Why Do I Need to Understand Ethical Leadership?

Based on a study by Kang Lee, PhD at University of Toronto & Victoria Talwar,

PhD at McGill University in Montreal of 172 children between the ages of 6-11:

50% of the children cheated on

a task to get a reward for

giving the correct answer

Among the 50%,

93% lied about cheating

Older children were more

sophisticated in their lies

“Well, We All Know That Teenagers Lie! So What?”

Children often learn lying

from their parents:

“When adults are asked to

keep diaries of their own

lies, they admit to about

one lie per every five

social interactions, which

works out to one per day,

on average.”

Profession?

“Fraud and falsification are highly destructive to market capitalism

and, more broadly, to the

underpinnings of our society…

Our market system depends

critically on trust. Trust in the

word of our colleagues and

trust in the word of those

with whom we do business.”

What messages do you want to send about your values and the values of your

organization?

What Would The ULTIMATE Ethical Leader Ask?:

“Is it legal?

Does it comply with our workshop rules & guidelines?

Is it in-sync with our North Pole values?

Will I be comfortable, guilt-free or even jolly if I do it?

Does it support our goals, commitments and mission?

Would I do it to my family or friends?

Would I be perfectly okay with someone doing it to me?

Would the most ethical individual I know of do it?”

How Can You Self-Assess Your Ethical Leadership

from a Professional Perspective?

“What are my most important values and principles?

Does my calendar (how I spend my time and attention) reflect those values?

What would my subordinates and peers say my values are?

What mechanisms and processes have I designed to be sure that the people

who work for me can push back against my authority?

What could this organization do or ask me to do that would cause me to resign

for ethical reasons?

What do I want to accomplish with my leadership?”

From a Personal Perspective?

“What do I want people

to say about my leadership

when I am gone?

Can I go home at the end

of the day and tell my

children (or a loved on)

about my leadership, and

use my day’s work to teach

them to be ethical leaders?”
