CHALKING THE DOORS –––––––––– LA TIZA BENDITA
As we did last year, today we continue a longstanding custom of the Church of blessing chalk on the Feast of the Epiphany, which is used by the faithful to bless their homes by writing an inscription over the door. While reciting certain prayers asking for God’s presence and blessing, the head of the household will write the following inscription on the door’s lintel (the horizontal support at the top of the door):
20 + C + M + B + 19
The numbers indicate the current calendar year. The initials C, M, and B have a double meaning. First, they recall the names of the three Magi – Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar – who entered into the home of the holy family and offered their gifts to the child Jesus. The idea is that, just as they found Jesus in the home of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem, so too we ask that He be found in the very center of our homes throughout the year.
Secondly, the letters stand for a simple petition, made in Latin: Christus Mansionem Benedicat: “May Christ bless [this] home.” Every time we pass under the inscription, it calls to mind the fact that Jesus’ blessing will rest upon our home when we allow it to flow through us, when we cooperate with God’s grace to be instruments of peace, charity, understanding, and forgiveness in the heart of our homes.
Look on this weekend’s bulletin for a rite that can be used by anyone to use blessed chalk on (or around) the Epipha-ny to bless all the homes of our parish.

Rite of Blessing the Home with Blessed
Chalk on Epiphany
Leader: In the name of the Father, + and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen
Using the blessed chalk, the leader marks the lintel of the door with the inscription:
20 + C + M + B + 19
The leader proceeds: The three Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar followed the star of God’s Son who became man two thou-sand and nineteen years ago. May Christ bless our home and remain with us through-out the New Year. All: Amen.
Then the leader offers the following pray-er: Visit, O Lord, this home with the gladness of your presence. Bless all who live or visit here with the gift of your love; and grant that we may manifest your love to each oth-er and to all whose lives we touch. May we grow in grace and in the knowledge and love of you; guide, comfort, and strengthen us in peace, O Lord Jesus Christ, now and forever. All: Amen.
20 + C + M + B + 19
Y sigue: Que tus Santos, Gaspar, Melchor, y
