HEALTHY FUTURE 2015
Safeguarding the Planet is our legacy
We have long recognized the need to sustain natural resources and
care for the planet. In 1987, Johnson & Johnson established our first
environmental goal, aimed at reducing toxic emissions. We have since
set a series of long-term goals across a range of environmental
impacts, measured our progress and met nearly all these goals. With
the launch of Healthy Future 2015, we have defi ned our priorities for
the next fi ve years, added goals in new areas and reaffi rmed ourcommitment to safeguard the planet.
GOAL
Reduce the environmental impacts of our operations
Increase the sustainable design of ourproducts
MEASUREMENT/TARGET
20 percent absolute reduction in facility CO2 emissions.
Increase on-site renewable and cleantechnology energy capacity to
50 megawatts
20 percent decrease in CO2 emissions per kilometer driven
10 percent absolute reduction in water consumption
10 percent absolute reduction in total waste disposal
All new products and packaging are evaluated for sustainability
improvements; 60 achieve Earthward designation.

of the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson. The
4.1 megawatt array of 13,496 solar panels, which track the sun from
east to west, is estimated to generate enough energy to provide 70
percent of the sites annual electricity needs, or roughly the amount
needed to power 600 homes annually. In addition to the Titusville site,Johnson & Johnson has solar power systems planned or completed at
20 sites worldwide, which together represent an installed capacity of
about 13 megawatts, roughly the amount needed to power nearly
2,000 homes annually. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) Green Power Partnership lists the company as the nations
seventh largest purchaser of renewable energy. Johnson & Johnson has
received six Green Power Leadership Awards from the EPA and
Department of Energy since 2002.

Our carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions reporting follows the Greenhouse
Gas Inventory protocol developed by the World Resources Institute and
the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. The protocol
requires that we recalculate historical emissions to reflect acquisitions,
divestitures and mergers, so all data shown on the chart represents
emissions from the same business entities over time. This chart does
not reflect CO2 emissions or sales resulting from the acquisition of
Pfizer Consumer Healthcare.

HEALTHY PEOPLE, HEALTHY LAND
Our Healthy Communities, Healthy Ecosystems partnership with the
World Wildlife Fund (WWF) links healthy environment and the health of
local people. Supporting the health of local communities enables
these communities to sustainably manage the natural resources base
on which they depend, said Katarina Trojnar, corporate relations
officer at WWF.
In many remote places where WWF works, few other organizations are
present, making the WWFs work vital for building awareness of the
links between a healthy environment and the health of the people who
live there. Since 2003, we have supported innovative Healthy
Communities, Healthy Ecosystems projects in ecoregions of the East
Africa, the Congo Basin, and the Eastern Himalayas.
Collaborating in KenyaThe East Africa Marine Ecoregion stretches several hundred miles and
is home to a great diversity of plant and animal life, including some of
the most diverse coral communities in the world. Native villagers live
off the land.
One example of our partnership takes place in Kenyas Kiunga Marine
National Reserve where WWF works to promote health interventions
and improved and expanded health resources, including supporting
efforts in reproductive health, family planning, HIV/AIDS,
immunizations, preventive care, safe drinking water, and sanitation.
The reserve contains coral reefs, sea grass meadows, and mangrove
forests that act as a refuge for marine wildlife. Reserve resources are
threatened, and a further increase in population under current
conditions will make matters worse.
Progress in the Last Year
Over the last year, our partnership with WWF has made significant

advances in promoting environmental conservation by improving
human health. For example, a dispensary clinic for communities in the
reserve was constructed to help improve community health and
encourage local participation in natural resource management. The
dispensary also provides safe drinking water in the reserves mainvillages. Additionally, residents are learning about family planning
options from newly trained health care workers from the Ministry of
Health and Family Health International. Mobile clinics are reaching
villages that have no access to quality health care, and people are
receiving prenatal and postnatal care, immunizations, nutritional
counseling and education about environmental health and
conservation efforts.
Our Healthy Planet
We aspire to be the most environmentally responsible company in the world. Our HealthyPlanet 2010 goals have served as a roadmap to help us get there.
Every five years, the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies sets new long-term goalsthat help us reduce our environmental footprint. In 2006, we introduced: Healthy Planet2010. Like our previous goals, these were ambitious. In developing them, we soughtcounsel from many stakeholders, including government officials, environmental groups, other companies and academic thought leaders. We are confident that our Healthy Planet2010 goals have helped safeguard the health of our planet.
Healthy Planet 2010 includes
Energy UseCarbon Dioxide Reduction
Water Use
Paper and Packaging
Waste Reduction
Product Stewardship
Environmental Literacy
Transparency
Biodiversity Compliance
External Manufacturing
A Measurable DifferenceWe first began setting environmental goals in 1990. Since then, we have reduced waste, water and energy use, raw material and packaging. Nearly all of our manufacturing sitesand research and development facilities have ISO 14001 certification, a standard forstrong environmental management systems.

All our environmental accomplishments reinforce our commitment to Our Credo, whichstates that we must maintain in good order the property we are privileged to use,
protecting the environment and natural resources.
In addition, our environmental improvement projects consistently result in more efficient
manufacturing processes, increased product yields and cost savings.
J & J Environmental partnerships
Partnerships allow us to do more than we ever could on our own.
Ecosystems are fragile. And if we do not protect them, our food
supplies, opportunities for recreation and tourism, and potential
sources of medicines and energy supplies will be jeopardized.
Strong partnerships between Johnson & Johnson, its operating
companies, nonprofit organizations and other conservation groups are
restoring and protecting ecosystems aroundthe world. Below are some
of the organizations we support in an effort to create a healthier world.
World Wildlife Fund (WWF)
The WWF is an international organization dedicated to preservingnature and biological diversity. Johnson & Johnson is a long-timesupporter of the WWF. Since 2003, we have supported HealthyCommunities, Healthy Ecosystems projects around the world.
Harvard Medical School, Center for Health and the Global Environment
Johnson & Johnson supports this centers efforts to expandenvironmental education at medical schools and to promote researchand awareness of the impact of global environmental change onhuman health. We were also involved with a global project co-sponsored by the United Nations Development Program, the UnitedNations Environment Program and the WHO on biodiversity and human
health. The projects culminating book, Sustaining Life: How HumanHealth Depends on Biodiversity, was published recently.
World Resources Institute (WRI)
This international research organization and global think tank focuseson ways to protect the earth and, by doing so, improve peoples lives.Johnson & Johnson is among more than 400 organizations in 50countries that partner with the WRI.

Being transparent
Being transparent means that we are clear, honest and open aboutour environmental programs and performance.

In 2006, we introduced our Healthy Planet 2010 goals. One of thosegoals calls for 100 percent of our manufacturing and research anddevelopment facilities to provide environmental sustainabilityinformation to the public. Currently, 60 percent of facilities havesubmitted information.
Recognitions
