At Christmas we inadvertently expose our pets to a variety of toxic substances. Not only are we bringing (admittedly only mildly toxic) mistletoe, holly and ivy into the home but we also leave toxic substances lying within easy reach under the Christmas tree! Dogs and cats will quickly sniff out presents containing food, especially chocolate. Wrappings are usually shredded but ribbons and tape may be swallowed causing a bowel obstruction.

Chocolate poisoning occurs in dogs, cats and rabbits and is due to the stimulant, theobromine that is found in chocolate. The severity of the poisoning will depend upon the type and amount of chocolate that has been eaten. 1g dark chocolate per Kg bodyweight is a toxic dose

and veterinary advice should be sought. White chocolate contains no theobromine at all. Cocoa powder & coffee grounds are also toxic.Grapes, raisins, currants and sultanas can all cause renal failure in dogs and cats. At Christmas this commonly occurs when dogs get hold of the Christmas cake or mince pies. Don’t forget chocolate covered raisons are often around as well, two toxins in one! Holly, mistletoe, ivy and poinsettias will all cause vomiting if eaten but do not cause serious illness with the exception of ivy which has been reported to be fatal for rabbits. Lilies, found in so many beautiful bouquets, are very toxic to cats causing acute renal failure.

Peanuts and macadamia nuts can cause vomiting and occasionally

twitching and tremors. Again watch out for the chocolate coated ones.The artificial sweetener xylitol, found in chewing gum and available for home-cooking, is very toxic to dogs. It causes low blood glucose levels and subsequent liver failure.

The onion family, including leeks, garlic and chives can all cause vomiting and anaemia even when cooked so don’t give your pets left over onion gravy or sage and onion stuffing with their turkey treat.

There will of course be lots of small toys just waiting to be swallowed and so many toys come with batteries that these too are often consumed. Toys cause intestinal obstructions whereas batteries can cause internal burns and metal poisoning. It is helpful to know the brand and type of battery in such
