•The command to “totally destroy everything,” includingwomen and children, presents a difficultmoral and theologicalproblem for themodern reader. Shortly after leaving Egypt, the Israelites “weary andworn out” were attacked by theAmalekites (Exodus 17:8–16).AfterGodgrantedhis people victory, he promised to completely destroy theAmalekitesfromthefaceof theearth(seealsoDeuteronomy25:17–18).Now, throughSaul,Goddetermines tocarryouthis threat.Youmay want to mention three reasons for such a command. First, Israel was functioning as an instrument of God’sjudgmentonawicked, utterlysinfulculture.Second,Israelneededtoeliminateallformsoftemptationthatmightcorruptandprevent themfrombeingGod’schosen instrument in theworld.Thisdrasticactionwasneeded tomaintainholiness(Deuteronomy7:1–6;20:16–18).Finally,inHebrewthephrase“totallydestroy”means“todevotetoYahweh.”Thespoils,then,weresurrenderedanddedicatedtoGodandwereinsomewayasacrificetoGod.
