It is a society for “possibility thinkers”- those who believe their dreams can happen. The society is named after the founder of Morgantown, Colonel Zackquill Morgan. Madera Club | $1,000 - $1,249 In honor of Nicholas and Susannah Madera: The Maderas resided in the Monongalia area as early as 1796. Nicholas became an owner of the Monongalia Gazette, served as the postmaster of Morgantown, and later in his life was a trustee of the village. Dering Club | $1,250 – $1,499 In honor of Henry and Rebecca Dering: The Derings came to Morgantown in 1787 and soon opened a log tavern in the southeast corner of High and Walnut Street. Their second tavern was located across from the town square. He was given a contract, along with George Hite, to construct a new courthouse. McCleery Club | $1,500 - $1,999 In honor of Colonel William and Isabella Stockton McCleery: He arrived in Morgantown between 1783 and 1785. Later, he practiced law and became a local judge. He also represented Monongalia County in the legislature. Isabella, after escaping from the Indian captivity, met Col. McCleery and became a founder of Morgantown. Kerns Club | $2,000 - $2,499 In honor of Michael and Suzanna Kerns: As early as 1772, Michael Kerns was operating a boatyard on Decker’s creek. He oversaw construction of the new courthouse. Because there were few churches in Morgantown, Kerns also built a place of worship for all denominations across Decker’s Creek. Kerns Fort sheltered local citizens during attacks. Hagans Club | $2,500 - $3,499 In honor of Harrison Hagans: He was considered the most outstanding Preston County entrepreneur of his time. He began numerous ventures of benefit to his neighbors, his county, and the surrounding counties. He was instrumental in the building of the four highways in the separation of the state prior to the civil war. Evans Club | $3,500 - $4,999 In honor of Colonel John and Ann Martin Evans: John Evans was born in 1737 near Alexandria, Virginia. He arrived in Morgantown in 1769. His residence was north of the town in Walnut Hill. He attained the rank of Lt. Col. in the Revolutionary war and founded the Monongalia Academy. The community of Evansdale commemorates the family name. Scott Club | $5,000 - $7,499 In honor of David and Judith Scott: He served as a delegate to the Virginia General Assembly, as sheriff of Monongalia County, as a member of the county court as a census taker, and as a captain of the Virginia militia. He made his livelihood by operating a mill on the Monongalia River at the mouth of Scotts Mill Run. Laidley Club | $7,500 - $9,999 In honor of Thomas and Sarah Laidley: Born: Scotland, 1756. Settled in Morgantown around 1783 and operated the town’s first store. He acquired many of the original lots and numerous tracts of land in the surrounding area. In 1937, they established the Community Chest, later known as the United Fund, and finally, since the 1970’s, the United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties. Alexis de Tocqueville Society The Alexis de Tocqueville Society recognizes local philanthropic leaders and volunteer champions around the world who have devoted time, talent, and funds to create long-lasting changes by tackling our communities’ most serious issues. Gifts of $10,000 and above The United Way Tocqueville Society was created to acknowledge and honor those individuals whose leadership and commitment to the common good have been uncommon in its generosity. Gifts of $750 - $999 Giving to the Founder’s Society pays tribute to Clarence Roby, the first Campaign Chair in 1934 and Charles E. Moore, who served as the first Board President in 1937.
