Our Dougherty Family of Lancaster, PA 1850 – 1960

The first of our Dougherty’s in Lancaster, PA is Roger Dougherty. I have no proof, at this time, that Roger was directly related to us, only the fact that Roger witnessed and signed John M. Dougherty’s petition for citizenship on September 1878, soI am assuming they are related or close friends of the family.

1850 Federal Census, Roger was 38 years old, his wife Catharine was 25 and they had 2 daughters, Catharine 8 and Mary A. 7 months old. They resided in the NW Ward of Lancaster with Bridget, 30 years old Widow of John Dougherty(?).

1869 Lancaster Directory lists Roger as a laborer and living at S. Prince n Hazel. Bernard B. is born in Ireland

1860 Census SW part of the Lancaster has their name listed as Docherty, and shows theaddition of John, age 6 and Frank age 4. There is also listed Helena, 6 months old. Roger and Catharine were born in Ireland, the children were all born in Pennsylvania.

1868 Roger resides at Prince and Hazel streets.

1870 Census, 4th Ward of Lancaster, has the proper spelling of the name. Mary A is now 20 and teaching school. Helena is not listed anymore and I assume she has passed.

1871 John M. 18 years old, arrived in the US. Roger resides at 510 S. Prince St.

1872 Margaret McDermott is born in Ireland.

1874 Roger resides 510 S. Prince St. Bernard B. resides 461 S. Prince St.

1875 City Directory list Rodrick at 510 S. Prince St.

1877 Francis G, Printer bds 510 S. Prince StJ. C. Dougherty a Laborer bds at 510 S. Prince St, Roger is the Head. John (?) a millhandbds at 305 S. Prince St.

1878 John M 's petition witnessed by Roger Dougherty and submitted to Lancaster county Court of Common Pleas.

1879 Robert, Roger and John McDevitt are Gasmakers and reside at 410 S. Prince St.

1880 Census, 4th Ward of Lancaster, has Roger, Catharine and daughters residing at 510South Prince Street, Mary A. is still teaching, John and Frank are not listed. John M.

Dougherty, 26 and his wife, Mary, 25, are residing at 461 South Prince Street. John M. was born in Ireland, Mary was born in Germany. John M. is working in the cotton mill. I can not verify where John, son of Roger is, he may have moved and I have no idea whathis middle initial is.

1881 John M married Mary Ann Schnieder in Lancaster.

1884 John McDevitt resides at 410 S. Prince St.

1886 Bernard B petitioned to become a citizen, witnessed by John M. Dougherty. Frank G. Dougherty resides at 510 S. Prince St, Roger and John McDevitt reside at 410 S, Prince St

1888 Bernard B became a citizen as witnessed by John M. Dougherty. William’s City Directory lists Roger a laborer, Francis (Frank) a printer, Mary A. Miss as a teacher and Kate Miss all residing at 510 S. Prince Street. Bernard B. Dougherty had petitioned for citizenship in Oct 1885 (witnessed by John M.) and is residing with John M. Dougherty are 461 S. Prince Street.

1890 and 1892 Williams Directory lists John M (39) a Blacksmith and Bernard B (34) a laborer residing at 461 S. Prince Street. Roger a Laborer, Frank a printer, and Mary A as a Principal, all residing at 510 S. Prince Street.

1893 1895 John McDevitt and Katherine reside at 410 S. Prince St.

1894 and 1895 Williams Directory list John M. and Bernard B still at 461 S. Prince Street. Catharine R, widow of Roger, Francis, Catharine C and Mary A residing at 41 W.Vine Street.

1895 Bernard B. married Margaret McDermott in Lancaster.

Bernard J. Dougherty

1896 Bernard J, son of Bernard B and Margaret is born in Lancaster. Catherine and John McDevitt reside at 410 S. Prince St.

Things stayed the same until 1897 and 1898 according to the Lancaster City Directory, Bernard B. moved to 17 Hazel Street.

Bernard B. moved back to 461 S. Prince Street sometime in 1899 and it appears that Catharine R, Roger’s Wife, died.

1900 Census and city directory list Bernard B., Maggie Dougherty and their son, Bernard J. residing at 444 Beaver St. John M. and his wife Mary residing at 461 S. Prince Street. Francis and his sisters Catharine and Mary A. are still residing at 41 W. Vine Street.

1903 Catharine C is not listed in the directoriy again. She was 48 at that time so it is unlikely that she married, so I assume she died.

1911 John M. Dougherty moves to 309 S. Prince Street.

1913 City Directories list Bernard B as a foreman and Bernard J as a student residing at444 Beaver Street. John M. Dougherty a blacksmith, residing at 309 S. Prince Street.

1916 City Directories list Bernard B as Foreman, Bernard J. as Working in Linoleum Factory both residing at 444 Beaver Street. Margaret, wife of Bernard B died. John M, Blacksmith residing at 309 S. Prince Street. Francis G. a printer and Mary A, teacher residing at 41 W.Vine Street.

1918 Bernard B. Dougherty marries Annie Kinaley and resides at 444 Beaver Street. Bernard J. Dougherty joins Army sometime during 1917/18 time frame.

1919 John M. Dougherty moves back to 444 Beaver Street. Bernard J. Doughertymarries Pearl Allison.

1920 Census list Pearl and Louise Dougherty residing with Ida and Edna Allison at 309 S. Queen St.

1921 Elizabeth daughter of Bernard and Pearl is born in Lancaster.

1922 Bernard B Dies in Lancaster and is buried in St. Mary's in Lancaster.

1923 City Directories list Pearl and Bernard J, a Molder residing at 441 Beaver Street. Francis G. and Mary A. Teacher, residing at 41 W. Vine Street.

1923 Jean, daughter of Bernard and Pearl is born in Lancaster.

1925 Helen, daughter of Bernard and Pearl is born in Lancaster.

1927 City Directories list Barney (Bernard J.), a laborer, and Pearl, a weaver, residing 715 Beaver Street. Anna Dougherty (Widow Bernard B), John M. and Margaret, a stenographer, (Daughter of Bernard B.) residing 444 Beaver Street. Francis G, a printer, residing at 41 Beaver Street. Mary A. not listed and presumed dead.

1929 City Directories list Barney (Bernard J.), a laborer, and Pearl, a weaver, residing 715 Beaver Street. Bernard J was the in Lanc. Co Prison from 1928 until, 1930. Anna Dougherty (Widow Bernard B), John M. and Margaret, a stenographer, (Daughter of Bernard B.) residing 444 Beaver Street. Francis G, a printer, residing at 41 W. Vine Street.

1930 Census lists Pearl 35 a chamber maid, Louise M. 12, Bernard J.10, Elizabeth A. 8,Jean 7, Helen M 4 ½, Pearls sister Miriam Arndt 28 a waitress, Miriam’s daughter Geraldine Rittenhouse 14, residing at 522 Beaver Street. Annie E (Widow of Bernard B) 59, Margaret M (Daughter of Bernard B) 24, and David E. Kinaley, Annie’s Brother 59 resided at 444 Beaver Street. Frank G residing at 41 W. Vine Street. Bernard J. (33) wasin the Lancaster Co. Prison for forgery.

1935 City Directory lists Anna Dougherty, Howard and Margaret Fergus daughter of Bernard B, residing at 444 Beaver Street. Pearl and Louise Dougherty are residing at 412Poplar Street. Bernard J moves to Buffalo, NY for some reason.

1937 – 1938 Polks City Directory lists Anna Dougherty, Howard and Margaret Fergus daughter of Bernard B, residing at 444 Beaver Street. Pearl widow of Bernard J. and Louise Dougherty, a stenographer, and Bernard J. Jr (18), a laborer, are residing at 412 Poplar Street. Bernard J. died in 10 Feb.,1937 at the Buffalo Columbus Hospital, Buffalo, NY of Pneumonia. He resided at 14 Wells st. Buffalo, NY and was a Butcher.

1939 – 1940 Polks City Directory lists Howard and Margaret Fergus daughter of Bernard B, residing at 444 Beaver Street. Pearl widow of Bernard J., Louise Dougherty, a typist, and Bernard J. Jr (18)., a laborer, are residing at 412 Poplar Street. Anna, Widow of Bernard B. died in 1939.

1940 Census list Pearl, Louise (22) a Office Clerk at the Cork Factory, Bernard J (20) a shipping clerk at Wholesale Hardware, Elizabeth A (18), Jean M(17), and Helen (14) residing at 412 Poplar Street. Howard E. a cable splicer for the Telephone Co,(35) and Margaret a secretary for a Lawyer (34) resided at 444 Beaver Street with Bertha Mundorf(51) housekeeper. Bernard J. and June V. Steinman are married

1941 – 1942 Polks City Directory lists Howard and Margaret Fergus daughter of Bernard B, residing at 444 Beaver Street. Pearl widow of Bernard J., Bernard J. Jr., a clerk at Paul Hoovers, Elizabeth A, a machine operator, and Jean M. a bookkeeper are also residing at 444 Beaver Street. Louise Dougherty married Kenneth Hawthorne in 1942. June Gail, daughter of Bernard and June, is born in Lancaster 1941.

1942 Louise marries Kenneth Hawthorne, Elizabeth Marries Charles K. Young.

1944 – 1945 Polks City Directory list Bernard J, a defense worker, and June V Doughertyresiding at 828 Ocean Avenue. Michael B., son of Bernard and June, is born in Lancaster.

1946 - 1954 Elizabeth and Charles, a baker, reside at 556 Manor Ave.

1948 US City Directories list Bernard J., a truck driver for New Holland Machine Co., and June V. residing at 828 Ocean Avenue. Pearl, Jean, a bookkeeper for Sears, and Helen, credit manager for Kay Jewelers, residing at 539 Christian Street. Jean marries James Stetler in 1948.

1950 Bernard J and June V, reside at 828 Ocean Ave, He was a truck driver for New Holland Machine Co. Helen M. was a clerk , Pearl M. was a packer at Consumer Pack, both resided at 539 South Christian St. The Stetlers resided 559 Palm St.

1951 June and Bernard divorced.

1952 Bernard J is a radio repairman at Demmys, he resided 559 Palm St. Helen is a clerk at Berks Optical and resided with Pearl at 36 S. Duke St. June V was a clerk at Maternity Togs and resided at 804C Manor St.

1952 June Moved to 318 S. Duke St and Helen was a clerk at Engle and Hambright Ins.

1955 June Moves to 404 S. Duke St. and works at Angeles Dress Shop. Bernard And Pearl move to 33 Chester St. Helen Marries Harvey Zimmerman. James and Jean Stetlerreside at 121 Sunrise Ave.

1956 June marries William M. Dull and Bernard marries Lee Tabler

1957 Bernard moves to 716 E. King St. Pearl moves to Sunrise Ave with the Stetlers. Helen and Harvey Zimmerman reside 1184 Elm Ave.

1958 Bernard owns Dougherty's Radio and TV Repair. And moves to New ProvidenceRD1.

1959 – 1960 Elizabeth and Charles reside 580 N. Plum St. Helen and Harvey Zimmerman reside at 308 Atkins Ave.

1960 June Gail works at Lancaster Co. Bank and lives at 840 W. Vine. Pearl moves to 343 So Queen St. (Nursing Home) She Died in August.
