The experts for fire protection in electrical installations
OBO Bettermann has offered products and solutionsfor electrical installations for over 100 years. Our fo-cus has always been particularly directed towardsbuilding protection and safety. This is becauseelectrical installations pass through buildings like anetwork and need special protection.
As experts in electrical installation, we at OBO detec-ted early on how important professional fire protectionmatched to the individual situation is. The area of fireprotection has now belonged to our OBO range formore than 40 years. Since that time, we have not onlysupplied cable routing systems or devices to our cus-tomers, but have also equipped them with the know-ledge and required products to make the whole sys-tem safe in the event of fire.
Today, electricity is the #1 cause of fire - if it is notsufficiently protected. For this reason, planners, archi-tects and installation engineers must consider com-prehensive fire protection at an early stage and en-sure that fire protection building work is carried outcorrectly and that it is ready for approval.
In such a sensitive area as fire protection, it can behelpful or even necessary to obtain support and ex-pert advice! Whether for a first overview, an individualconsultation or the development of special solutions -as fire protection experts, my colleagues and I will actas responsible helpers. And not least because ourOBO fire protection products ensure maximum safetyin the event of fire.
With our products and our comprehensive consulta-tion, we can cover all three fire protection aims. Wecan help to limit the spread of the fire. We can protectemergency and escape routes. And we can alsomaintain the function of the electrical systems if thereis a fire. How you can achieve the three protectionaims in individual cases will be explained on the fol-lowing pages using various application examples.
Of course, the examples described here cannot an-swer every question, because individual solutions arefrequently required for careful fire protection. For thisreason, you can find all the information on our Sup-port service on P. 24/25. Rely on your fire protectionexperts and contact us about any matter to do withfire protection and safety in the field of electrical in-stallations.

The three protection aims
Preventive fire protection saves people's lives and property. Three points are funda-mentally important when it comes to saving people's lives and protecting propertyagainst fire. Forty years of experience with fire protection in the field of electrical install-ations and a unique product range make OBO one of the few providers who cover allthree protection aims of construction fire protection:
1. Limit the spread of fire
In buildings planned with fire protection, fire and smokeare prevented from spreading quickly. Here, insulationsystems and cable bandages are used. These measuresprevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the build-ing.
2. Protect escape and rescue routes
If there is a fire, saving people's lives takes top priority. This is why emergency and escape routes are the centrallifelines of any building. They must be planned and con-structed to be fireproof and remain usable under all cir-cumstances.
3. Maintain electrical functions
If there is a fire, important technical equipment, such asfire alarm systems, extraction systems or emergency light-ing, must continue to function. This allows safe evacuationand the fire brigade is supported in fighting the fire. Fire-proof cable systems and cable support systems are es-sential here.

Fire protection explained using examplesThe OBO Fire Protection House
How can the three protection aims be achieved inconcrete terms? Using our example building, we willshow you over the coming pages where fire protectionmeasures are required and how they can be imple-mented.
Even if fire protection systems are frequently barelynoticed in the finished building - you will see that fireprotection has a role to play in every building areaand how it requires exact planning! Not least becausefire protection measures have been a statutory re-quirement for a long time now.

Protection aim 1:Limit the spread of fire
To prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of thebuilding, the installations required for ceiling and wallpenetrations must be reliably sealed. This is done us-ing insulation systems, which effectively prevent thespread of fire and smoke.
We fire protection experts divide a building up into in-dividual fire sections, which are protected by insula-tion. Thus, if there is a fire, all the building sections notdirectly affected by the fire are protected for a certainperiod of time, as the fire cannot spread directly.
We can protect people and property through structuralmeasures and can help the fire brigade to isolate thefire with extinguishing measures.
Different requirements and installation situations al-ways require suitable solutions. This is why we atOBO are always available to the electrical installationprofessionals as an adviser about structural fire pro-tection.
Here, we show you a few examples of how insulationcan be applied effectively.

To prevent the spread of the fire, fire sections are separatedfrom one another. In our example, a technical room is safelyprotected. High fire loads due to large quantities of cables areencapsulated by the high fire resistance period of the room.Cable penetrations through walls are closed off with cableand combination insulation to stop fires.
Insulation is also required above false ceilings. Dataand power cables and the necessary insulation arethus outside the field of vision and are not noticed. The insulation can usually be reached easily via the in-spection openings in the false ceiling.
A sensitive area which is frequently forgotten: Theunderfloor cables. But the area under the system floormust also be well insulated. In server rooms with sys-tem floors, dust and fibre-free systems are suitable, asgreat emphasis is placed on cleanliness.

Protection aim 1
Insulation in practiceLimiting the spread of fire and smoke
Safe cable insulation is essential for effective fire pro-tection. Only in this way is it possible to prevent thespread of fire and dangerous smoke.
The OBO fire protection experts recommend thePYROPLUG® Peg insulation system, as it can bemounted completely cleanly and without dust orfibres. This means that it can also be used in sensitiveareas such as in data processing rooms or laborator-ies.
In this system, core drill holes in solid walls and con-crete ceilings are closed off with FBA plugs made ofpermanently elastic, closed-pore foam. Eight differentsizes are available. Residual joints are simply closedoff with filler.
Special tools are not required for mounting. Retro-in-stallations of cables are also possible with the minim-um of effort.

Ideally, planners and electricians specify the right in-sulation system together. If they choose PYROPLUG®
Peg, then the suitable plug must be selected.
The installation engineer cuts the plugs according tothe cable assignment. Then they are pressed into thewall opening quickly and cleanly on both sides -without dust or fibres. Installation must always takeplace according to the approval.
Residual joints are closed off with the 1-componentfiller PYROPLUG® Screed. An identification plate is ap-plied to the insulation as documentation.

Protection aim 2:Protect escape and rescueroutes
If there is a fire, heat and smoke development pose arisk to human lives. Escape and rescue routes guidepeople out of the building along safe routes and actas a point of attack for the fire brigade. For this, theroutes must also be safely accessible in the event offire.
For fire experts, saving people's lives is the top prior-ity. This is why we place particular emphasis on safeescape and rescue routes. They must be designed insuch a way that any electrical installation does notrepresent an additional fire load.
We at OBO are happy to help you with our knowledgeand wide-ranging product range to equip your escapeand rescue routes.
Our false ceiling systems ensure a safe installation.
In addition, we offer two different variants of fire pro-tection ducts: The internally coated PYROLINE® Rapidand PYROLINE® Con made of fibre-glass reinforcedlightweight concrete. Both are ideal solutions for theencapsulation of fire loads in escape and rescueroutes.

With installations above suspended fire protectionceilings, particular care is required: If there is afire, the ceiling must not be stressed or damagedby falling or deforming parts. Cable support sys-tems used here must be designed to be safe inthe event of fire and offer a large selection, in or-der to adapt themselves optimally to the cablevolume to be routed and to the available installa-tion space.
Fire protection experts treat the stairwell as an indi-vidual fire section, which requires special protection. Itserves as the most important escape and rescueroute to the outside, as well as an access route for firebrigades. To protect the escape route against cablefires and dangerous smoke development, the fire loadmust be effectively encapsulated.
The OBO fire protection ducts can be run through fireresistance-compatible walls, without the need for addi-tional insulation. The installation can take place dir-ectly on walls and ceilings or, as shown here, using asuspension system. Simple retro-installation is alsopossible: The ducts can be quickly inspected and canbe reassigned at any time.

Fire protection ducts in practiceFor safe escape and rescue routes
To ensure that no dangerous smoke is created in thearea of escape and rescue routes, it is essential thatcable fires are prevented. Fire protection ducts are asafe solution here, as they actively encapsulate thefire load, thus preventing the spread of a fire.
As part of the OBO fire protection products, you willfind, amongst other things, the PYROLINE® Rapid ductsystem, which, together with many different fittingsand a comprehensive range of accessories, can offera high level of flexibility.
The internally coated fire protection ducts can bemounted both directly on the wall or ceiling, on theraw floor or in the system floor, and also with the sus-pension system.

The installation engineer can choose between threedifferent dimensions for various cable volumes. Theducts are delivered in lengths of 2 metres and arethus also suitable for simple, rapid section mounting.
With the PYROLINE® Rapid duct system, the electri-cian can simply snap on the lid after installing thecables - without the use of screws or tools. Connect-ors provide smoke closure: The closing contourbetween the lid and base provides effective sealing.
For the fire protection ducts, many different fittings areavailable for horizontal or vertical changes of direc-tion. Here, the installation engineer is mounting a flatangle after having installed the cables beforehand.

Protection aim 3:Maintainelectrical functions
A fire occurs and there's no power? This worst-casescenario must be avoided at all costs! The function ofsafety-relevant electrical systems is essential in theevent of a fire. Important powered equipment such asemergency lighting, fire alarm systems or smoke ex-traction systems must continue to function for a suffi-ciently long time.
As fire protection experts, we pay particular attentionto maintaining the supply of electricity to all the safety-relevant electrical systems. This is because in theevent of a fire, powered technical equipment isused whose failure would mean a major safety risk topeople.
In public buildings and structures such as hospitals, hotels, stadia or theatres, maintaining the supply ofelectricity is even required by law.
For safe evacuation, the provision of safety lighting, fire alarm and smoke extraction systems must beguaranteed for a defined period of time. The same ap-plies to fire alarm systems and the operation of liftswith fire controls.
To support effective firefighting, maintaining the supplyof electricity should also be guaranteed after a firebreaks out. Thus, for example, the supply of extin-guishing water and the functioning of fire brigade liftsshould be secured.
We at OBO gladly offer our advice and informationabout our products, to help you achieve these import-ant aims.

If a fire breaks out in an underground car park, it canquickly lead to the development of an enormous levelof smoke. For safe evacuation, the operation ofsmoke extraction systems must therefore be guaran-teed. Through the extraction of the developing heat, the entire building structure is simultaneously protec-ted. And, of course, with good smoke extraction, firebrigades can better localise the centre of the fire.
Systems for maintaining the supply of electricity areavailable in different installation variants. All the sys-tems can be installed both horizontally and vertically. The selection is made depending on the installationroute and volume of cables. A fire alarm controlcentre can be integrated in the safety system of thebuilding.
The emergency power supply is the core of the safety-relevant electrical system. This requires special pro-tection in order to ensure the continued supply ofelectricity in the event of fire.

Fireproof cable support systems in prac-ticeFor maintaining supply of electrical sys-tems
To ensure that electrical systems continue to functionin the event of a fire, cable systems must withstandspecial fire tests. The OBO routing systems fulfil thesespecial requirements.
Often, to maintain the electrical supply must also beensured in challenging or even aggressive atmo-spheres, as in our example: a road tunnel.
The OBO RKS-Magic cable tray is particularly suitablehere, as it is made of, amongst other things, rustproofsteel and can also be installed under the ceiling in aspace-saving manner. The tested screwless joint con-nection allows particularly fast, simple and safemounting.

The installation engineer always selects the material ofthe cable trays according to the existing regulations. In our road tunnel, section mounting takes place witha special tunnel clamp made of rustproof steel. Altern-atively, many other mounting versions are also avail-able, e.g. with suspended supports and brackets.
Junction boxes, which protect the cables against ex-ternal influences such as dust and water, are used tobranch and extend the cables. Here, the OBO FireBoxis installed directly on the tray. Alternatively, mountingon the wall or ceiling is also possible. A fireproof con-nection of wires is ensured through ceramic terminals.
In closed spaces, such as tunnels, maintaining theelectrical supply of ventilation devices and tunnel light-ing is particularly important. In our example, it is nowensured. Thus, in the event of fire, the smoke extrac-tion fan can be operated safely and extract the lethalsmoke. People can be evacuated safely.

Special solutionsWhen "standard" is not suffi-cient
Maintenance of the fire sections, securing of escaperoutes and maintaining the electrical supply: depend-ing on the building, very different solutions are neces-sary or possible, in order to cover all three protectionaims safely. Frequently, special solutions are also ne-cessary, e.g. if fire protection technology is to be retro-installed in old and existing buildings.
If standard solutions are no longer sufficient for in-stalling safe fire protection technology, planners, archi-tects and installation engineers rapidly come upagainst their limits. It's therefore good that there arefire protection experts who can give you advice andwho can identify adapted solutions!
With 40 years of experience in fire protection, OBO isa reliable partner with regard to building-specific spe-cial solutions. Our fire protection experts can lookback on many implemented projects and, with eachnew case, reach agreements with all those involved. We can find feasible and economic special solutionsfor even the trickiest cases which can also be imple-mented quickly.

Special solutions must often be found for externalareas of buildings. Cable bandages to prevent thespread of fire must, for example, be weatherproof. Here, this is achieved with the OBO PYROWRAP® Wetcable bandage. It is also suitable for additional specialapplications, e.g. in offshore areas or power stationconstruction.
Sensitive building areas, such as this server room, require special protection. Here,a special solution can provide double assistance: Fire protection ducts are routedunder the raised floor. If there is a cable fire, the fire and smoke cannot spread un-impeded in the raised floor. In our example, the OBO PYROLINE Rapid® fire pro-tection duct made of internally coated sheet steel is used.

Tested qualityFire protection without comprom-ises
There can be no compromises with fire protection: Inan emergency, every product used must function ab-solutely reliably and also comply with legal and con-struction regulations. As an OBO customer, you canrely on tested quality. Our fire protection experts sub-ject every newly developed product to comprehensivetests in accredited testing institutes. In doing so, weorientate ourselves to national and international testingstandards, such as DIN, EN, IEC and ANSI.
Independent testers inspect the results and assign theappropriate proofs of suitability, such as approvals, evaluations or test certificates, to our products. In theDownloads area at www.obo-bettermann.com, youcan view and download all the fire protection certific-ates of our products.
We like to make every effort for our fire tests! Whenwe test our cable support systems that maintain theelectrical supply in a fire, we test the entire cable sys-tem, consisting of the routing systems and cables withthe integrated function of maintaining the supply ofelectricity. We subject the entire system to the practic-al test in a fire and test whether our products can with-stand the temperatures of up to 1,000 °C.
Often, we even carry out such fire tests in the develop-ment phase of a product. The results are then takeninto account when further developing the product. Inthe end, we have absolutely safe and practical solu-tions, which meet the requirements of the market.

OBO fire protectionhistory
It's now 40 years ago that OBOtook its first steps in the field of fireprotection. In 1977, OBO engin-eers developed the first solutionsin the field of insulation. Today, wecan look back over many decadesof experience and, with ourproducts and knowledge, can cov-er the three aims of fire protection.
Now as then, we want to be pion-eers: In 1987, we worked on thevery first German standard formaintaining the supply of electricityin the event of fire. Today too, ourexperience and knowledge flowsinto new standards. We find solu-tions that always fulfil the currentrequirements of the industry and ofconstruction law.
Rely on 40 years of fire protectionexperience! We look forward tocelebrating our anniversary yearwith you!
