SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA. There is a good deal of anxiety on the -part of many of the citizens of Anacostia in reference to the threatened trouble be- tween the street railway company and its employes, and same of the former are exerting themselves to the utmost to pre- vent a strike. The situation at this time appears to be that the drivers would pre- fer that Mr. Griswold shall take off some of the cars, thus operating fewer than at present, rather than reduce the wages to .25 per day, as proposed. It is said by some who enjoy the confidence of the offi- cers of the Protective Street Railway Union that if the number of cars is reduc- ed the latter can have no right to Inter- fere, but that If the wages are cut a strike will certainly be ordered. This both the drivtrs and the citizens of Anacostia are, as stated, opposel to. and. as some of the drivers have already said they would rather take their place on the extra list than have the wages cut, it is believed the idea of running fewer cars will be adopted by the company. Mr. Harry Lewis, a teacher in the Burr- ville public schoil. near Benning. was thrown from a carriage in which he was driving to school yesterday morning by his horse running away, and, although the vehicle was demolished, he escaped injury. The announcement by the excise board that they will receive no applications for licenses after Thursday rext has revived interest in the saloon project in Anacostia, and the friends of the proposedl enterprise are now, it Is said, taking the proper steps to accomplish their object. The recent cool weather and persistent opposition of Sergt. Anderson h've suc- ceeded in breaking up the gathering of men who nightly for months have assem- bled on Railroad avenue and converted that street into a continuous bar room, much to the disgust of all law-abiding cit- isens. TENLEYTOWN. Four new members were added to the Ten- leytown Baptist Church enrollment Sunday, through the efforts of the Central Union Mission. The mission workeis will visit Tenleytown again next Tuesday. Mr. Samuel Hurley has been selected to fill the Sunday school superintendency made vacant recently through the death of Mr. King. Other officers !hosen were Mr. Charles Hurley and Mr. Henry Burrows, who will serve as deacons: Mrs. Mary Cost. treasurer. Pastor G. W. McCillough is aid- ing Dr. J. S. Lodge in the reviveil meetings. Pastor Smith of the Tenlevtown M. E. Church is very low with typhoid fever. The riders of the Tenleytown sectln are all astir over the tournament to comA off today in the Dumblane groun Is, under the auspices of St. Anne's Catho!ic A'l Society. The affair promises to be pre uctive of much pleasant rivalry. Mr. W. J. Mullin mill be marshal of the day and Mr. Joe Enders will also look to the management of the contests. On Wednesday there wil. -be an open-air concert of excellence. Mr. and Mrs. Mallon, parents of the Rev. Father Mallon of St. Anne's Church, have taken up their residehze on the river road. Tenleytown. HYATTSVILLE. This village was thrown into a state of excitemebt about 8:30 o'clock last night by the burning of a large-sized wood shed ad- joining the parsonage of St. Jerome's Cath- olic Church. The fire was first discovered tyi several small tbos, who immediately gave the alarm and brought a number of citizens to the spot. The darkness of the niglt. utised' tIW blase of the burning building to be seen for a considerable dis- tagne., ThQ citizens worked hard to subdue the flames with the aid of the old hand- pump -engine, but their efforts proved in- effectual, and the shed was soon destroyed. The building was located very near the Catholic Church, parsonage and stable of that church, and for awhile they seemed in danger of catching fire, and the excite- ment was great. An amusing incident happened during the fire by a prominent ettlzen,' who' was' assisting in fighting the flames, falling into a barrel of water which was being carried-te the burning building. It is thought that the fire originated from a barrel of coal oil that was kept in the shed being ignited. The new Howe chem- ical and water fire engine which was re- cently voted by the town commissioners, and which is now at the station, was not brought into requisition. A meeting of the citizens of Hyattsville will be held at the office of Justice Carr at 7:30 o'clock tomor- row night for the purpose of organizIng a volunteer fire company. BROOKLAND. Although the Catholio University opened %%at week there has been but little done in the way of study. Classes had to be ar- ranged, so the professors were kept busy. With this week, however, the students be- gin work. Scattered throughout this vicin- Ity there are quite a number who will at- tend the utniversity. Mrs. Smoote, in Brook- land, has as her guests six students, Mr. Joseph G. Powers, Mr. James J. Powers, Mr. Geo. V. Powers, Mr. Francis P. Gull- foile, Mr. M. F. Kennedy and Mr. John J. O'Brien. The Messrs. Powers, who are from Peekskill, N. Y., will pursue civil en- g'neering, as also will Mr. James Dickey of Covington, Va., who is the guest of Mrs. T. G. Carmick. Mr. Guilfoile of Water- bury, Conn., and Mr. Kennedy of Williams- burg, Pa., will take as special studies philosaphy and law. Mr. O'Brien, who will also pursue philosophy and law, is from Wheeling, W. Va., where he attended St. Mary's College, at which institute he stud- led the higher branches of the sciences, and was considered a young man of rare capabilities. Prof. F. Cameron. who is from the south, is stopping at Mrs. Page's in.University Heights. As professor of chemistry, he will assist Dr. Griffin. An- other student in Brookland is Mr. Cornelius Hooley, who is stopping at Mr. Harry Dowlng's residrence on Lar sing street. Mr. Hooley la from Staunton, Va., and he will take a course in languages at the McMa- hon Halt. "The Eckington"~ also has sev- eral of the professors and a number of students. Among the faculty are Rev. Dr. E. T. Shanahan, professor of philosophy; Mr. Philip N. Robinson. LL. B., son of Judge Robinson, registrar of the universi- ty; Rev. Dr. John J. Griffin. professor of chemistry. and Judge William C, Robinson, LL. D., dean of the faculty of social sci- ences and professor of law. Judge Robin- son and hIs son are only at "The Ecking- ton" temporarily, for it will not he long be- fore the judge and his family will take up their resiilence in their cottage in the uni- versity gcrounds, which is almost completed. All the students at "The Eckington" will pursue the study of iaw. Among them are Messrs. Win. T. ('ashman of Boston, Geo. S. Coiel of New York, H. Lamar Monarch of Owensboro', Ky... Thomas D. Motte, Jr., of Los Angeles. Cal.. Geo. J. Twohey of Norfolk, Va., and Win. H. McBam of Hay- erhill, Mass. The students seem thorough- ly pleased with the pretty suburbs in which they are making a temporary home. The university term has but just begun, and it Is probable that other students will take up their abode in this vicinity. A new building Is beipg erected at the Soldiers' Home. This is an amusement hali, where entertainments and operas on a larger scale than heretofore could be done will be given for the soldiers. The building is situated back of the main build- ing. The contractors are Messrs. Winnfree and Esher. The lower part of the building is to be of granite and the remainder of white marble, and It will probably be com- pleted the first part of April. After which those present participated, with selections of Scripture, brief prayers, hymns and re- marks. The prediction 4n The Star some days since that Takoma would shortly have a telephone service was verified yesterday, when the Chesapeake and Ohio Telephone Company placed in the post office here one of their long-distance telephones, thereby filling a long-felt want, there having been no telephone service here since the fire, now nearly two years ago. SUBURBAN NEWSANACOSTIA.

There is a good deal of anxiety on the-part of many of the citizens of Anacostiain reference to the threatened trouble be-tween the street railway company and itsemployes, and same of the former are

exerting themselves to the utmost to pre-vent a strike. The situation at this timeappears to be that the drivers would pre-fer that Mr. Griswold shall take off someof the cars, thus operating fewer than atpresent, rather than reduce the wages to.25 per day, as proposed. It is said by

some who enjoy the confidence of the offi-cers of the Protective Street RailwayUnion that if the number of cars is reduc-ed the latter can have no right to Inter-fere, but that If the wages are cut a strikewill certainly be ordered. This both the drivtrs and the citizens of

Anacostia are, as stated, opposel to. and.as some of the drivers have already saidthey would rather take their place on theextra list than have the wages cut, it isbelieved the idea of running fewer carswill be adopted by the company.Mr. Harry Lewis, a teacher in the Burr-

ville public schoil. near Benning. wasthrown from a carriage in which he wasdriving to school yesterday morning byhis horse running away, and, although thevehicle was demolished, he escaped injury. The announcement by the excise board

that they will receive no applications forlicenses after Thursday rext has revivedinterest in the saloon project in Anacostia, and the friends of the proposedl enterpriseare now, it Is said, taking the proper stepsto accomplish their object. The recent cool weather and persistent

opposition of Sergt. Anderson h've suc-ceeded in breaking up the gathering ofmen who nightly for months have assem-bled on Railroad avenue and convertedthat street into a continuous bar room, much to the disgust of all law-abiding cit-isens.

HYATTSVILLE.This village was thrown into a state of

excitemebt about 8:30 o'clock last night bythe burning of a large-sized wood shed ad-joining the parsonage of St. Jerome's Cath-olic Church. The fire was first discoveredtyi several small tbos, who immediatelygave the alarm and brought a number ofcitizens to the spot. The darkness of theniglt. utised' tIW blase of the burningbuilding to be seen for a considerable dis-tagne., ThQ citizens worked hard to subduethe flames with the aid of the old hand-pump -engine, but their efforts proved in-effectual, and the shed was soon destroyed. The building was located very near theCatholic Church, parsonage and stable ofthat church, and for awhile they seemed indanger of catching fire, and the excite-ment was great. An amusing incidenthappened during the fire by a prominentettlzen,' who' was' assisting in fighting theflames, falling into a barrel of water whichwas being carried-te the burning building. It is thought that the fire originated froma barrel of coal oil that was kept in theshed being ignited. The new Howe chem-ical and water fire engine which was re-cently voted by the town commissioners, and which is now at the station, was notbrought into requisition. A meeting of thecitizens of Hyattsville will be held at theoffice of Justice Carr at 7:30 o'clock tomor-row night for the purpose of organizIng avolunteer fire company.
