Why English?The study of language and literature lies at the heart of a liberal arts education. The English major at Gallaudet University provides students with:★an understanding of our rich multicultural literary heritage;★advanced skills in reading, writing, critical thinking, and research--skills necessary for the 21st c. workplace;★media and digital literacy;★public and professional writing;★craftsmanship in creative writing;★preparation for a variety of careers,
★ including professional writing and editing, education and out-reach, creative and public writing, content development, communications and dissemination, and writing for multimedia and social media platforms, to name a very few;
★a pipeline to hands-on experiences both on and off campus;★preparation for advanced study in graduate school;★and the opportunity to work with faculty who are published authors in poetry, fiction, personal essay, academic essay, mono-graphs, bilingual ASL-English curriculum development, blogs, con-tent development for public and professional audiences, and so on.

The English Major @Gallaudet
★Through the choice of electives, students who major in English can also specialize in writing or in a specific area of study related to English literature. Courses with “topics to be specified” can be repeated.★Recent special topics courses have included: poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, apocalyptic fiction, Theoretical Harry Potter, literary gothic, sports writing, writing center theory and practice, vampire literature, and Victorian crime literature.
