The 2008 Detroit Regional Business Attraction and Expansion

Successes Report contains documented information submitted by

the Economic Development Coalition of Southeast Michigan. The

coalition is comprised of 13 economic development agencies in

the region and works to promote regional solutions that accelerate

economic growth.

The enclosed report outlines the collective successes of each member

over the past year, including the project name, location, industry,

jobs retained, new jobs and total invested dollars. In addition, the

region’s business accelerators provide significant resources to support

business development. Descriptions of each business accelerator

along with 2008 successes are highlighted on Page 8.

This report is a summary of accomplishments as reported by the

coalition and is not intended to be a comprehensive detailing of

every project in the region.

Ann Arbor SPARK is a public-private partnership whose mission is to advance innovation-based economic development in the greater Ann Arbor region. Members represent the area’s university, business, government, entrepreneurial, and community leaders. SPARK helps businesses shorten the time required to attract capital, customers, or other resources, in addition to providing intensive one-on-one coaching, business-critical introductions, and funding and mentors to help. By attracting and effectively deploying talent, investment, and other resources, Ann Arbor SPARK helps to accelerate the growth of innovation-focused companies and of jobs in the area.

NextEnergy is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization founded to enable the commercialization of energy technologies that positively contrib-ute to economic competitiveness, energy security, and the environ-ment. The Center’s initial charge was to implement an economic development strategy for the State of Michigan to accelerate research, development and manufacturing of Alternative Energy Technologies (AET) to advance the Alternative Energy Technology (AET) industry. The NextEnergy Center is the Michigan headquarters of NextEnergy, a 45,000 sq. ft. business convergence facility located in TechTown (Detroit’s Entrepreneurial High-Tech Village), and includes a mi-crogrid power pavilion that enables AET system integration through a world-class test and validation platform, and an alternative fuel testing platform for advancing the development and application of hydrogen, natural gas, synthetic and biofuels.

Established in 2003, the mission of the Automation Alley Business Accelerator is to leverage business, educators and government to help entrepreneurs throughout Southeast Michigan bring new technolo-gies to market quicker and more efficiently. Assistance includes pre-seed and commercialization funding, business plan and strategy development support, global market development assistance, as well as a powerful network of experts and mentors. Investment funding is focused on the following competitive edge technology areas: Life Sciences, Advanced Automotive/ Manufacturing, Materials, Defense and Homeland Security and Alternative Energy.

TechTown is a community of entrepreneurs, investors, mentors, service providers and corporate partners creating an internationally recognized entrepreneurial village in the city of Detroit. It blends high-tech commercial and residential development that is being created as one of Detroit’s most exciting places to live, work and play. TechTown is one of the largest urban business incubatorsin the country, and it provides office space and services to small start-ups, early-stage companies, local medical labs and medical facilities. Services provided include: incubation services, dry and wet lab space, business consulting services, networking for business, professional and technical services, access to resources at Wayne State University and commercialization assistance.
