Larned & Garfield United Methodist Churches The Evangel Notes from the Pastor “The challenge of community building is this; While visions, plans, and committed top leader- ship are important, even essential, no clear vision, nor detailed plan, nor committed group leaders have the power to bring this image of the future into existence without the continued engagement and involvement of citizens.” (Community, the Structure of Belonging, By Peter Block) This is a book that was recommended in January at a meeting, and despite having the flu while there I am glad that I showed up for this discussion. The book is about what it necessary to build a real community, where people care for one another, and are able to work together for a shared vision. Something that has happened here in Larned with people coming together for the dress shop, the theater, the hospital, and many more projects around the community. It is pointed out again and again that it is not leader- ship alone that creates a community, because without people who are willing to pitch in and be part of it - it can’t exist. Just think if people weren’t willing to volunteer to work at the theater it wouldn’t be possible to keep it open. Or if people hadn't been willing to stand up and find a way forward we wouldn’t have a hospital. The same is true in the church, our faith community, if we are not willing to participate in making our vision of what it could be a reality—no amount of effort by a group of leaders will make it happen. I celebrate the leaders of this community who have been willing to engage in a conversation about what being the church in today’s world means. The future however is truly up to all of us - What is your vision of what church could be? And What are you willing to do to make it that? Without your voice and your help we can’t become the community you dream of. Some because a small group can only do so many things and some because as the “Deep & Wide” book tells us for those of us who have been here everything is where we put it and we are ok with that. The Evangel Notes from the Pastor “The challenge of community building is this; While visions, plans, and committed top leader-ship are important, even essential, no clear vision, nor detailed plan, nor committed group leaders have the power to bring this image of the future into existence without the continued engagement and involvement of citizens.” (Community, the Structure of Belonging, By Peter Block)

This is a book that was recommended in January at a meeting, and despite having the flu while there I am glad that I showed up for this discussion. The book is about what it necessary to build a real community, where people care for one another, and are able to work together for a shared vision. Something that has happened here in Larned with people coming together for the dress shop, the theater, the hospital, and many more projects around the community. It is pointed out again and again that it is not leader-ship alone that creates a community, because without people who are willing to pitch in and be part of it - it can’t exist. Just think if people weren’t willing to volunteer to work at the theater

it wouldn’t be possible to keep it open.

We did have a movie, I wasn't

able to go so I can't tell you a lot

about it. With no Bible Study or

TLC there isn't a lot to report.

We need to think about our

Houses of Worship. If we don't

strive to keep up our attendance

and keep our faith strong we may

not have a place to worship at. I

really enjoying going to church

for the presence of all the people

and the wonderful time with our

my faith stay strong with the

members at our little church. The

love abounds and we certainly do

enjoy all the time spent there. I

Vacation Bible School

Lots of fun was had by all! We

hosted VBS at LUMC with

helpers and kids from

GUMC, Sacred Heart, the

Nazarene and Presbyterian

Churches, with the

Presbyterian Church being

the lead church this year.

We had an average of 60 kinder-

garten through fourth graders,

15 middle school and high school

helpers and 15 adult helpers. We

were excited to see so

many teens helping out,

the number of helpers

almost doubled this

year! The kids enjoyed

fun crafts, outdoor rec-

reation, Bible stories, wonderful

snacks and lots of music each day.

McCurdy Trip by Connie Fox

Five hardy women made the trip to the McCurdy

Mission this year--Rev. Bethann, Marilyn Bell,

Amanda Lessard, Amanda Wehrman, and Connie

Fox; they were joined by a team of four from

Paradise, KS. The top priority for the week was

getting classrooms ready for Camp Stars which

started June 9, so we mopped floors, washed desks

and chairs, washed windows and cleaned blinds in a

couple of classrooms. Camp Stars has 50 students

from Kindergarten to 6th grade in "...STEM [Science,

Technology, ?, Math] education and VBS fun for six

weeks."

We also trimmed the never-ending General Mills

Box Tops and Campbell's labels. They currently have

1,600,000 labels ready to mail in to order a new 2015

seven-passenger van! The Box Top funds make

possible field trips, special projects and fun events

like pizza parties.

There is always laundry to do and weeds to pull

and when we left the linens were clean and gardens

around the dorm and in the Peace Garden looked

great.

Not to make you think we only worked, we also

shopped in Santa Fe and rafted the Rio Grande; ask

Rev. Bethann and Amanda Wehrman how cold the

river water was!

Next year's trip is set for the first week in June

again, plan to come along, it's the most rewarding

vacation you'll ever have.

Church Council Minutes June 2014

As just a few people were able

to attend we began the conversa-

tion about section 4 of the Deep &

Wide book, which talks about

making our space and classes irre-

sistible to new people.

So for our August 18th meet-

ing we are asking everyone to

read this section and give

feedback on the questions:

1. What do we want our space to

say about us?

2. Are the space irresistible and

relevant for the activities they

are used for?

3. Are the materials used for

classes engaging and helpful?

We invite all feedback, and this

would be a place where feedback

from someone who hasn’t always

gone here would be very helpful.

Feel free to join us on August

18th at 5:30 or give your feedback

to a member of the council.
