New school year brings great expectations Edgewood ISD students returned to class on Monday, August 26, 2013, while teachers and school staff returned on Monday, August 19, 2013 to an energizing convocation. Fifteen hundred staff were in attendance at the Edgewood Academy Theatre. The annual Convocation held for teachers and staff was held on their first day back. Staff celebrated this year’s theme: A World-Class Education!” The schools were prepared for this year’s annual spirit contest. Each campus was given time to prepare a skit to promote

the new school year. This year’s winner was Loma Park Elementary. The school received the district spirit award trophy to be posted at the for the school’s front office for the school 2013-2014 school year. Ten campuses returned to meet new campus principals. Lilly Benavides will oversee the Stafford Head Start Program. Benavides is a graduate of Edgewood HS. Walter Price Allen was appointed principal at Lyndon B. Johnson ES. Allen has 17 years in education. He has served as an elementary teacher, an assistant principal and principal at various school districts. Allen is

excited about coming to Edgewood. Georgia Neuman is the new principal at Franklin D. Roosevelt ES. Neuman has 17 years in education and nine were in administration. Nicole Cannon is the newly appointed

The Edgewood ISD School Board of Trustees meets once a month on the third Tuesday of the month. The school board meets in regular session then proceeds to closed session (if needed). 2013-2014 Budget and Tax Rate approved Trustees approved the 2013-2014 District budget and accepted the certified appraisal roll for tax year 2013, thereby approving the tax rate. The Board approved a budget of $110,319,345. The new budget is 2 percent higher than the previous budget, but part of the increase was the across the-board salary raises. The budget objects of Contracted Services, Supplies, and Capital Projects declined in the new budget compared with the previous budget. The 2013-2014 tax rate is slightly lower than last year’s. The new tax rate is $1.382600, compared with the previous tax rate of $1.398000. A lower tax rate was possible due in part to increased property values on the tax rolls, said Eddie Ramirez, Chief Finance and Operations Officer. Edgewood ISD also refinanced its debt service at a lower payment. Acting in response to a Texas district court decision that declared the state’s education finance system unconstitutional, the Texas Legislature returned nearly $4 billion to Texas schools. Edgewood ISD’s restored state funding was approximately $3.5 million. The Board also approved the final amended budget for 2012-2013. The final amended budget was $107,696,811. The 2012-2013 budget included several capital improvement projects - parking lot improvements at Gardendale, LBJ and Winston elementary schools; new buses and police vehicles; Food Service freezer truck; Cosmetology and Auto Tech facility improvements; renovations at the baseball and softball fields; Emma Frey renovations; Mata Stadium drainage and track resurfacing.

Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year. We are excited and energized about the new school year, which began August 26. Opening a new school year enforces my belief that we have wonderful opportunities to make a difference in the lives of our students. Special thanks goes to our employees who worked diligently to complete preparations and summer cleaning for the start of school. Because of these extra efforts, we were ready for the first day of class.

We are focused on providing the highest level of learning for every student, in every classroom, at every school. From the Board room to the classroom, our mission is to provide a solid foundation with a World-Class Education. We stand at the start of a new school year, a fresh beginning filled with potential and promise. Edgewood ISD is beginning the school year with among the highest starting teacher salaries in Bexar County. We appreciate the Board of Trustees approving the District Administration’s recommended pay scale for 2013-2014. With the Board’s approval of the new pay scale, we are determined to recruit and retain the most qualified staff to serve our students and community.In all of my years as an educator, this school year was one of the best starts ever. I give credit to the employees who work behind the scenes and throughout the year to make certain everything was in place for the first day of school. The first week of school was exciting. World-renowned singer Gloria Estefan and her family visited Winston ES. Ms. Estefan was in San Antonio for a concert. Ms. Estefan attended Winston in 1st grade and established a lifelong relationship with her teacher, Dorothy Collins. The love and admiration between Ms. Estefan and Ms. Collins was obvious. As we go about our days working with students and colleagues, our teachers and staff can be positive role models - believing, encouraging, challenging, correcting - and being true leaders. The Memorial HS community was ecstatic when the Minutemen varsity football team won its first football game in a couple of years. The team, under the leadership of Head Coach Alex Guerra, has worked extremely hard, focused on strength and conditioning, and earned this victory. I see great things for Edgewood ISD in 2013-2014. We have made many improvements on facilities, including parking lot improvements at Gardendale, LBJ and Winston elementary schools; new buses and police vehicles; Food Service freezer truck; Cosmetology and Auto Tech facility improvements; renovations at the baseball and softball fields; Emma Frey renovations; and Mata Stadium drainage and track resurfacing. Mary Inco, former principal at LB Johnson ES, is the new principal at Brentwood Middle School. Inco has been a principal in Edgewood ISD for five years and has been in education for 24 years in various capacities. Pamela Reece, former principal at Roosevelt ES, is the new principal at Gus Garcia MS. Reece has been in education for 26 years.

Michael Rodriguez, previously served as principal at Elizabeth T. Wrenn MS, will be the new principal at Memorial HS. Rodriguez has been a principal for 16 years. He has served in Edgewood schools in various capacities as well as principal at LB Johnson ES. Dr. Rose Narvaez is the new T-STEM program director. She is not new to Edgewood ISD. Narvaez has served as a a secondary science teacher at Kennedy High School, distict science specialist and has been in Edgewood for 34 years. Parent Engagement Coordinator, Melissa Bombella, has been in the district 21 years. She worked as reading lab assistant, counseling department assistant and most recently served as the parent educator at Memorial HS. Bombella is a 1981 graduate of Memorial HS.

After-School Program for elementaries Trustees approved an agreement renewal with Greater San Antonio After-School All-Stars to provide an after-school program at nine elementary campuses. The after-school program is available to students attending Cisneros, Gonzalez, Las Palmas, Johnson, Loma Park, Perales, Roosevelt, Stafford, and Winston. The program will provide enrichment, recreational and educational opportunities, homework and tutorial assistance, and a safe place for students to socialize and interact.

School board approves school supplies and backpacks for students for 2013-2014 Students at Loma Park Elementary School in the Edgewood School District received backpacks along with school supplies. More than 850 students at Loma Park, as well as students throughout the school district, spent the morning unpacking and preparing their supplies and books for a new school year. Gloria Martinez, principal of Loma Park ES, said, “Students are ready to begin the new school year without the worry of not having school supplies.” Mesh backpacks with the district logo were provided for all students. Students received pens, paper, highlighters, folders, journal, and a 3-inch binder. “Parents can focus on other needs for their children,” Martinez added. The Edgewood ISD Board of Trustees approved the purchase of school supplies and backpacks for all students in kindergarten through 12th grade for the start of the 2013-2014 school year. This is the second consecutive year the District has provided the grade-appropriate school supplies and backpacks for students.

Estefan attended Winston Elementary while her father was in the military and stationed at Lackland AFB in the 1960s. She recalls fond memories about her years attending the Edgewood school and her teacher. At the age of 7, the Cuban-born singer and predominantly Spanish speaking

student knew very little English. Estefan was determined to learn the English language with the help of Collins. Collins was in her early years of teaching when she taught Estefan. “I always treated all my students the same,” Collins said of her teaching. “Each child was unique and special,” she added. Collins began her teaching years at Norman Winston Elementary in 1963. The school was comprised

of mostly military families. Collins spoke briefly to students at the event. She encouraged students to become whatever they wanted to be, adding that they too could someday be like Gloria Estefan or even president of the United States. Collins was honored by People en Español for her outstanding work in education. She retired in 1995 after 35 years of service in the education field. Collins served as a teacher and

principal for various schools in Edgewood. Estefan received a proclamation from the City of San Antonio as honorary Mayor for one day. Councilman Diego Bernal made the presentation and noted the honor is seldom awarded. Estefan performed at the People Festival Musical y Estrellas at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center during her trip to San Antonio.

Michael Scott Menchaca graduated from Memorial High School in 2010. Menchaca joined the military armed forces after graduation. He is currently serving in the U.S. Army as a Specialist at Fort Myers, Virginia. He is a member of the prestigious United States Old Guard Drill Team. “The original drill team,” he stated. Menchaca was at the Metro Center in Washington, D.C. one morning waiting for his train to arrive. Suddenly he noticed a man in a motorized wheel chair falling over the edge of the platform and onto the tracks. Without

Plans are underway for the second annual M o t h e r / D a u g h t e r s Achieving Success conference. The event is set to take place in February 2014. This event is a opportunity for mothers and daughters in our community to become informed on many different topics. A variety of dynamic presentations and inspiring speakers are planned. The topics will focus on healthy living, healthy bodies and healthy choices. Young ladies from 6th grade through 12th grade will be invited to attend the conference with a special woman in their life. The event will be hosted at the Edgewood Fine Arts Academy and Theatre for the Performing Arts. Mark your calendars and be a part of this very special event! The John F. Kennedy HS Class of 1967 was the first group to start classes as freshmen at the new campus in 1963 and graduate four years later. Kennedy HS is celebrating its 50th anniversary during the 2013-2014 school year. Kennedy HS was the first high school in the country named for the 35th President. The Edgewood Board of Trustees approved the school name on September 10, 1962. The school opened its doors in September 1963. Members of the Class of 1967 alumni attended Kennedy’s pep rally August 30 and presented 50th anniversary banners, which will be displayed around campus. The alumni group is planning several anniversary activities throughout the school year. The alumni association holds fund-raisers to provide support to Kennedy students in the form of mentoring opportunities, scholarships and other gifts to enhance education opportunities.

Memorial High School is searching for alumni interested in joining the AMP it up! Team. The Alumni Mentoring Program would assist in mentoring students in various grade levels. Michael Rodriguez, principal of Memorial HS, believes students will benefit from alumni who have had similar life experiences as the students currently attending Memorial. “Students want to relate to others who might have once been in their shoes,” Rodriguez said at a recent meeting. “They want to learn from those who have succeeded and walked the halls of Memorial HS,” he added. Do you have a desire to be involved in a young person’s life? Share your knowlege and expertise in the key to success. Mentoring is an opportunity to teach, learn, and grow together. Most of all be mentor and a friend and make a difference in a student’s life. The Customer Service Award will be presented quarterly to a department or school nominated for the honor. The Edgewood ISD Child Find Initiative is committed to maintaining a system for identifying individuals with disabilities from birth to age 21 who are in need of special education services. Child Find serves Edgewood ISD students, as well as individuals with disabilities attending private schools, day care systems and those residing in nursing facilities.

The Special Education Department works in conjunction with Region 20 Reach and Teach – a free referral and information service.

A major effort of Child Find includes Child Find Initiative and serves children with disabilities locating preschool children from birth to age 3 in need of services. Once identified, these children are referred to Easter Seals - the Early Childhood Intervention program assigned to the district.

Everyone is encouraged to participate in our Child Find efforts by making referrals. Early detection provides children with the greatest opportunities for a productive and successful educational experience. For information, contact, Child Find Coordinator, 444-8120.

El programa Child Find tiene como objetivo remitir a las personas con discapacidad de hasta 21 años a un programa de educación especial diseñado para atender sus necesidades. If your family lives in any of the following situations: in a shelter, motel, vehicle, or campground; on the street; in an abandoned building, trailer, or other inadequate accommodations; or doubled up with-friends or relatives because you cannot find or afford housing, your preschool-aged and school-aged children have certain rights or protections under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act. Your children have the right to:• Go to school, no matter where you live or how long you have lived there. They must be given access to the same public education, including preschool education, provided to other children.• Continue in the school they attended before you became homeless or the school they last attended, if that is your choice and is feasible. If a school sends your child to a school other than the one you request, the school must provide you with a written explanation and offer you the right to appeal the decision.• Receive transportation to the school they attended before your family became homeless or the school they last attended, if you or a guardian request such transportation.• Attend a school and participate in school programs with children who are not homeless. Children cannot be separated from the regular school program because they are homeless.• Enroll in school without giving a permanent address. Schools cannot require proof of residency that might prevent or delay school enrollment.• Enroll and attend classes while the school arranges for the transfer of school and immunization records or any other documents required for enrollment.• Enroll and attend classes in the school of your choice even while the school and you seek to resolve a dispute over enrolling your children.• Receive the same special programs and services, if needed, as provided to all other children.• Receive transportation to school and to school programs. When you move, you should do the following:• Contact the school district’s local liaison for homeless education (see phone number below) for help in enrolling your child in a new school or arranging for your child to continue in his or her former school, (or, someone at a shelter, social services office, or the school can direct you to the person you need-to contact.)• Contact the school and provide any information you think will assist the teachers in helping your child adjust to new circumstances. • Ask the local liaison for homeless education, the shelter provider, or a social worker for assistance with clothing and supplies, if needed. If you need further assistance, call the National Center for Homeless Education at the toll-free Helpline number: 1-800-308-2145 or contact the EISD coordinator Reynae Herrera at 444-7750.

Edgewood ISD is collecting historical items including photos, newspaper clippings, yearbooks, band uniforms and pre-recorded programs about the school district. Information and items collected will serve to fill a museum of Edgewood ISD history.

The museum will be available to anyone interested in learning about the struggles and challenges Edgewood has faced over the years, from the walkout of 1968 to the Rodriguez vs. San Antonio ISD, to the Edgewood vs. Kirby, and the construction of new schools.
