The Episcopal Church of West Oahu the ECWO ECHO VOLUME 2, ISSUE 7 JULY 2015 Young Adult Service Corp of the Episcopal Church Aloha, I am James Fitzpatrick. I am a member of St. Elizabeth’s Church, Honolulu. I have been accepted into the Young Adult Service Corp (YASC) of the Episcopal Church. The Young Adult Service Corps is a ministry for those interested in exploring their faith in new ways by living and serving in communities around the Anglican Com- munion. YASC offers young adults a unique opportunity to be an active part of what God is doing in the world. Also, YASC videos are available at www.episcopalchurch.org/yasc and the video about Episcopal Volunteers in Mis- sion is available at www.episcopalchurch.org/missionaries . My preliminary assignment is in Panama. I will be working with youth outreach at two different locations, one at The Transfiguration in El Empalme, and the other at San Miguel Arcangel in Guabito. I will also be working with a program called Nutre Hogar, a community program that helps under-nourished children return to health. While each YASCer is sent to a different location, and each serves in different capacities, we are all asked to raise at least $10,000 of the roughly $24,000 it takes to send one YASCer abroad for a year of service. I need the help of my fellow Episcopalians in Hawaii, our congregations and clergy to raise the needed funds. Can you please help? I can speak to your congregation or a church group if that can help raise the needed funds. I would be more than happy to explain what YASC is and answer any questions your congregation might have. I would also explain the community work that I have done here in Hawaii, and how those experiences will help me with any challenges I will face while serving the Church abroad. While serving with YASC, I will also be keeping a blog of my experiences, where everyone can follow the work that I will be doing and see what they are supporting. At the suggestion of the YASC, my funds for my mission are being collected through my home Parish and will then be sent to the Episcopal Church Center. Donations can be sent to the following: St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church 720 N. King St. Honolulu, HI 96817-5791 Or payments can be made through the Parish website at http://stelizabeth720.org/wordpress/donate-now/ (scroll down to the “James Fitzpatrick YASC” donation button). Aloha,

I am James Fitzpatrick. I am a member of St. Elizabeth’s Church, Honolulu. I have been accepted into the Young Adult Service Corp (YASC) of the Episcopal Church. The Young Adult Service Corps is a ministry for those interested in exploring their faith in new ways by living and serving in communities around the Anglican Com-munion. YASC offers young adults a unique opportunity to be an active part of what God is doing in the world. Also, YASC videos are available at www.episcopalchurch.org/yasc and the video about Episcopal Volunteers in Mis-sion is available at www.episcopalchurch.org/missionaries.

King St. Honolulu, HI 96817-5791

Or payments can be made through the Parish website at http://stelizabeth720.org/wordpress/donate-now/ (scroll down to the “James Fitzpatrick YASC” donation button).

If you're needing help with how to pray, you may want to try this method, based on the Ignatian Prayer of Examen and reflection.

The Prayer Process:

Step 1: Gratitude: Begin by thanking God in a personal dialogue for whatever you are most grateful for today.

Step 2: Awareness: Revisit the times in the past twenty-four hours when you were and were not the-best-version-of-yourself. Talk to God about these situations and what you learned from them.

Step 3: Significant Moments: Identify something you experienced today and ex-plore what God might be trying to say to you through that event (or person).

Step 4: Peace: Ask God to forgive you for any wrong you have committed (against yourself, another person, or him) and to fill you with a deep and abiding peace.

Step 5: Freedom: Speak with God about how he is inviting you to change your life, so that you can experience the freedom to be the-best-version-of-yourself.

Step 6: Others: Lift up to God anyone you feel called to pray for today asking God to bless and guide them.

Step 7: Finish by praying the Our Father.

“LUNCH BUNCH”

The Daughters of the King chapter at St. Timothy’s invites you to join the

“Lunch Bunch.” This service project benefits all the churches of West Oahu. Having

coordinated two lunches already, there are still two more on the church calendar for July

and October. The premise originally was to give the regional clergy an opportunity to

socialize with church members informally and not be rushed. For everyone, it is an op-

portunity to meet others from all four churches.

The next “Lunch Bunch” is scheduled for Thursday, July 23, at Makino Chaya

Restaurant across from Bed Bath & Beyond in Pearlridge. Look for a coupon for their

lunch buffet in Sunday’s Star-Advertiser restaurant section, so with tax, tip and sharing

expense of clergy, each person’s cost comes to around $15. In order to facilitate seating

arrangements with the restaurant, please be there at 10:45 AM. (doors open at 11:00

AM). If this date isn’t available on your calendar, mark Thursday, October 22. Maybe

the same place; maybe we’ll try something new.

No one is too old or too young to join the “Lunch Bunch.” Pass it on!

HOW TO BEST USE THIS CHART

Step #1 - Check the box above that best represents how much you wanted to regularly give to the Lord’s work at your church.

Step #2 - Compare what you checked on the chart to what you actually gave.

Step #3 - Realize that Scripture teaches that Christian giving is an important part of a person’s spiritual growth and development.

Step #4 - If you have fallen short of your intentions, prayerfully ask yourself the question, “Do I realize it would be a great help to my church if I

considered giving a "catch up" offering (or offerings) to help make up for some of the offerings I didn’ t give?”

Step #5 - Ask yourself the question, “In the future, what can I begin to do to become more faithful in my giving to the Lord’s work at my church?”

Consider this suggestion: whenever you write a deposit into your checkbook, immediately write out a check for the Lord s work. Then you will always be

prepared to faithfully give to the Lord from what He’s given you!

face all of us today. Writing recently in Kosmos, Journal for Global Transformation,

Elisabet said, “...our world is produced in our consciousness - that realities are not fixed sce-

narios in which we grope our way about, but the ever-changing creations we ourselves bring

forth both individually and collectively through our beliefs and actions. We must become

active co-creators of our own reality once we realize we have the power - and the responsi-

bility - to change it intentionally, day by day, even minute by minute.”

is open to everyone. Pot

On Saturday, June 27, 2015, members of St. Nicholas, St. Timothy’s, St. John’s and St. Stephen’s joined together for The

Episcopal Church of West Oahu’s annual Day at Camp Mokule’ia. The morning was spent setting up

camp, getting to know one another better and relaxing. Camp was a day filled with fun; we played

games, Ladder Ball, Washers, Bocce Ball and Basketball. Camp participants swam in the ocean, kay-

aked and saw green sea turtles. For lunch we made our own sandwiches and had a delicious chili pre-

pared by Deacon Steve. We relaxed under the shade of the iron wood trees, painted pictures of the

scenery that surrounded us with Tammy Bruce of Mai Tai’s and Monet and learned to make lauhala

crosses with rosettes from Kala Holden. For dinner, we grilled burgers and hot dogs, followed up by a

camp staple…S’mores. To close camp we joined the Ahe group at Hui Pu for Eucharist lead by Father

Paul Klitzke with assistance from Annalise Castro and Jar Pasalo. We were able to interact with the youth at Hui Pu and share

the experience of camp with them. Mahalo nui loa to Bob and Luella Windisch, Bob and Kala Holden, Deacon Steve, Kevin

and Brandi Shin and the Bruce family for all their efforts in making the day at camp a success!

Feedback:
