar Valley students have the highest quality of education, enriching opportunities, and can compete on equal footing with

other Arizona student. All of us at Altar Valley School District thank John Williams for making Altar Valley an All-Star School District.

The Altar Valley School district wishes our families a happy and prosperous New Year!

Immigration Checkpoints Yield Significant Seizures, Wrap up Busy Week

TUCSON, Ariz. -Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents arrested six suspected smugglers, seized four vehicles and 122lbs of marijuana, and rescued seven Mexican nationals from trunks at immigration checkpoints in Southern Arizona last week.

On Nov. 23, Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents were conducting an immigration inspection at the State Route 90 checkpoint outside of Whetstone. Agents referred a suspicious driver to the secondary inspection lane, but the driver ignored the command and fled the checkpoint. After a brief chase, the vehicle crashed through a fence and the driver fled on foot. Agents apprehended and arrested the driver, determined that she was a U.S. citizen, and transported her to the Willcox Border Patrol Station for further processing. The vehicle contained 122 pounds of marijuana, and was seized along with the drugs. The marijuana had an estimated street value of $61,000.

Later that week, Border Patrol agents at the I-19 Checkpoint thwarted two smuggling attempts within a few hours. Agents assigned to the Nogales Station were conducting immigration inspections when they referred a vehicle to the secondary inspection lane. Agents were granted consent to search the trunk of the vehicle and encountered two individuals concealed inside. Later that day, a similar scenario played out which led to the discovery of two additional subjects

concealed in the trunk of a sedan. All four individuals claimed to be nationals of Mexico and were given medical evaluations before being transported to the Nogales Border Patrol Station for further processing. Agents arrested the four U.S citizens associated with the smuggling attempts.

On Nov. 29, Border Patrol agents at the I-19 Checkpoint found three individuals hiding in the trunk of a car after gaining consent from the driver to search it. All three subjects, identified as Mexican nationals, were given medical evaluations and taken into custody. The driver, a U.S. citizen, was arrested and transported to the Nogales Border Patrol Station for further processing.

The Border Patrol carefully selects checkpoint locations to maximize border enforcement while minimizing effects on the traveling public. Checkpoints are primarily manned by Border Patrol agents to determine an individual's immigration status. These inspections often yield secondary criminal violations and help secure the safety of border community residents. Checkpoints have proven to be highly effective tools in halting the flow of illegal traffic into the United States.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials welcome assistance from the community. Citizens can report suspicious activity to the Border Patrol and remain anonymous by calling 1-877-872-7435 toll free. Contacting the Border Patrol to report illicit activity could result in saving someone's life

Young Scientists In Action!

First graders at Robles Elementary School have been learning about different earth materials in Science. They recently conducted investigations from the FOSS Pebbles, Sand, and Silt Science Kit. During the investigations, the students learned the names of different rocks and focused on the properties and uses of different natural resources.

Altar Valley Middle School Eaglebots Soar At First Lego

League Tournament! The Altar Valley Middle School

Eaglebots, coached by 6th grade teacher Julie Venglarcik, participated in the Tucson Red Qualifying First Lego League Tournament on Saturday, December 5th and received several honors!

They were recognized as a “Developing” team on their project on composting with red wigglers and Madagascar hissing cockroaches. The team scored several “Accomplished” marks in their robot design category. In the area of Core Values, the Eaglebots received “Exemplary” marks!

Specifically, they were recognized for their inspiration and teamwork: Veteran team members Aden Rose and Madison Pizzuto worked together with rookie team members Brandis Johnson and Roberto Alvarez to catch the attention of one of the judges, who recognized the team with the Judges Award.

This hands-on approach to Science is not only fun and engaging for students, it allows them to develop and explore an interest in the world around them; observe, describe, and sort different rocks based on their properties; gather data about their observations by drawing and writing in their Science journals; and learn new academic vocabulary.

It’s a little bit messy (lots of pebbles and sand on the desks and floors!), but the first grade teachers are all very excited about teaching Science, and the students are loving it! Check out the students in Mrs. Debra Norris’ classroom!

Finally, they brought back the trophy signifying that they showed grit in the face of multiple setbacks in their access to the technology necessary to learn and complete their mission. Since the competition, the Eaglebots have acquired two brand new computers and we are very excited about what they’ll be able to accomplish now that they have updated technology!

We are very proud of our Eaglebots!
