Is Your Giving Up-To-Date?
Greetings Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We hope you have had a chance to see the new section of the bulletin: a snapshot of where we are as a
congregation with our giving related to our budget. Why was that information added? Like any family, it is
important we are all aware of our financial situation. For 2015, our giving is down compared to budget:
Treasurer's Report
Envelope offerings for August were right on budget, but giving for the year to date is down 8%, or $35,000.
With “Building Use Fee” up and “Miscellaneous Income” also over budget, revenue is down by 6%, or
$26,085. Total expenses are also down from budget for the year but leaves us with a potential loss of $12,101
as of August. We are continuing to look for ways to cut expense for the year and increase revenue.
As a Congregational Council, we have considered some reasons why this may be:
Economics – we recognize some members may be experiencing hardships related to the current economic
situation
Member changes – like many congregations, some long-time contributors change commitment level due to
circumstances beyond their control. Some have moved from the area.
Other? We’d like feedback here!
What next? First, a gentle reminder – we, as a congregation, committed to the 2015 Budget in front of God.
Second, we are asking you to consider – is your giving up-to-date? Is it possible for you to help a bit more?
Finally, please keep our church and congregation in your prayers.
Together, we can ensure we are able to maintain the 2015 plan as approved and maintain the programs in
place. Also, as we look ahead to 2016, we can be realistic in our budget conversations.
Have any questions? Concerns? Thoughts? Feedback? Please do not hesitate to reach out to anyone on
Congregational Council and/or Finance Team (see below).
Thank you,
Members of the Executive Committee
Jim Yucha (President), Stephanie Paget (Vice President), Matt Greenshields (Secretary), Georgianna Hahn
(Treasurer), Pastor Phillip and Pastor Joseph

NOTES FROM THE CHOIR LOFT
DIRECTOR OF MUSIC MINISTRY, KEVIN BARGER
Children’s Corner
The Singing Saints and Cherub Choir will meet on all four Wednesdays in October for
rehearsal. Cherub Choir meets from 6:30 – 7:00 p.m. in room 104. Singing Saints
meet in the Music Room from 6:30 – 7:10. Junior Handbells will also meet all four
Wednesdays during the month from 7:00 – 7:30 in the balcony.
Singing Saints will participate in worship leadership at both services on October 4
and 25. The Cherub Choir will participate in both services on October 18.
Junior Handbells will play in worship on October 18 as well.
If you haven’t yet made a decision about participating in Singing Saints, please note that we will be starting
preliminary work on the Christmas Musical during October - that is often an important determinant for the
kids!
Epiphany Brass
Members of our brass ensemble will be playing in worship on October 26 (both services). If you are interested
in playing and will be available for that day, please contact Kevin as soon as possible, if you have not already
done so.
Limited Time? Join us for Reformation Sunday!
We will have a combined chancel choir on Sunday, October 26. If you can’t commit to rehearsals regularly,
this might be a great opportunity for you to join the group for a limited trial run! We will rehearse the
Reformation Sunday pieces at the beginning of Wednesday evening rehearsals at about 7:30. If you just want
to do these pieces, you will be free to go as soon as we finish those. We will also be working on these on
Sunday mornings for both the 8:30 and 11:00 choirs. Please consider joining us for this festive service!
The Church’s Journey through art and song
We are working to create a hymn festival that celebrates the church’s hymnody. This festival will occur
sometime in 2016 (date to be determined), and we are hoping to have it be a pan-Lutheran event with
participation from our sister congregations in the Richmond area. If you have interest in serving on the team
that will coordinate and plan this event, please contact Kevin at 746-5756 or [email protected].
We look forward to the planning of a great event!

THIRD GRADE BIBLE PRESENTATION
On Sunday, October 25, Reformation Sunday, the congregation and parents will
present Bibles to our third graders. This tradition began a few years ago as a way to
help fulfill the promises we all make, along with parents, at children’s baptism, “to
place in their hands the Holy Scriptures.”
We present our third graders with a “used” Whirl Lectionary NRSV Bible. A “used”
Bible means that parents, god parents, friends and others have marked their favorite
Bible passages to share with the third grader. We’ve chosen to give the “Whirl
Lectionary NRSV” Bible because the lectionary lessons, which we read on Sunday
during worship, are given special attention. Our congregation follows the Revised
Common Lectionary, which is a three year cycle pattern of Bible readings for each
Sunday in the church year. In the “Whirl” Bible the lectionary readings are highlighted in the liturgical color
of the church season. It lists in the margins of the Bible the other lectionary readings for the day. The are also
age appropriate introductions to the books of the Bible, as well as Preview Activities to accompany Bible
verses.
We also spend two Sundays after the presentation with parents and third graders to go a step further by
exploring our Bibles. On Sundays, November 1 and 8, we will learn how to use the Bible to nurture our
Christian life and faith. These classes will meet in Room 202.
Parents will need to meet on either Sunday, October 18 at 10:00 am in the Star Lodge or Wednesday, October
21 at 6:30 pm in the Parlor to receive your child’s Bible and an explanation of your role in the Bible
presentation.
WORSHIPPING WITH CHILDREN:
It’s more than the Children’s Sermon
Pre-K, Kindergarteners and their parents are
invited to join us October 4 and 11 during the
Sunday School hour. We will talk about
worship and how we live among God’s faithful
people. We will explore the worship bulletin
and answer questions as to why we worship the
way we do. We’ll also have an opportunity to
venture into our worship space, and look at all
the nooks and crannies.
On October 4, we will meet in Room 103 after Opening with Mr. Scott. On October 11, we will meet in the
Sanctuary following Opening with Mr. Scott.

Sunday Morning Offerings—9:45 am
Living the Questions 2.0 with Pastor Tom Bosserman, in
Price Hall. People know that at its core, Christianity has
something good to offer humanity. At the same time, many
have a sense that they are alone in being a Christian and that
"salvaging" Christianity is a hopeless task. What is needed is
a safe environment where people have permission to ask the
questions they've always wanted to ask but have been afraid
to voice for fear of being thought a heretic. Living the
Questions is for both seekers and "church alumni/ae"
convinced that Christianity still has relevance in the 21st
Century. Providing a variety of topics, Living the Questions
helps people explore the future of Christianity and what a
meaningful faith can look like in today's world.
Roots & Practices of Lutheran Christians -Join our called staff in the Chapel for conversations based on the
Lutheran Christian faith. This class is ideal for new(er) members to Epiphany and those who want a refresher
on Lutheran beliefs. A book is available for participants.
Tuesday Morning & Wednesday Evening Offerings
Jeremiah & Lamentations Join us Tuesday mornings at 10:30 am or Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm in the
Chapel. This fall we are exploring the Old Testament books Jeremiah and Lamentations. We encounter many
voices in the pages of these books: the prophet Jeremiah, sundry kings, Jeremiah’s enemies, and a people at
first defiant and later in excruciating torment. In addition, we hear the voice of God speaking through Jeremiah
and Jeremiah’s contemporaries. God, however, does not just speak “back there” and “then.” The living God
speaks to us through the Bible, this book of faith. This study looks at how God is revealed to us as one who
will not rest until we are at last a people whose hearts and minds are molded to the image and likeness of
Jesus.
Thursday Morning Offering
Moms’ Bible Study Join us Thursday mornings in the
Chapel. The nursery opens at 9:15 am and discussion
starts at 9:30 am. We meet to share in the study of
God’s Word using the book Living a Chocolate Life,
and to share in a time of fellowship with moms.

Thank You
Dear Friends of Epiphany,
I want to express my deep appreciation for your Acts of Kindness shown to me during my continuing journey
with Parkinson’s disease. Your visits, cards, flowers and prayers have helped me to rebound from
hospitalizations this summer. Your ministry is invaluable and I thank you.
Sincerely,
John Oehler
Dear Epiphany Lutheran Church,
Thank you so much for the donation of $500. The money is a blessing and came at the right time! We had an
emergency and needed to buy a bed for one of our youth. Additionally, we bought a toddler car seat for one of
our medically fragile youth. Thank you so much for all of your support! We enjoy working with your
congregation.
Sincerely,
Amy Barbour, Richmond Lutheran Family Services Office

It has been an exciting month here at Epiphany Lutheran Nursery
School. We welcomed children back on Tuesday, September 8 and
it is great to finally get to hear all of them playing in the classrooms
and on the playgrounds. Our year has been off to a great start with
very few tears and lots of happy faces!!
While our enrollment numbers are going up, we still have open
spaces in all of our classes. There are only a few spaces for ages 1-3.
If you have friends or family members who are still looking for a
school this fall, please make sure and tell them about us! You can
keep up to date on what is happening at our website www.EpiphanyLutheranNurserySchool.com. We are
also on Facebook. Be sure to look for Epiphany Lutheran Nursery School and “Like” us to keep up to date on
what is happening in the Education Wing.
We are building an ark!! Starting Saturday,
September 26, we will be constructing the new
wooden ark for the larger playground. If you would
like to volunteer on one of our build days, please
visit our sign up genius and let us know when you
can come. The link is http://bit.ly/1Kx00zL. We
hope to see you there!!
Our biggest fundraiser of the year, the Holiday Stop & Shop, will be held on November 7 from 9 am to 3 pm.
This year we are not doing our usual used book sale but instead we are having a Fall Festival for preschool
age children. There will be lots of great games to play, prizes to win, food trucks for lunch, a hot chocolate
bar, and many other exciting things! The festival is rain or shine – we will just move into the Education Wing
if the weather is bad. If you would like to help with the Stop & Shop or the Fall Festival, please get in touch
with Elisa Hayden at [email protected].
We are doing the Martin’s Bonus Card program again this year! If you shop at Martin’s, please consider
designating our school to receive a percentage of your purchases. You can do that online at
martinsfoods.com/aplus or you can email the school your Bonus Card number and I can designate that for
you. Our school code for registering is 25800 or you can search by name. Our email is
[email protected]. We are also now participating in the Amazon Smile program. If you shop at
Amazon.com, you can now go to smile.amazon.com and select Epiphany Lutheran Nursery School as your
designated non-profit. We will then earn a percentage of all of your qualifying purchases. These are 2 very
easy ways to help support the nursery school!
We are always looking for new substitute teachers for those times when our teachers have to miss school. If
you are interested in being on our sub list, please get in touch. Feel free to stop by the school anytime! My
office hours are 8 am – 3 pm, Monday-Friday. You can also give me a call at 282-7506.

LAMB’s Basket Food Drive – We hope that
you will provide support either through buying
requested groceries or providing financial
support. Needed items are: Canned Pasta Sauce,
Canned Meat, Canned Vegetables, Canned
Fruit, Mac and Cheese, 16 oz. box of Spaghetti,
Cereal, Peanut Butter, and Grape Jelly. If you
wish to participate, we ask that you bring your
donations to the church by Sunday, October 11,
and leave them in the Narthex. Thank you so
much for your continued support for this much
needed community organization. Any questions,
check out our church display or call Cheryl
Hamm at (804) 399-7650.
CARITAS - Our next week is October 17-24 (Congregation Around Richmond Involved to Assure Shelter)
It is to those who have the most need of us that we ought to show our love more especially.
St. Francis de Sales
We call upon the congregation to welcome our CARITAS guests
from October 17-24. Again, Epiphany will welcome 40 women
who are experiencing homelessness, for which we will need over
125 members of our congregation to help provide them with a warm place to sleep, a place to rest, eat, shower,
and even just a warm smile.
We will have many jobs in which members can volunteer for including cooking and/or serving dinner, making
10 lunches, launder towels, play music or any other gift you have to offer. Sign- up sheets are in the
Commons.
Please prayfully consider what gift or time you have to offer. Most jobs just require a couple of hours of your
time and is a great way to serve with others in the congregation.
We are collecting travel size deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, and toothbrushes.
CARITAS is Richmond's largest emergency shelter, sheltering up to 110 people per night, and over 1,000
people annually. They provide over 90% of the shelter beds available to single women. The hard work of
15,000 volunteers and 155 host congregations creates a safe and hospitable place for our most vulnerable
citizens.

Boxes for Thanksgiving Baskets
Sure, it’s just October, but …..
Community Service Team needs help now
In gathering boxes for our annual
Thanksgiving Basket Program
As most know, Epiphany’s Thanksgiving “baskets” are really those sturdy copy paper boxes (with lids) used
all over in offices. We have some boxes on hand, but we need 60 more to provide for this year’s distribution
goal.
We ask church members to please bring copy paper boxes to church as early as possible so the team can be
ready for our collection’s start on November 1. Thank you.
THANKSGIVING BASKETS
Continuing Epiphany’s long tradition of providing food for a Thanksgiving meal for some of our neighbors
experiencing hunger, the Community Service Team will be collecting non-perishable food and monetary
donations for Thanksgiving baskets in November. Based on our congregation’s loving response last year, we
are aiming for filling 80 baskets. Please help. There is much need.
Team members will hand out grocery bags with attached lists of needs for a holiday meal for 1 family of six to
Epiphany members after services on November 1. If you can provide all the needs for one basket, that will be
great. But if you can’t, you still can help by providing some of the items, and Team members will fill in as
needed. Donations should be brought to the church by Sunday, November 15.
As we did last year, we are asking for cash or check donations to be used to purchase special gift cards for
turkeys for each basket. If you’d rather not shop, but still want to help provide the basket’s basic items, the
Team will gratefully accept money to help with purchasing these basic items as well.
Epiphany’s baskets will be distributed along with baskets from other Henrico churches to recipients through
HEARTH (Henrico Emergency Assistance to Reduce Threat of Homelessness), and to Lutheran Family
Service’s foster families.

Columbarium and Memorial Garden
UPDATE ON EPIPHANY’S
MEMORIAL GARDEN AND
COLUMBARIUM
Nestled between Epiphany’s chapel and the
Star Lodge is our Memorial Garden and
Columbarium. This unique structure faces the
huge Cross to remind everyone of the promise
of eternal life through Jesus Christ. All
members of our congregation, former or
current, and their immediate families are
encouraged to consider this facility for their
loved ones when it becomes necessary to make
end of life decisions. Available options include a Memorial Plaque, a Niche for inurnment, or the Garden for
interred remains. The Memorial Garden and Columbarium is a sacred place to remember the Saints who have
gone on before us and, for some, a final resting place. We encourage you to visit our Memorial Garden and
Columbarium for reflection and prayer. This is an important ministry and part of Epiphany’s overall mission
to serve God’s people. The facility is operated and maintained through direct donations to its Ministry Fund
under Epiphany Evangelical Lutheran Church and through subscription of a memorial plaque, a niche, or a
garden internment. An information packet containing copies of updated materials is available in the church
office and you may contact a Ministry Team member with your questions and comments. Visit the facility and
you will be embraced with a strong sense of peace.

and Tracey Fatzinger
ALTAR FLOWER MINISTRY
The Altar Flower Ministry would like your help. Altar Flowers,
which are designated to give, are delivered to those who are ill,
hospitalized or homebound. The pastors keep us appraised of
persons who might appreciate the flowers.
I would like to invite you to share names with us as well. If you
know of someone who might benefit from the gift of Altar flowers, it
can be arranged. It may be for a reason other than illness. Sometimes
it may be just to let them know we are thinking of them.
This has happened in the past and it was rewarding for everyone.
Donna Rothermel plans deliveries and communicates this
information to the volunteers who deliver the flowers. If you have
suggestions, please call her at 364-2537. Thank you!

Margaret Miller Circle will meet Tuesday, October 13th at 10 am. Anyone who may
have an interest in joining or learning about the mission and activities of a Circle please
feel free to call Cheryl Froom 754-7129 or Donna Josephson 883-5955.
We rejoice in welcoming you!
The Clara Sullivan Circle Meeting will be hosted by Jan Busch on October 14, at
10:00 am. Devotions and program will be by Caroline Wake. A Thank Offering will be
collected.
Katie Luther Circle (former ly known as Heidi Michaelson Circle) will meet on the evening of Thursday,
October 8th at Peggy Roberts' home. At our September meeting, we decided to change the name of our
circle. Heidi Michaelson, who our circle was named for, was ordained as a Lutheran pastor and missionary in
El Salvador in 1995 but resigned in 1998. We feel it is time to honor a different bold woman with our circle
name. If anyone is interested in joining our circle, please contact Tatter Hartmann at 804-741-0276 or

Introducing…Dottie Jaggers!
Dottie Jaggers joined our church staff as our new Finance Manager in
August. She has been working very closely with our Treasurer,
Georgianna Hahn, to learn and update our system of bookkeeping and assist
the congregation and staff in the stewardship of our budget. Dottie will be
primarily responsible for generating the financial reports for Council and the
congregation. She will also oversee payroll and the management of benefits
for our staff. She comes to Epiphany with many years of experience in the
non-profit sector, and she is also a Certified Public Accountant. We are very
thankful for the expertise and professionalism that Dottie brings to this
position. This new part-time position involves 12-15 hours per week. She
will be sharing the tellers’ office with our tellers and volunteer Financial
Secretary, Bruce Garringer. Originally from New Jersey, Dottie has been a
resident of Virginia for many years and now resides in Sandston.
Welcome, Dottie!
On November 1, 2:00 am, we will “Fall Back” by
turning our clocks back one hour! Mark your
