The speaker was Rev. Dr. Cleopatrick Lacy. “Initially the banquet was created as fundraiser for a $35,000 endowment with the university. Each year, we give three scholar- ships to local students, and depending on what we raise, we give the university funds to help out needy students and develop pro- grams,” Wilson Lacy said, president of the Fayetteville- Cumberland County Shaw University Alumni Association. The alumni association starts getting ready for the banquet months in advance. “We have a committee that works diligently to help with that. We worked from February on up to now,” said Lacy; he is 1970 graduate of Shaw University. The banquet is “laid out” buffet-style. There’s music and a guest speaker. This year’s speaker was Wilson Lacy’s younger brother, Dr. Cleopatrick Lacy, pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Griffin, Ga.; he graduated from Shaw University in 1972. “Schools like Shaw University are needed to provide a strong education and spiritual foundation, a Georgia pastor,” Rev. Lacy. The association sells space in an program booklet and ticket. The monies support the scholarship. Rev. Lacy talked about the significance of “church schools” like Shaw University. Schools that teach religion along with other subjects. Jesus said that if he is lifted up, he will draw people to himself, Lacy said.”Shaw will continue lifting Jesus as we educate future generations.” Shaw University in Raleigh, was founded in 1865. It is the oldest historically black university in the state and one of the old- est in the country. “Shaw has been lifting Jesus since 1865,” Lacy said. Rev. Shaw University Alumni Association presents scholarships
