Chalk Boards vs. Projectors

Chalk Boards• Framed with wood to

keep from breaking, and marked on with shards of slate

• Used in the 19th century to save paper

• In the 1990s potential health risks posed by chalk dust prompted the replacement of many blackboards with whiteboards

Projectors • Projectors began to be

widely used in schools in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

• Teaching materials can be preprinted on transparencies, which can be written on and reused.

• Today projectors are slowly being replaced by computer projection systems, interactive whiteboards, etc. due to technology advancement in society.

Notebooks Transfer into Computers

1780 – The teacher is the primary manager of instruction and assessment in a single classroom. 1946 – First vacuum tube-based computers developed but used only for the war effort. Notebooks and paper are the main classroom component. 1954- General electric is the first business to order a computer.

1992- Schools begin using gopher servers to provide students with on-line information 1994- Most U.S. classrooms have at least one PC available for instructional delivery 1995- The internet and world wide web gains popularity with the public 1997-2007- More computers are stored in schools . Educators store graphic, video, and sound files for educational applications

Hardcopy vs. Electronic Copy

• A study by Neşet Demirci – There was not a statistical difference in what

students preferred – No difference in the scores that the students received

on both kinds of assignments. • Costs

– Electronic devices are higher in cost than paper and pencil, but not in the long run

– This article points out the security, and ease of access with electronic file storage. This information was found on this website:

• Palm Pilots – The Palm Pilot is lightweight, and has many functions

that can be used in the classroom– the average K-12 student will save two trees a year by

doing their homework on a Palm Pilot.
