It is a universal political truth that administrations do not begin to fragment whenthings are going well: it only happens when they go badly, and those who thinkthey know better begin to attack those who manifestly do not. The descent ofBarack Obama's regime, characterised now by factionalism in the DemocraticParty and talk of his being set to emulate Jimmy Carter as a one-termpresident, has been swift and precipitate. It was just 16 months ago thatweeping men and women celebrated his victory over John McCain in theAmerican presidential election. If they weep now, a year and six weeks into hisrule, it is for different reasons.

Despite the efforts of some sections of opinion to talk the place up, America ismired in unhappiness, all the worse for the height from which Obamania hasfallen. The economy remains troublesome. There is growth a good last quartersuggested an annual rate of as high as six per cent, but that figure is probablynot reliable and the latest unemployment figures, last Friday, showed a

levelling off. Yet 15 million Americans, or 9.7 per cent of the workforce, have no job. Many millions more are reduced to working part-time. Whole areas of thecountry, notably in the north and on the eastern seaboard, are industrialwastelands. The once mighty motor city of Detroit appears slowly to be beingabandoned, becoming a Jurassic Park of the mid-20th century; unemploymentamong black people in Mr Obama's own city of Chicago is estimated atbetween 20 and 25 per cent. One senior black politician a Democrat and asupporter of the President told me of the wrath in his community that a blackpresident appeared to be unable to solve the economic problem among his ownpeople. Cities in the east such as Newark and Baltimore now have drug-dealingas their principal commercial activity: The Wire is only just fictional.

Last Thursday the House of Representatives passeda jobs Bill, costing $15 billion, which would give taxbreaks to firms hiring new staff and, through statesponsorship of construction projects, createthousands of jobs too. The Senate is trying toapprove a Bill that would provide a further $150 billionof tax incentives to employers. Yet there is a senseof desperation in the Administration, a sense thatnothing can be as efficacious at the moment as asticking plaster. Edward B Montgomery, deputylabour secretary in the Clinton administration, now

spends his time on day trips to decaying towns thatused to have a car industry, not so much advisingthem on how to do something else as facilitatingthose communities' access to federal funds. For aland without a welfare state, America starts to do aneffective impersonation of a country with one. Thismassive state spending gives rise to accusations byRepublicans, and people too angry even to beRepublicans, that America is now controlled by"Leftists" and being turned into a socialist state.

"Obama's big problem," a senior Democrat told me, "is that four times as manypeople watch Fox News as watch CNN." The Fox network is a remarkablecultural phenomenon which almost shocks those of us from a country where a

technical rule of impartiality is applied in the broadcast media. With little rest, itpours out rage 24 hours a day: its message is of the construction of thesocialist state, the hijacking of America by "progressives" who now dominateinstitutions, the indoctrination of children, the undermining of religion and theexpropriation of public money for these nefarious projects. The public loves it,and it is manifestly stirring up political activism against Mr Obama, and alsoagainst those in the Republican Party who are not deemed conservatives. However, it is arguable whether the now-reorganising Right is half as effective inits assault on the President as some of Mr Obama's own party are.

Mr Obama benefited in his campaign from an idiotic level of idolatry, in whichmost of the media participated with an astonishing suspension of cynicism. Thesound of the squealing of brakes is now audible all over the American press; butthe attack is being directed not at the leader himself, but at those around him.

There was much unconditional love a year or so ago of Rahm Emanuel, MrObama's Chief of Staff; oleaginous profiles of this Chicago political hack, aveteran of that unlovely team that polluted the Clinton White House, appeared inotherwise respectable journals, praising the combination of his religiousdevotion, his family-man image, his ruthless operating technique and hiscommand of the vocabulary of profanity. Now, supporters of the President areblaming Mr Emanuel for the failure of the Obama project, not least for hisinability to construct a deal on health care.

This went down badly with friends of Mr Emanuel, notably with Mr Emanuelhimself. His partisans, apparently taking dictation from him, have fillednewspaper columns and blogs with uplifting accounts of the Wonder of Rahm:as one of them put it, "Emanuel is the only person preventing Obama frombecoming Jimmy Carter". They attack other Obama "sycophants", such asDavid Axelrod, his campaign guru, and Valerie Jarret, a long-time friend of Mrs

Obama and a fixer from the office of Mayor Daley of Chicago who now manages or tries to manage the President's image. These "sycophants" have, theyargue, tried to keep the President above politics, letting Congress run away withthe agenda, and gainsaying Mr Emanuel's advice to Mr Obama to get toughwith his internal opponents. This nave act of manipulation has brought its owncounter-counterattack, with an anti-Emanuel pundit drawing a comparison withour own Prime Minister and ridiculing the idea that Mr Obama should startbullying people too.

The root of the problem seems to be the management of expectations. Themagnificent campaign created the notion that Mr Obama could walk on water.Oddly enough, he can't. That was more Mr Axelrod's fault than Mr Emanuel's.And, to be fair to Mr Emanuel, any advice he has been giving the President toimpose his will on Congress is probably well founded. The $783 billion stimulus

package of a year ago was used to further the re-election prospects of manycongressmen, not to do good for the country. America's politics remain corrupt, populated by nonentities whose main concern once elected is to stay elected;it seems to be the same the whole world over. Even this self-interested use ofthe stimulus package appears to have failed, however. Every day, it seems, another Democrat congressman announces that he will not be fighting the mid-term elections scheduled for November 2. The health care Bill, apparently sohumane in intent, is being "scrubbed" (to use the terminology of oneRepublican) by its opponents, to the joy of millions of middle Americans whosee it as a means to waste more public money and entrench socialism. For themoment, this is a country vibrant with anger.

A thrashing of the Democrats in the mid-terms would not necessarily be thebeginning of the end for Mr Obama: Bill Clinton was re-elected two years afterthe Republicans swept the House and the Senate in November 1994. But MrClinton was an operator in a way Mr Obama patently is not. His lack ofexperience, his dependence on rhetoric rather than action, his disconnectionfrom the lives of many millions of Americans all handicap him heavily. It is notabout whose advice he is taking: it is about him grasping what is wrong withAmerica, and finding the will to put it right. That wasted first year, however, isanother boulder hanging from his neck: what is wrong needs time to put right. The country's multi-trillion dollar debt is barely being addressed; and a countryengaged in costly foreign wars has a President who seems obsessed withanything but foreign policy as a disregarded Britain is beginning to realise.

There are lessons from the stumbling of Mr Obama for our own country as weapproach a general election. Vacuous promises of change are hostages tofortune if they cannot be delivered upon to improve the living conditions of apeople. The slickness of campaigning that comes from a combination of heavyfunding and public relations expertise does not inevitably translate into an abilityto govern. There is no point a nation's having the audacity of hope unless it alsohas the sophistication and the will to turn it into action. As things stand, BarackObama and America under his leadership do not .

I think America needs a bluecollar candidate this time. One who knows what it is liketo suffer the days in and outs of the new American Life. One that will not put up withall the B.S. that seems to surround the whitehouse. One who can visualize the ideasof creating jobs, one that is not reluctant to fine the hell out of major companies who

profit 160 billion dollars a year. One who see's the actual problems that we as anation face. One who believes in NOT fighting a pointless war, draining more andmore from the economy and killing the soldiers who are fighting someon elses war.One that will not keep governmental secrets from the nations population. One to putthe power into the hands of where it belongs, that is you and I! We as a nation haveabsolutely no say so any longer about anything. If I was elected President, I would fixall these problems from day ONE, and not just blow smoke up my citizens asses.Lets face it, there is only one reason that hitler, oops, I meant Obama, won thePresidency, and we will leave it at that. I am a blue collar nobody, but I have made asuccess in looking out for other people, rather it be helping tha, gain revenue, managing a budget, building up from being in the hole. I Obama's socialist program get's voted in, you can expect that there will be anexodus of doctors out of the U.S. Simple math. The place the world will go for woldclass medical attention will be India, if the flawed Obama/Pelosi/Reid governmenthealthcare bill gets passed. Bigger government is not the answer to anything, it isthe problem! Big government is what stand in the way of economic growth in the U.S.

Ballack Obama has never actually run anything in his life. Anyone with an ounce ofexecutive experience would not have abdictated the formulation of the stimulouspackage or healthcare reform to a congressional clique. That is elementary.Changing his inner circle od advisors and enforcers will change nothing. It isObama himself is the problem. We have an utterly incompetent US President.

Sure, Fox News dominates because they tell the truth while the rest of network newsfawns over Obama and the liberal left. There is a market for truth and Fox's successtells us that most Americans do not want a socialistic state, and believe in ourConstitution. Here's another fact: one of the few newspapers (maybe the only major one) whosecirculation is actually going up is The Wall Street Journal. Check out their dailyeditorials and you'll learn why The WSJ is gaining while most newspapers aresliding into oblivion. Simply put, it the same reason Fox is successful.

Barak Obama is a complete disaster to common, ordinary, upright citizens. Hisparadigm is strangely warped and twisted by those he associated with. Herepudiates free market capitalism, the goose that laid the golden egg for America. Ifthat weren't enough, he wants to spread the wealth of honest, hard workingAmericans around to those who never earned it and do not deserve it simplybecause he believes that America has mistreated particular classes of people in thepast and he believes it is his time to right the wrongs that have been done. His ethoswas shaped by Jeremiah Wright, the fire brand American hater whose theology isneither Christian nor American.

Cantillon - are you kidding me? Obama has blamed the Bush administration atnearly every turn since the day his swearing in was bungled. The whole thrust of hisadministration has been to push the progressive agenda without a shred ofmeaningful involvement from across the aisle. Until recently, when the election of Mr.Brown in MA forced him to at least publicly display a gesture of bipartisanship.

Conservatives don't blame Obama for the problems he inherited -- they have been inthe making for decades with help from hundreds of government and big businessleaders. But we sure do blame Obama (and Congress) for using the current "crisis"to recklessly and arrogantly push through legislation and bailout spending that is theexact opposite of what needs to be done to restore economic freedom, strength andsanity to our country.

The only reason Obama won was because he ran against a horrible candidate, andhe lied his ass off to the American people. People should have seen that this wasgoing to be a hugly partisan administration as soon as Obama put Joe Biden on theticket, and added Rahm Emanuel, (the spawn of Satan,) to his staff. He's appiontedtzar after tzar with questionable associations and radical political views. More people watched Fox in 2008 too. If Fox News is the problem, Obama wouldn'thave been elected.

One problem is Obama's lack of experience. His organizing skills are about usingthe threat of the race card to avoid confrontation and gain more entitlements. Similarattempts to rally Americans against Wall Street or Insurance Companies don't work.

The other problems documented in this article are on the right track. Republicansmade these same arguments during the election.

Conservative voter apathy, bigbusiness greed, and shear political ignorance paved the way for their victory. Nowthese low life (Rham Emanuel) Democrat scum bags (Obama,Pelosi,Reed) are onthe run. The great silent majority has awakened, or maybe not? Let us not forget theR.H.I.N.O's and other Republican moderates that were asleep at the wheel, whileour country was being hijacked by Bush, Clinton, and Bush. Not to mention over 20years of a totaly ineffective Congress and House. Obama and his crew didn't do thisto us overnight, let's not forget that, not ever. You will find, with little suprise, that Democrat leftistsand unions have controlled the vast majority of places like Detroit. Overspending, overtaxation, overregulation and unionization have all killed the golden geese, and ifthe American person (not people) does not wake up soon, Detroit will be a sign ofthings to come for us all.

Mr. Heffer is spot on for most of his observations; the one exception being hischaracterization of Fox News. The reason that Fox News is so wildly popular isprecisely because most of the time it presents a viewpoint consistent with that of asignificant number of TV news-watching Americans. Most of us can sense whenwe're being "spun", and the old networks - ABC,CBS,NBC,PBS,CNN, and MSNBChave engaged in blatant leftist spinning for years. Unless you have unusually shortmemory, Fox news analysts were fairly tough on Pres. People claim the usual line-up is fair and only guys like Hannity and Beck beingthe far right, that's not what I see. Fox & Friends in the morning leans right, then it'sdecent until the afternoon, when the top "draws" come in. A truly "impartial" newssource would have Beck and Olbermann on one after the other. Or on the sameshow, even. THAT is impartial as both are radical in their beliefs.

As far as Obama goes, I consider him weak. Very weak. The one thing I supported inhim was the "Public Option," and yet now that's practically off the table becauseDemocrats and Obama gave up on it once it got flak in Congress. The guy hasn'tstood his ground on beliefs until now, and now seems too late. The Republicansare gaining steam with the outrage of the public. By and large, Obama is getting a lotof flak, but most is deserved, unlike the praise he got during the election.

The mention of Fox News is correct. I know many who refuse to watch any of thenetwork's programming solely because of what seems to be an open campaign to

What are truly concerning are the apparent willingness of many US citizens to speakout with loud voices and repeat the same slurs and claims, and the fact that they doseem to have the loudest voice of all in the country today.

Anyone who speaks out against them for any reason (even if to point out the obviouserror in some of their wilder claims) is shouted down almost rabidly.

The future looks bleak for freedom, democracy, and honesty in the land that holdsitself up as a leading example of those things.

Added to which, it speaks volumes about the increasing willingness - or is it desire?- of people to believe anything about anybody provided that it's told to them withstrong emotions, use of the word "patriot" and a waving flag.

There is a serious issue here, and it's a matter of who individuals are as opposed tothe state. Commenter MacAnou said it well, that we are (theoretically) self-ruled asAmericans, that a president is not a ruler. This is a struggle for the Europeanmindset (not all, mind you, but the standard). Self-rule is the very purpose of ourConstitution, which is unique in its design as a largely immovable, immutablefoundation of government. Citizens' rights aren't given by the Constitution, butprotected by them. It does not empower government, but limits it. True, it has longbeen ignored in large part, but here's the thing: A few comments here suggest thatAmericans are barbarian for not being a people in "harmony" with a gently totalitarianstate. It's funny, but it's not individual freedom that is barbaric. No, ratherauthoritarian government is, even if it says, "Now don't you fuss, sweetie" while it tiesyou up and locks you in a closet.

    behind the scenes?

If George W. Bush had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to take Laura Bushto a play in NYC, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had reduced your retirement plan's holdings of GM stock by 90%and given the unions a majority stake in GM, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had made a joke at the expense of the Special Olympics, wouldyou have approved?

If George W. Bush had given Gordon Brown a set of inexpensive and incorrectlyformatted DVDs, when Gordon Brown had given him a thoughtful and historicallysignificant gift, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had given the Queen of England an iPod containing videos of hisspeeches, would you have thought this embarrassingly narcissistic and tacky?

If George W. Bush had bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia, would you haveapproved?

If George W. Bush had visited Austria and made reference to the non-existent"Austrian language," would you have brushed it off as a minor slip?

If George W. Bush had filled his cabinet and circle of advisers with people whocannot seem to keep current in their income taxes, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had been so Spanish illiterate as to refer to "Cinco de Cuatro" in

front of the Mexican ambassador when it was the 5th of May (Cinco de Mayo), andcontinued to flub it when he tried again, would you have winced in embarrassment?

If George W. Bush had misspelled the word "advice" would you have hammered himfor it for years like Dan Quayle and potatoe as proof of what a dunce he is?

If George W. Bush had burned 9,000 gallons of jet fuel to go plant a single tree onEarth Day, would you have concluded he's a hypocrite?

If George W. Bush's administration had okayed Air Force One flying low over millionsof people followed by a jet fighter in downtown Manhattan causing widespreadpanic, would you have wondered whether they actually get what happened on 9-11?

If George W. Bush had failed to send relief aid to flood victims throughout the

Midwest with more people killed or made homeless than in New Orleans, would youhave made into a major ongoing political issue with claims of racism andincompetence?

If George W. Bush had created the positions of 32 or more Czars who report directlyto him, bypassing the House and Senate on much of what is happening in America, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had ordered the firing of the CEO of a major corporation, eventhough he had no constitutional authority to do so, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had proposed to double the national debt, which had taken morethan two centuries to accumulate, in one year, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had then proposed to double the debt again within 10 years, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had spent more than all the Presidents combined since GeorgeWashington, would you have approved?

So, tell me again, what is it about Obama that makes him so brilliant andimpressive? Can't think of anything? Don't worry. He's done all this in a short periodof time -- so you'll have 3 years to come up with an answer.

Do you miss George Bush yet?

As a conservative, I agree Obama has failed. I also think the backlash from FoxNews and the Tea Party movement lacks credibility. Here are people who couldn't

care less about spending and big government when Bush and Republican wererunning the show. America has become unsustainable and lacks the ability tochange policy or try new ideas.

Most conservatives seem to blame government for all the issues we face. The realityis government in conjunction with corporations and voter apathy have placed us inthis mess. Policies that outsourced our manufacturing base and removed commonsense financial regulations have taken a massive toll on our society and oureconomy.

Fox News is an exercise of majoring in minors. The search for and exploitation of thenegative. It offers plenty of rage but little as far a solutions. If you can actually sitthrough an hour of without being sick your intelligence should be questioned.

Obama's ideas may not be the answer however, the lack of ideas from the right inthe US gives me absolutely no confidence that we can effectively solve the problemswe face today.

The last point I want to make is that our country has become so partisan itresembles an English football match. "Our side is the best" is just chanted over andover again regardless of the facts. Politics have become sport here and havecompletely removed any sense of honesty or commitment to making governmentwork for the people. The 24 hour news cycle, partisan blogs, etc. have fueled thisinferno to the point where no one can figure out what is real and what is rhetoric.

The fact that Bill Clinton is still considered the best prsident by the majority of thepeople in the U.S., and the fact that President Obama would easily defeat "W" in anelection gives me hope for the U.S. We may beat this Republican recession andpass health care reform yet.

As an American and a Conservative, I applaud your observation that Obama sradical, leftist policies are antithetical to the core values of most Americans and thebasis forthe populist backlash that have sent his approval ratings down the toilet. At the sametime, allow me to react with utter disbelief that you choose to assign the popularity of

FOX news to mere partisan theatre, to do so ignores that FOX news best reflects thevalues of its paying consumers, most of whom agree with your argument that theleftist policies of this President have run afoul of the values that have made Americathe world s engine of economic growth, innovation, stability, productivity andphilanthropy by embracing small government, low taxes, individual freedom and astrong national defense

If partisan theater drove ratings by influencing core values as you suggest, thenMSNBC - which is owned by corporate giant GE and whose unabashed lobbying ofthe Obama administration undermines the very legitimacy of their news subsidiary -spews the most vile political hate speech on cable news and would, using yourlogic, match FOX viewer per bloodthirsty, partisan viewer. It goes without saying, andwatching for that matter, that MSNBC often fails to beat evening gossip talk shows. As free citizens who are allowed to imbibe in a myriad of privately owned newsofferings, we vote with our ratings. In a free market where government does not ownthe media, the news provider that can best reflect the views of the largest audiencewins. Overwhelmingly, the voters have spoken and we choose FOX because it mostclosely matches our political beliefs and values.

Perhaps the bigger story is how Obama, a man with such obvious radical personalassociations - he did kick start his campaign from the home of a unrepentant, domestic terrorist - was given a pass on what are radical, leftist ideological views. What was seen as an advance in race relations, his election could, arguably, beseen as a step back, after all, we failed to realize Dr. Martin Luther King's dream andmissed the opportunity to gauge the man by the content of his character.

stoking up the anti Obama feeling in the country resulting in his failures to date. Ohcontrer my friend. Please remember it is his party that has the balance of power inCongress and it is only through bumbling within his own party that this result hasbeen produced. The noble opposition has cooperated with the refusal, but this ispurely a failure of one party with all the votes failing to compromise its way tosuccess. If he goes down as a one term president, he like Jimmie Carter will be textbook examples of what happens when narcissism meets idealism.

If any of the trillions Obama and Dems have spent worked this article wouldn't exist. The anger in the US has nothing to do with Fox News and everything to do with thedishonesty and incompetence of Obama and the Democrat leadership.Everything Obama does enriches his wealthy pals and hurts small businessmen, ranchers and farmers. It matters little who is the President of the United States. The present crisis is acrisis of the debt-based, fiat money system managed by fractional-reserve banks

worldwide. We have created a monster and shouldn't be too surprised that ourclever offspring is like Chucky on steroids.

Strike at the root and return to a gold-backed currency. Require that loans only arisefrom previous savings, andnot fractional-reserve flim-flam. It doesn't take rocketscience to understand the problem of fraud and dishonesty among the moneychangers...even Jesus was driven to distraction by the greediness of these guys.

Yes, please keep trying to deflect BHO's problems by blaming it on the previousadministration and Foxnews, that will go well with those with whom you disagree.Uh, hello, the financial crisis was caused by issuing mortgages to those who cannotpay them back, at the behest of Fanny May and Freddie Mac, both pressured byprogressive politics to give loans to the under financed and irresponsible. Ouranswer to that crisis is to print more money and just give it away? PresidentObama's current popularity is of his own making, with his party's help. MostAmericans don't want a free ride, instead they want the freedom of self-responsibilityand self-determination. If you really wanted to understand the economic issue, takea look at the Community Re-Investment act or the "Fair Housing" act. Both led to thispredicament, not conservative views (GWB wasn't a real fiscal conservative either).

reform health care, reform the financial system, increase taxes, and add regulations, all with the intention of making the United States a better and stronger country.

Yet, as a business, trying to understand which of these proposals might becomelaw, what their impact might be on business prospects and competition, and whatadditional costs they might impose creates a great deal of uncertainty. It has ledmany management teams and boards to spend inordinate time trying to determinewhich investments we should make, defer, or cancel and which jobs to create, maintain, or eliminate.

The removal of this uncertainty and the constant drumbeat of new threats againstvarious businesses would go a long way to allowing American entrepreneurialenergy to be unleashed.

A HUGE responsibility for this mess lies at the feet of the American press. Theirdemonstration of "an idiotic level of idolatry" is what has driven the popularity of FoxNews. Even those clinging to guns and religion know when they're not being told thewhole truth.

The problem is negroes promoted on the sole basis of the colour of their skin: it'strue in business and government in the USA - ditto for women - women have beenpromoted to ever higher positions but have never produced anything innovative orprofitable. This is the true cause of the decline of America.

"The Fox network is a remarkable cultural phenomenon which almost shocks thoseof us from a country where a technical rule of impartiality is applied in the broadcastmedia. With little rest, it pours out rage 24 hours a day..."

Stating that Fox News pours out rage is not impartial (or even true). The word"impartiality" in English translates as "leftwing views only" in American.

amazing what happens when an article gets linked to the drudge report. You get

comments from the worst of America. The ones that eat, sleep and drink Fox News. They think their getting something fair and balanced but it's the most biased News inthis country. Not only do these people use Fox for News but they seem to get theirhistory lessons from it too. Obviousl most of these people never bother to readbooks by historians or paid attention in school. America is as divided as it was 160years ago. Time to either split in two or have an all out war.

I thank God for Fox News every day, if it were not for Fox the dissemination ofinformation in this country would be akin to that of N. Korea or China where thegovernment completely controls the message and therefore manipulates reality to fit

their own ideology. Comrade Obama was elected because he was supported by afawning liberal media who deliberately refused to vet him during the primariesdespite numerous question marks about his past and his radical associations.Even now, a year after Obama's assault on the US Constitution, on our f reedoms, our wallets, capitalism and our military they still cover for this enemy of all thingsAmerican. No terrorist in the world is more dangerous to the US than our currentPresident and his democratic Congress. A house cleaning of our enemies iscoming soon like a Spring rain, you can count on it!
