____________________________________________ A Tribute to Jean and Uwe as They ‘Retire’
Jean and Uwe Petersen have “retired” from preparing and serving the monthly lunches for all of the 12 years that the Golden Eagles have been in existence since the late Ill. Lynn G. Brandt, 33º, established the senior citizens group when he was Commander-in-Chief. As Golden Eagles President, Ill. Marion I. Miller, 33º, said, “Jean and Uwe are the warm-hearted ‘dynamic duo of the Scottish Rite;’ it’ll take a task force to fill the gap. Having said that, he said that a number of members talked about organizing such a group to order and serve the lunches. Accordingly, President Miller asked for volunteers to step forward and let him know that they will help – just see him at the meetings or call him at home, 610-845-7610. All of their friends look forward to the new experience of joining her on the receiving side of the buffet line and at a table in the dining room.
Winter’s winding down, and spring is just around the corner. Hope you all had a safe and warm winter. With spring comes the desire to get out and enjoy life. Come to the Scottish Rite functions you will find advertised in this Valley News, Especially the Commander-in-Chief’s golf tournament. It has been a while since we have had the pleasure of knocking the little white ball around together. So give it a try I can guarantee you a fun and fraternal day. Bring along your neighbors and friends so they can see how we Scottish Rite Masons enjoy being together and sharing experiences. All are welcome. Maybe we can even get new members into our Blue Lodges with the hope that they will be one of the fifty percent of Blue Lodge Masons that join Scottish Rite. I don’t want to be repetitive but we need members to survive and remain the strong fraternity we have been in the past. Let’s try to double the number of new members at the reunion in May. Just ask that one brother you know to be worthy and would make a great addition to our Valley. If each member would be a first line signer for just one brother our problems will disappear. During the year we have many great Valley Functions such as the Family Life, HSRMC’s Valentine Dance, CCC Ladies Night, Ladies Auxiliary Fashion Show, the Easter Egg Hunt, County Club events, the Fish Rodeo and the Family Picnic. If you attend these affairs you more than get your dues payment back in fun, brotherhood and friendship. I saved the Feast of the Pascal Lamb for last due to the fact that I consider this event to be one of the most important that we masons perform. Our degree exemplifications are performed well, and bring light to all who witness the carefully orchestrated work of our Valley. But the Feast gives us a chance to honor the memory of and bid farewell to those brothers who have gone to their final reward. One of the brethren that will be honored at the Feast that will be exemplified by our Rose Croix body, is a person I greatly admired and I am sure we all miss, Ill. Lynn G. Brandt 33°, a brother, a mentor and a friend. Lynn gave all he had to the fraternity as could be evidenced by the activities mentioned above. Brother Lynn started ninety percent of those events when he was CIC, and they are still the events we enjoy and share our brotherhood. Farewell my friend and brother you have left your mark upon us and we shall miss you till we too join you in your heavenly lodge. Hope to see and talk to all of you in the near future, God Bless and stay Safe. P.S. If I missed an event I apologize. Let me know and I will get the event into the next Valley Notice.
The Commander-in-Chief Ill. Victor M. Frederick III., 33°

I can hardly believe it is this time of year already. The cold winds are upon us, each day may bring various temps of weather and longer days to complete our daily tasks. It seems as though everything about becomes more alive and willing to boost the energy level around us. This brings to mind the chance to raise our level of participation with the A.A.S.R. activities during the warmer weather. The Calendar of events for 2011 is full of activities for all to attend and enjoy. It is your chance to meet new friends and to be with old ones too, but you have to get away from the T.V. and the couch to be able to have FUN and be productive in the best Fraternal Organization in the World. You may even find the time to become active in one of the four bodies in The Valley of Reading. To be elected or appointed to any office in a Scottish Rite body is a distinct honor which carries with it responsibility. Those who accept these honors must be prepared and willing to undertake the duties of their offices and to realize some personal sacrifices. This does not mean that holding an office should interfere with the home life or ability to earn a living for the family. It simply means what we have been told with any organization and that is ,"You only get out of it, what you put into it". Just the ability to be able to help others when needed is all the reward you can ever want in your daily life and that is the opportunity you will experience as a Scottish Rite Mason in The Valley of Reading.

This time of the year is for gathering together and sharing the love and happiness of the season. When the Masonic family gets together they seem to make special things happen. This year’s celebration of Family Life was one of those special happenings. The number of people who came to the Valley to see all the festivities and the look of delight on their faces when viewing the Christmas tree lights, train displays, motorcycles, live nativity and the Legos made all the hard work worth it. The fishpond( Beverly Buzzard) was a packed area as well as the tattoos, which were placed on hundreds of tiny little arms by the Hiram Scottish Riders and the Friends of the Hiram Scottish Riders. The families who brought their children or grandchildren to the dinner with Santa Claus had a festive time. They had the children sit on Santa’s lap and received a toy from him, which brought a huge smile from them all. The chicken nuggets and hot dogs were not bad either. All this could not have been done without the help from several fraternal groups and individuals. The groups to give thanks to would be the Train club ( they also donated monies for advertising for the event), SRVC, make-up department ( Herb Swisher, Larry Buzzard, and Bill Loos), costume department (Craig Shafer, Brad Auker, Floyd Feger), Hiram Scottish Riders, Lodge of Perfection, Sovereign Princes, Rose Croix, Consistory, Demolay and the Rainbow girls. Santas performed flawlessly in their duties to please the children with hope of Christmas morning. Santa was played by Russ Baker and Barry Noll. Mrs. Claus was played by Mickey Frederick. It is almost impossible to remember everyone’s name that have had a part in the Family Life planning and running of all the festivities but I’m going to stick my neck out and try. If I missed your name, I truly apologize and will correct it in my next article for the Valley. I feel that the recognition should be personal and appreciated. A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

Knights, I would like to begin by reminding everyone to please join us; Sunday, April 10th, at 2PM, as the Chapter of Rose Croix, Officers and members of the Scottish Rite Valley of Reading celebrate The Feast of the Paschal Lamb. The Feast is our opportunity as Freemasons, family & friends to honor “those of our number who in the year that has fled, have completed the cycle of this earthly existence”. Please come and share in our celebration of life and service! The next thing I would like to talk you about is change. I was watching the news recently and there was a commentary being made on how the United States is changing, how we are steadily losing our status as The Global Power. It was said that we as Americans have changed, that we have become complacent, that we have lost the desire to be or do our best, that the ideals that once made America the greatest society in the world have been lost. Lost…or Forgotten? I remember thinking to myself, I hope merely forgotten. And what were the ideals he was referring to?…..Honor, Respect, Loyalty, Commitment, Pride, Humility, Hope, Charity, Love of Family, Love of God and Love of Country. The very ideals taught and upheld by Freemasons since the beginning of time, the same ideals our Founding Fathers, many of whom were Freemasons, lived by and carried forward as they built this great nation. So, what is to become of us? I would argue that now more than ever, we as Freemason must find a way to weave Freemasonry back into the moral and social fabric of this country. We must live and continue to serve as examples of the ideals that by today’s standards are thought of as corny or outdated. The year was ‘1776 and Freemasons answered the call to do what was necessary to help build and guide what was to become a great nation. The year is ‘2011, will you answer the call?

Wardrobe Department
I have been milling about the wardrobe department familiarizing myself with the numerous costumes and came across an inventory of tuxedos, which are in good shape and are available for those of small to medium stature. These would be great for upcoming Officers of any Masonic body or for a young man who will be going to the senior prom, graduating from high school or just would like to be the best dressed on his block. We will be gathering a complete list as to what is available for sale at very reasonable prices. The proceeds will be used to assist in repairing and replenishing our aging inventory of costumes. Any questions feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]. I’ll be looking forward to hearing from you. Fraternally, Craig W. Shaffer Wardrobe Supervisor

Things You Ought To Know Facts, Information, Legends and Trivia
County Club Events By Carl F. Berger
Neither time nor space will allow for all the past activities, friendships and memories endured over the length of your membership in the Valley of Reading. The neat thing that happens at the county club events, somehow it seems to stick in our minds and often we reminise with others. There has to be a reason and only each individual can answer as to why. Most folks can’t tell the difference between a friend or an aquaintance. I for one can assure you that by attending a few of your clubs functions, you will loose most of your aquaintances and leave with more friends. Most events are casual and some are family oriented and open to the public. What a great way to invite and bring your present friends to an event and they too will soon realize what a great fraternity you belong and represent. After all, you earned your membership, why not share your experience?
LADIES AUXILLIARY Our program will be "Canine Partners for Life." This is also dessert night. Bring your favorite dessert if your last time begins with a letter between A and L.
