SOLID WOOD.SINCE 1899.

Durham Furniture is committed to creating solid wood furniture, distinguished by exceptional quality, award-winning design and enduring value.

Since 1899, Durham has handcrafted its furniture from sustainably harvested cherry, maple and ash – no veneers, no particle board – just nature’s own uniquely beautiful materials. As a premier bedroom and occasional fine furniture manufacturer in North America, the Durham Furniture brand offers more than 40 finishes for select pieces and collections; Mount Vernon for Durham Furniture features three collections inspired by the home of George Washington for today’s lifestyles; PerfectBalance addresses changing lifestyles and life stages with furniture that is the right style with the right finish in the right size at the right price; and My Room is a PerfectBalance collection for kids’ bedrooms.

GORDDILWORTHNovember 2015 saw the retirement of President and CEO Gord Dilworth, who will continue his strategic influence as a Director, helping to oversee the leadership transition over the next six months.

Chairman of the Board Larry Vollett praised him as a strong leader, noting he built a strong financial position, repaid all of its long-term debt and completely revitalized its product direction. "The board is grateful for Gord’s outstanding contributions and his distinguished service as CEO,” Vollett says. “We’re extremely pleased that he will remain involved in the company."

Luke Simpson, who has been serving as Vice President of Finance and Administration, has been named President and CEO. Also, Josh Alexander has joined the company as Vice President of Sales and Business Development.

“Durham Furniture has been an incredible experience for me,” Dilworth says.“It was an honor to serve this very special company, and I’m

delighted to serve on the Board. Having worked with Luke, he has my total support and respect as a highly capable leader who is passionate about continuing the Durham traditions of quality and service that Durham was founded on in 1899.”

Durham’s design team is not only passionate about solid wood, it’s that very passion that drives the design. Chris and Thad Bergelin of Bergelin Designs – with four generations and 105 years of furniture design and manufacturing – have worked with the who’s who of the industry and consider Durham to be one of the most unique companies in North America.

“It takes us back to the roots of the industry when it was a craft,” Chris Bergelin says. “What made furniture beautiful was the wood’s richness and beauty, and hand craftsmanship. Durham Furniture is one of the very few companies that still produces a 100 percent solid wood product, which is a real treat for us as designers.”

Chris grew up working in his father’s plant, and he says that there is no way to make veneers as beautiful and complex as solid wood. “Veneers have no depth,” he says. “Solid wood allows us to create the design simplicity that consumers want today. They quickly recognize solid wood’s authenticity because it speaks for itself.”

The father-son duo travels the world to gather inspiration from architecture and from vintage pieces crafted without modern tools.

“You can’t beat the creativity of people 200 years ago,” says Chris. “They knew how to bring out the characteristics of solid wood, which is a dynamic substance: It moves; it’s alive. Our creative challenge is preserving the timeless beauty of this organic material, as we fashion it into products that fit customer’s modern lifestyles.”

On the Cover: Designing a new collection begins with thorough research starting with Durham’s Director of Visual Merchandising and Showroom Management, Amber Hayes, an essential member of the design team who brings years of consumer experience and a woman’s perspective to the process.

A DECIDEDLY CONTEMPORARY DURHAM

Strong and sleek. Classy and contemporary. Defined and distinguished. In a Durham first, brushed stainless steel mixes with solid cherry in architectural elegance. Contemporary and minimalistic, Defined Distinction is offered in two finishes: the warm Autumn Wind and more mysterious dark Molten Night.

Durham: Introducing a New Definition of Distinction

If history itself – muted by weather and time – could inspire design, it would look a lot like The Distillery Collection, a new solid maple bedroom and occasional collection from the Mount Vernon Collection by Durham Furniture. Like the small-batch whiskey still produced in the 18th-Century way by the Mount Vernon Distillery, this collection of solid wood furniture crafted in North America speaks to the way Millennials live today, representing authentic artisanship and hands-on attention to detail. Its clean, simple lines reflect its timeworn history in two casual wire-brushed finishes, Trenton Grey and Whiskey. People love the authenticity, the story and the fact that a percentage is donated to support the preservation of Mount Vernon.
