It is also why I have decided to put our Board of Directors Meetings “on the road”, wherein we will conduct four of our monthly meetings in each of the 5 different districts. The charge here is to have the Host District fill the hall/venue with local lions so they can get a firsthand look at who we are and how we work, all in an effort to help you make your fundraising/donation programs more effective. In September, we took our Board Meeting to District Y. Kudos to District Governor Linda Carr, it was a fantastic turnout of local lions. We’re looking forward to continuing the visits to the other 4 districts. I have also asked all the directors to pay particular attention to those clubs within their dis- trict who have historically not been donating to Eye Research. Our goal here is to reverse that trend to get to 100% participation regardless of the amount. Beyond the clubs, I want to bring the great work of Mass Lions Eye Research to corporate America and the public in general. To achieve this, we will re-double of efforts at Public Relations including jazzing up our website to make it more current and user-friendly. One initiative we are trying this year is to publish the Eye Catcher on our website and to forego the extraordinary expense of printing and mailing the Eye Catcher. The plan is to continue to print copies for the institutions we support as well as some for the international family, and to Lions out there who do no have access to computers, and we are working on the most efficient method to ensure that they do not miss their copy of the publication. In that vein, we are open to ideas. Perhaps the clubs could be a conduit to making that work. Furthermore, and to keep all Lions abreast of the goings on in and around the state in a more timely manner, we plan on two or so updates during the year in which we’d like to highlight the fundraising projects being con- ducted by the clubs on behalf of Mass Lions Eye Research. We urge all of you to let us know what you’re doing in your district and clubs. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEWhat a great honor to be the President of the highly successful Massachusetts State Project – Massachusetts Lions Eye Re-search Fund, Inc. Since its inception in 1950, when $5,000.00 was raised to fund a grant at Harvard Medical School, which re-sulted in the diagnosis and remedy of “improved Baby Blindness,” to 2016 when over 1 million dollars was granted to six worldclass eye research institutions in and around Boston; the Lions of our Multiple District 33 have not faltered in their support forthe mission of the Mass Lions Eye Research. We’re pleased to announce that Massachu-setts Lions Eye Research Fund’s newsletter,“The Eye Catcher”, will have three (3) issuespublished during this 2016-2017 Lions year,Fall, Winter, and Spring. This year each issuewill be posted on the MLERF website atmlerfi.org.

For the Fall issue, lets review the District Y re-sults from last year.

The Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Fund’s65th Annual Awards Banquet was held last Au-gust 6th at the Mansfield Holiday Inn in Mans-field, MA to recognize the amazing work of allLions Clubs throughout the state who came to-gether to raise a total of $958,588.00 during the2015-2016 Lions year. Under the leadership ofour 2015-2016 District Governor Mary Brittainour District Y totaled $75,295.53 in Club dona-tions. Twenty eight of our thirty eight Clubswere able to make donations to the Fund led bythe East Longmeadow Lions Club ($5,157.39),Northampton Lions Club ($8,855.65), AgawamLions Club ($10,847.89), and the District lead-ing West Springfield Lions Club ($15,000.00).The Agawam Lioness Club ($800.00) and theHoosac Valley Leo Club ($100.00) made valu-able donations enabling us to reach our finaltotal for the year.

The 2015-2016 total Club donations to the fundfor Lions MD33 (all five Districts) was$958,588.00. At the MLERF Banquet last sum-mer, outgoing President Martin Middleton of theBridgewater Community Lions Club in District Scongratulated and thanked everyone across thestate for their work and effort last year thatraised almost a million dollars, with every dollar

raised going to important start up eye re-search work in a number of research institu-tions in Massachusetts. Your efforts make adifference in the lives of so many.

Lion PDG Edward “Ned” Merrick of thePlainville Lions Club in District K is our 2016-2017 MLERF President. President Ned hasset his financial goal for the year Lions MD33at $1,000,001.00. Along with his financialgoal, President Ned’s has set three othergoals for the year which include 1) Club Co-ordination- Being sure that the appointedMLERF Directors from each District are vis-iting Clubs to speak on behalf of the impor-tant work of the Fund. 2) Bringing EyeResearch to the Clubs- Moving around theMLERF Board of Director’s meetings to allfive Districts so the Directors have an oppor-tunity meet different Lions and Lions Clubsand have them report on what they’re doingin raising funds for the cause. 3) Establish-ment of a “President’s Circle”- For this year, and the succeeding two years, a distinctive“President’s Pin” will be available for sale fora donation of $33.00 to the MLERF “Journeyfor Sight” program. The donation will also in-clude enrollment in the “President’s Circle”.The purpose behind this initiative is not onlyto increase donations to the MLERF “Jour-ney for Sight” program but to promote the in-vestment by individual Lions in theMassachusetts Lions Eye Research Fund.

Let’s have another great year in the supportof the Massachusetts Lions Eye ResearchFund, not only matching last years Districttotal but surpassing it! Thank you for thetime, efforts, and resources you put in tomake a difference in the lives of those inneed.

Happy Fall! That means that nasty four letter

word S-N-O-W and the cold weather that it

brings with it is right around the corner. It is

also a special time of year when we gather to-

gether with family and friends to celebrate the

holidays and to be thankful for all that we have.

Therefore, it’s the perfect time to say THANK

YOU to all the Lions in District 33-A for their

generosity to MLERF during the 2015-16 Lion-

istic year. The total donations from our Awe-

some District totaled $81,047.62. This is

certainly something to be very proud of. Way

to go Lions!

In August, at the Massachusetts Lions Eye Re-

search Fund’s Annual Awards Banquet, sev-

eral of our clubs were honored for their

donations. They were the: Mendon Lions

($9,645.90); Milford Lions ($15,000) and our

#1 Club in the District – Millbury Lions

($16,900). Congratulations to all, and thank

you for all that you do for eye research in Mas-

sachusetts.

This year our new President of MLERF, PDG

Ned Merrick, has initiated a change in where

our Board of Directors meetings will be held in

an effort to be fair to the Directors who always

have to travel long distances to attend. This

year, each of the five Districts

will be responsible to host a

Board of Directors meeting. District 33-A

will be hosting the meeting in November.

Many of you know what MLERF is all about,

but there may be members of your club

who do not, especially the newer members.

This would be a great opportunity for you to

reach out to your District 33-A Directors to

come speak to your club about the MLERF.

The Directors this year are: PDG Mark

Desmarais from the Winchendon Lions,

Lion Jeanne Lillie from the Millbury Lions,

PCST Colleen Oncay from the Mendon

Lions and IPCST Denise Andrews from the

Fitchburg Community Lions. The Directors

are advocates for the mission of eye re-

search and club visitations and presenta-

tions are an important part of this role.

Should they contact you to set up a time to

visit your club, please give them the oppor-

tunity to come and talk about what the Fund

does and why your donations are so vital in

living up to the challenge that Helen Keller

gave us to be her “Knights of the Blind”. If

you don’t hear from them, give them a call,

they would be a great speaker for one of

your meetings.

Finally, I just want to say keep up the great

work that you’re doing in raising funds for

eye research and Thank You! Thank You!

Thank You! You are all AWESOME, and I

am so proud to be a Lion and to be serving

on the MLERF, Inc. Board of Directors rep-

resenting District 33-A.

Fellow Lions,

This year, more than ever, it's time to renew our

commitment to Mass Lions Eye Research Fund,

Inc. While we understand every year our Clubs

go out of their way to support this valuable pro-

gram, while we're celebrating our Centennial and

District 33K's own PDG Ned Merrick is Presi-

dent, it's even more important than ever. Ned's

goals are simple this year and every club should

strive harder than ever to increase their dona-

tions over last year.

We understand that your budgets are strained

and how important making direct donations in

your cmmunity are. However, let us not forget

just how much good every dollar you donate to

MLERF does for residents all across Massachu-

setts and the world.

Without the funds that our clubs provide every

year, advances in eye care would be minimized.

Our funding provides valuable research dollars

to some of the premier eye care institutes in the

country; thanks to the dollars we raise, much of

this research goes on to address serious eye

problems including cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic

retinopathy and retinitis pigmentosa.

Many members of our Lions Clubs are hesitant

to donate more money to MLERF because

they do not understand how their donations

work. Towards this end, we'd encourage every

Lions Club in District 33K to invite a speaker

from the MLERF Board of Directors to your

club....let them tell you how much good your

donations do every single year. If you would

like to schedule a club meeting one of the re-

search facilities, reach out to a member of the

board; I can assure you your club members

will have an exciting and informative night

meeting with researchers and touring these

facilities.

Let's do everything we can to help PDG Ned

reach his goal of raising $1,000,000 for

MLERF. I know we can do it!

Yours in Lionism,

PDG Doreen

Congratulations Lion Martin, you trulymade a difference.

Under the organization and direction of event ChairLion 1st Vice District Governor Deb Grassi of theRochester Lions Club the 2016 Lions District 33S “Inthe Blink of an Eye Walk for Blindness and Diabetes”raised over $12,000.00 for the Massachusetts LionsEye Research Fund on a rainy, cold, and windy Fallday, on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Scusset Beachalongside the scenic Cape Cod Canal. The annualDistrict “Walk” is a fun and fit activity for DistrictLions, Leo’s, and families, and includes the Lions“pledge” walk along the scenic Cape Cod Canal, food, entertainment for all ages, overnight campingat the Scusset Beach campsites, and much more!

The goal for the annual event is to help 2016-201733S District Governor Sharon Audette reach her goalfor District donations to the MLERF. All funds raisedat the “Walk” go directly to research grants awardedto Boston area institutions including the SchephensEye Institute, Children’s Hospital, and the Joslin Di-abetes Center; for work related to the prevention andcure of eye related diseases.

Due to the severe inclement weather conditions onSaturday, the activities were curtailed but the dona-tions came in and the light turnout of Lions who didcome to actually do their “pledge walk”, rain orshine, had a great time doing so. A large group ofLions, clad in rain gear, huddled under makeshifttents in the Scusset Beach main parking lot and en-joyed hot clam chowder and delicious food through-out the morning.

“Walk” Chair Lion 1st VDG Deb Grassi extends hergreatest appreciation to all the Lions, supporters, vol-unteers, participants, and Club’s who made thisyears “Walk” a “Splashing Success”!

Dr. Joseph Rizzo’s team, fromMassachusetts Eye and Ear, hasbeen a leader in this researchthrough the collaboration of Har-vard Medical School and the Mas-sachusetts Institute of Technologyon the Boston Retinal ImplantProject (BRIP). For those with se-vere injury in both eyes, as some-times occurs with blast injuries, both the eyes and the optic

nerves may be damaged. As a result, making theconnection of an image from the prosthetic eye to thebrain is a challenge. The BRIP group has developeda wireless and implantable neural prosthesis for usein the retina. However, this device relies on a func-tional optic nerve. With this award Dr. Rizzo’s teamwill develop and test a prosthesis to electrically stim-ulate the lateral geniculate nucleus — a key relaycenter in the brain’s visual processing pathway —

that will allow signals to skip overthe damaged optic nerve and reachvisual centers in the brain.

A contact lens designed to deliver medication gradually to the eye may improve outcomes for patients who struggle with imprecise, difficult to self-administer eye drops

Boston, Mass. — A contact lens designed to deliver medication gradually to the eye could improve outcomes for patients withconditions requiring treatment with eye drops, which are often imprecise and difficult to self-administer. In a study publishedonline today in Ophthalmology, a team of researchers have shown that a novel contact lens-based system, which uses a strate-gically placed drug polymer film to deliver medication gradually to the eye, is at least as effective, and possibly more so, as dailylatanoprost eye drops in a pre-clinical model for glaucoma.

“We found that a lower-dose contact lens delivered the same amount ofpressure reduction as the latanoprost drops, and a higher-dose lens, in-terestingly enough, had better pressure reduction than the drops in oursmall study,” said first author Joseph B. Ciolino, M.D., an ophthalmologistat Massachusetts Eye and Ear and an Assistant Professor of Ophthal-mology at Harvard Medical School. “Based on our preliminary data, thelenses have not only the potential to improve compliance for patients, butalso the potential of providing better pressure reduction than the drops.”

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world. Whilethere is no cure for glaucoma, ocular medications aim to lower pressurein the eye with the goal of preventing vision loss. Currently, the medica-tions are delivered as eye drops, which sometimes cause stinging andburning, can be difficult to self-administer and are subsequently associ-ated with poor patient compliance, with some studies suggesting thatcompliance is as low as 50 percent.

“This promising delivery system removes the burden of administration from the patient and ensures consistent delivery of med-ication to the eye, eliminating the ongoing concern of patient compliance with dosing,” said Janet B. Serle, M.D., a glaucomaspecialist at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Contact lenses have been studied as a means of ocular drug delivery for nearly 50 years, yet many such lenses are ineffectivebecause they dispense the drug too quickly. The authors of the Ophthalmology study designed the contact lens to allow for amore controlled drug release. The researchers had previously shown in a 2014 study that the lens is capable of delivering med-ication continuously for one month.

The researchers designed a novel contact lens that contains a thin film of drug-encapsulated polymers in the periphery. Thedrug-polymer film slows the drug coming out of the lens. Because the drug film is on the periphery, the center of the lens is clear, allowing for normal visual acuity, breathability and hydration. The lenses can be made with no refractive power or with the abilityto correct the refractive error in nearsighted or farsighted eyes.

“Instead of taking a contact lens and allowing it to absorb a drug and release it quickly, our lens uses a polymer film to house thedrug, and the film has a large ratio of surface area to volume, allowing the drug to release more slowly,” said senior author DanielS. Kohane, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Laboratory for Biomaterials and Drug Delivery at Boston Children’s Hospital.

In a study supported by a grant from the Boston Children’s Hospital Technology and Innovation Development Office, the effectof this drug eluting contact lens was assessed in four glaucomatous monkeys. The researchers showed that the contact lenswith lower doses of latanoprost delivers the same amount of eye pressure reduction as the eye drop version of the medication. The lenses delivering higher doses of latanoprost had better pressure reduction than the drops. Further study is needed to confirmthe finding in the higher-dose lenses.

The researchers are currently designing clinical trials to determine safety and efficacy of the lenses in humans.

“If we can address the problem of compliance, we may help patients adhere to the therapy necessary to maintain vision in dis-eases like glaucoma, saving millions from preventable blindness,” said Dr. Ciolino. “This study also raises the possibility that wemay have an option for glaucoma that’s more effective than what we have today.”

In addition to Drs. Ciolino, Kohane and Serle, co-authors of the Ophthalmology report include Amy E. Ross, M.Sc., Rehka Tulsan,M.Sc., and Amy C. Watts, O.D., of Massachusetts Eye and Ear, David Zurakowski, Ph.D. of Boston Children’s Hospital and Rong-Fang Wang, M.D., of Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

The research was supported by a grant from the Technology and Innovation Development Office of Boston Children’s Hospital, the National Eye Institute 1K08EY019686-01, the Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Fund, the New England CorneaTransplant Fund, the Eleanor and Miles Shore Foundation and Research to Prevent Blindness.
