Behold Our Light Service - 5:30 pm
2
On Sunday, as we sing our final hymn, the crucifer stands before us holding the cross and then carries the symbol of our Lord through our assembly, as the One who has met us in the Word and in the Meal calls us out into the world to serve in his name. As one of your pastors, it is a holy honor to walk through the assembly and see your faces turn to look at the cross, to hear your songs of praise rise and fall, to witness as some choose to reverence the cross, and to imagine all the ways you are being sent out to encounter and serve Christ in the world.
This holy moment of turning captures where we are as a congregation right now. Just as worship concludes with the familiar Lutheran dismissal of “Go in peace, serve the Lord. Thanks be to God!” so we are moving from a time of focus on worship to a time of focus on service. As put forth by the Long-Range Plan presented to the congregation in March 2016, we turn from a year of highlighting the objective of worship to a year of focusing on the objective of service, as we give God thanks for a year of deepening our worship life by moving to celebrate Holy Communion at all our service and beginning a third worship service, which has come to be called Behold Our Light.
As we turn to a year of service, our objective is to “Cultivate Christ-like servants who respond to God’s grace by loving our neighbors as ourselves.” The Long-Range Planning Team, which met for nearly a year (from April 2015 to February 2016), gathered regularly for prayer, the reading of scripture, and holy conversation and has now set before us words from the Gospel of Mark: “For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” The world around us and the culture-at-large asks ‘What’s in it for me?’ The world around and the culture-at-large has a thousand products for purchase that will fix things we didn’t know were wrong with us! Jesus, on the other hand, invites us to be disciplined in his ways of serving, giving, and humbling ourselves in order to lift up our neighbor, especially the ones who are often overlooked, the poor, the vulnerable, and those who have no one to advocate for them.
Throughout the year, the pages of our newsletters and the pages of our weekly bulletins are absolutely filled with news about the many ministries our congregation is already deeply involved with: CARITAS, Lutheran Family Services Foster Care Assistance, Habitat for Humanity, HHOPE Pantry, Thanksgiving Baskets, Christmas Giving Tree, Easter Baskets, LAMB’s Basket, our Epiphany Garden, Micah, Camp Caroline Furnace, Liberation Veterans Services, ACTS, our quilters group, Shalom Farms, and more. Our hope and our goal for this coming year is to deepen these relationships even more and to also be open to new opportunities to serve.
Perhaps your own family would like to set a goal this year of volunteering with one of these partners. Perhaps there is another opportunity to serve in the congregation, the community, or in the world that you would like to participate in. Perhaps you would like to invite others to join you in a service opportunity you have planned! As the pastor of our congregation who has primary responsibility for youth ministry, each summer I have the opportunity to go on a service trip with some of the members of our high school youth group and this past summer, for the first time, we did a service week here in Richmond, and what I learn again and again is that part of the joy of service comes from not knowing what that day will hold, but knowing who holds the day. The day we were doing yardwork here in Richmond for a neighbor, we didn’t know that our shovel was going to break, that we would decide this was a sign we needed to stop for slushies at 7-11, and that we would receive the special kind of joy that comes from a spontaneous moment of refreshment in the midst of shared work.

Building Team Update
Your Building Team appreciates the many comments and questions concerning Vision 2020 which the
congregation passed in November 2016. After selecting an architect, reviewing requirements, and developing
concepts, it is felt that now is the time to have the congregation vote on the results of the process.
If all goes according to plan, a congregational meeting will be scheduled around the end of September. At that
time the congregation will be asked to approve a contract with the architect to produce a more realistic and
more detailed design based on priority of requirements. It is NOT a vote to begin construction.
At the same meeting, a vote to approve the Capital Campaign will be taken.
Please see any member of the Building Team if you have any further questions or comments. Team members are: Pastor Martin, team leader Steve Collins, Carole Alfriend, Janet Card, Bill Hockman, Russ Johnson, Joel McKean, Karen Myers, Brian Ozlin, Christine Quann, Ray Spletzer, and Paul Sweet.
WALK THE JOURNEY WORSHIP THE CHRIST WITNESS WITH JOY
We are thankful to Carolyn Huntley for the donation of a
needlework piece of the church seasons that was designed
and stitched by her late husband, the Reverend Joe
Huntley.
It is now hanging on the wall in our Commons for
everyone to see and enjoy. Thank you to the Huntley
family for your generosity and sharing your eye for beauty
and theology.
As we imagine together as a congregation what a year of service looks like, we do not know exactly what the future holds, but we know who holds the future. Jesus invites us to step out of our comfort zone and risk ourselves to serve those in need, as we look to him and to the cross, as he shows us what service looks like in the way he gives his life for us and for a world in need.
For a prayer, I offer words from a hymn in our Evangelical Lutheran Worship hymnal, “Lord Jesus, You Shall Be Our Song:” As long as I live, Jesus, make me your servant, To carry your cross and to share all your burdens and tears. For you saved me by giving your body and blood. As long as I live, Jesus, make me your servant. Amen. Pastor Joseph Bolick

Finance Ministry
As of July 31st year to date, our receipts of $421,406 are ahead of budget by $4,993 and expenses of $371,411 are $16,168 less than budget. We have a favorable surplus of $49,995 which is ahead of our budgeted surplus of $28,834 by $21,161.
Regular member giving is $408,368 which is ahead of budget by $6,619 for the year and up 2% over 2016 after adjusting for the extra week YTD 2016 vs 2017. Total income is 4,993 ahead of budget.
Total expenses year to date are $371,411 which is $16,168 below our budget due to favorability in Property expenses in Building Maintenance (less snow and pending tree pruning), Janitorial (pending floor and carpet cleaning) and timing of expenditures in Christian Ed, Worship & Administration.
Compared to prior year, total expenses are favorable by $28,275 due to staffing changes and timing of insurance payments.
Requesting Council Member Suggestions from the Congregation
The 2017 Nominating Team is asking for you to suggest persons to be considered for the list of council nominees that will be presented at our annual meeting in November. During the month of September, pew slips will be available for you to recommend persons you feel would be good leaders of our congregation.

Worship and Music Ministry Dear Christians, One and All, Rejoice!
To cap off our Rally Day activities, we are fortunate that Epiphany will be the site for a hymn festival of Luther Hymns on Sunday, September 10 at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. The festival will include commentary and organ pieces led by the Rev. Dr. Paul Weber and Florence Jowers, retired leaders of the Sacred Music program at Lenoir Rhyne University. There is an opportunity for folks who like to sing and would like to be a part of the “choir” that leads this service – all you have to do is come at 1:30 on September 10 and we will set you up with all you need!
If you don’t want to help lead, we need an assembly to sing and listen. Please come be a part of this wonderful opportunity to learn a little more about the hymns of Martin Luther in commemoration of this 500th anniversary year of the Reformation. We celebrate the ever forming church!
Most of Luther’s hymns were composed in 1523-1524 as he was making worship reforms in Wittenberg, Germany. Used in worship, at school, and in the home, these hymns became one of the chief tools in teaching the faith and inspired Luther’s followers to become a singing church. Luther’s hymns speak to us today in powerful ways just as they did centuries ago. They tell us about a merciful and sustaining God, who nurtures faith and strengthens our resolve to be God’s people in a time of challenge and unrest.
Luther’s hymns will be sung in creative ways throughout the program. Ms. Jowers will play organ interludes and chorale preludes on the hymn tunes to show how important they have remained in the history of church music. Dr. Weber will provide narration throughout the program descriptive of each hymn and will share the meaning of the texts sung.
Thank you
We are especially thankful to all those who shared their musical offerings with us in worship throughout the summer. We appreciate your willingness to share your God-given talents. Our participants this year included Matthew Barger, Sallie Bartholomew, William Bice, Amelie Bice, Matthew Boyle, Erin Freeman, Gail Lyddane, Bobby Mawyer, Carol McKean, Alice Peyton, Steven Peyton, Members of the Richmond Clarinet Choir, Connie Tuttle, and VBS Participants. Thank you!

Continuation of Acts: Seeing God’s Power in Action
Sometimes our lives seem powerless. Not so for the people of
the early church. Jesus transformed their lives and they changed
the world! Acts is the extraordinary record of what they did. The
power that we see in action in this book is the same power that
can transform our lives. Join us Tuesdays at 10:30am and
Wednesdays at 6:30pm in Sala Chapel to begin to understand
what the Holy Spirit can do in you and in the world.
Specific Lesson information for each week is available on the Faith Formation Board in the Commons!
Thursday Morning Bible Study
Mom’s Bible Study meets Thursday mornings in Sala Chapel.
The nursery opens at 9:15 am and discussion starts at 9:30 am.
On Thursday, September 14, bring a dish to share as we
reconnect after the summer hiatus with our Kick Off Brunch
and receive the new study guide for our series this fall:
“Twelve More Women of the Bible”
Beginning Thursday, September 21, this 12-session small
group Bible study, will take us through spiritual lessons learned
from twelve biblical women and what they mean for your life
today.

September Baptism Birthdays
Thank You
To the members of Epiphany, It was my pleasure to accept the beautiful flowers that were in the Sanctuary of our beautiful church. I love my church and wish I could be there more often to sing the hymns and pray with you at Epiphany. Thank you so much for thinking of me. In your prayers, fondly, JoAnn Melhorn
The FORWARDING FAITH CAMPAIGN was launched by
our Virginia Synod to provide permanent funding for its
youth and faith formation ministries, including Seventh Day,
Lost & Found, Winter Celebration and Kairos.
Thanks to these ministries, generations of leaders in our
Synod and across the Church have been brought up to know
and love God in Jesus Christ.
Now, thanks to your generosity, these youth and faith
formation ministries will continue with excellence far into the future.
Through your generosity, Epiphany has raised over $190,000 in support of the mission that is the
FORWARDING FAITH CAMPAIGN, bringing the total raised throughout our Synod to over $2.2 million of
the $2.5 million goal!
Thank you for your generous support, and thanks be to God! (For further information about the
FORWARDING FAITH CAMPAIGN or to make a donation, please visit - www.forwardingfaith.org.)

Prayer Shawl Ministry
“God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday
“God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday is an opportunity to
celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America — one church, freed in Christ to
serve and love our neighbor. On Sunday, September 10,
the nearly 10,000 congregations of this church gather to
serve communities in ways that share the love of God
with all of God’s people.
In celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, Epiphany’s project will be the assembling of 500 Personal Care Kits. The supplies needed for these kits have been ordered, and the cost per kit is $4.14. During the month of August, we will be collecting money to cover the cost of 500 kits, so that we are ready to assemble them in Price Hall on Rally Day, September 10.
The kits will be distributed through Lutheran World Relief, and any additional funds collected will be sent to
LWR to be used to cover the cost of adding toothpaste and delivering them overseas.
Please make donations in the Commons.
Our Mission Statement: The Prayer Shawl Ministry has been created to provide comfort for those in need of God’s embrace.
Epiphany has a great group of ladies that will be providing Prayer Shawls for those in need of comfort and inner strength. Our next meeting will be in OCTOBER due to unforeseen weddings arising and at that time we will meet in the parlor on the first Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m., October 5th, 2017. There is always room for at least 1 or 2 more so please don't hesitate to attend. Lessons will also be offered. We would love to teach the youth of our church to knit or crochet. If you would like to learn this art, please either call me or attend our meeting. If you would like to work from home and not attend our meetings, we would love to count you as one of our members also. You are welcome to request a Prayer Shawl for someone you know that is in need of comfort. Simply go the church office and Hanne can assist you with your need. If anyone has plastic storage bins that they would like to donate for us to store the prayer shawls in, that would be marvelous. Please contact Jackie Collins at 703 304 8568 if you have any items to donate and to arrange a pick-up. Thanking you in advance for your interest and donations.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS
Nursery School News
I can hardly believe that the summer is over and we are set to get
back to school. I know that we are all looking forward to sending
our children back and getting into our routines again. I am looking
forward to seeing all of the smiling faces back in our halls – it’s been
a little quiet in the education wing most of the summer.
We have a couple of new staff members that we would like to
welcome to ELNS this year! Erica Braatz, an Epiphany church
member, will be our new Green class (1 year olds) lead teacher.
Erica formerly taught in elementary schools before starting her own
family. Her sons, Blake and Mason, will both be attending ELNS. Nicole Sawyer will join us 2 days a week
(Tues/Thur) as a 2nd assistant teacher in the Orange class (2 year old). Mrs. Sawyer was a long-term substitute
for us last year in our 1-year-old class and we are excited to have her join us permanently. We feel so lucky to
have such great additions to the staff and blessed that the school continues to grow.
We also wanted to let you know about our 3rd annual Fall Carnival which will take place on September 30 and
all are welcome to attend! There will be games, a raffle, sports, food, and possibly a couple of craft vendors
all here at the school from 10 am to 1 pm! All money raised will go directly to the preschool to fund capital
improvements at the school and on the playgrounds. If you would like to volunteer that morning to help at
some of our games or in other areas, please get in touch as soon as possible (volunteer hours can count
towards school requirements for high school and middle school students). We hope to see many of you at the
carnival! More information will be in the Sunday bulletins later this month.
We are continuing to get calls and schedule tours for this coming school year. Our 2-year-old class is on a waiting list but our other age groups still have a few openings. If you or your friends are still looking for a great child’s morning out or preschool program, be sure to schedule a time to come and talk with me and take a tour of our classrooms. You can also get a lot of great information about our program at www.epiphanylutherannurseryschool.com. Thank you all for your continued support of Epiphany Lutheran Nursery School. I am looking forward to a
wonderful year!
Sincerely,
Jessica Hendricks, Director ELNS

Women’s Circles
Ever want to know what is discussed at Council meetings? Our
Council Secretary, Ramona Schaeffer, posts monthly summaries of
all the Council minutes on the bulletin board in the Commons (The
bulletin board near the doughnut table). Copies of Council minutes
are also available in the office during the week.
Virginia Lutheran Women have been busy this past year making Sole Hope shoe kits to be sent to Uganda. Most children go barefoot and are subject to a tiny chigger that bores into their feet, causing pain and infections. This project helps not only the children in Uganda with foot care, but their communities as well providing shoes, jobs, and HOPE!
Epiphany Women are proud to report that we spent over one hundred hours, have cut and assembled 180 shoe kits. These were blessed at Worship Services on Sunday, August 13th and will be delivered to the Virginia Synod Women’s Organization (VSWO) Convention in Roanoke August 17th.
On Sunday, August 13th the congregation cheerfully dug into their pockets to donate $579.00 for this project. Together with donations from all the Circles and the Coordinating Council of WELCA; we were able to send $1,800.00, and a box of medical supplies along with the shoe kits. THANK YOU for your support.
Thank you for all the contributions to VA Women’s Correctional Centers. Epiphany has donated 350 All
Occasion cards, 35 pkg. of stationery, 59 Forever Stamps, 965 envelopes, 131 pens and pencils, 30 sts of
decorated paper. These will be added to all that is collected at the VSWO Convention and will be part of the
service project, alongside the shoe kits for Sole Hope.
15
Fellowship Ministry
After a great turnout (and lots of fun) at last December’s “Beer & Carols” event, we’ve decided to gather again for singing and fellowship in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Like Luther himself, we will gather in a public space and join our voices in praise of God.
Join us at Strangeways on August 31 @ 7pm
WEDNESDAY EVENING MEALS
Beginning September 13, all are welcome to join us for food, fellowship, and
faith each Wednesday beginning with dinner in Price Hall at 5:45 pm. Choir
rehearsals, Bible Studies, and Confirmation classes are offered.
Suggested donations for the evening meal are $5/adult and $3/child 12 and
under. Household max is $20.00.
Please sign up at the Welcome Desk in the Commons or email the church
office by Monday night at churchoffice @epiphanyelca.org
The menus are posted on the church’s website at www.epiphanyelca.org and
on the sign up sheets.

"CARITAS helps our most vulnerable neighbors break the cycles of addiction and homelessness to reclaim their dignity." You can find more info like this here: https://caritasva.org/about-us/our-mission/
We call upon the congregation to welcome our CARITAS guests from September 30th to October 7th.
Again, Epiphany will welcome 32 women for which we will need over 125 members of our church to help provide them with a warm place to sleep, a place to rest, eat, shower, and even just a warm smile. We will have many jobs in which members can volunteer for including cooking and or serving dinner, making 8 lunches, laundering towels, playing music or sharing any other gift you have to offer.
This ministry is only successful with the good work of this congregation. Please prayerfully consider serving during this week. Most all jobs just require a couple of hours of service. If this is your first time working we will make sure you have a buddy or guidance. It is a great way to meet others in our congregation.
Sign- up sheets go up the end of August. PLEASE GET INVOLVED
Call Kim Johnson with questions at 282-1603 or email at [email protected]
"At CARITAS we believe the key to halting the spread of homelessness is to bring those who can help face-to-face with those who are in need of help. We invite people from the street and transport them to local congregations to be sheltered, fed, and loved by people who are blessed to have a home. We also provide case management support to help clients find housing, give furnishings once housed, and help a few find employment."

LAMB’s Basket Food Drive
We will be handing out grocery bags with a list of
needed food items for The LAMB’s Basket
on Sunday, September 10, immediately following
both services. We hope that you will provide
support either through buying requested groceries
or providing financial support. Needed items
are: spaghetti, pasta sauce, peanut butter,
macaroni & cheese, tuna fish, pork & bean,
black beans (any protein beans). If you wish to
participate, we ask that you bring your donations to
the church by Sunday, September 24 or as soon
as you are able. Thank you so much for your
continued support for this much needed community
organization. Any questions? Check out
our church display or call Cheryl Hamm at (804)
