Happy New Year and Blessings to all! Greetings from your 2012 Augusta District UMW President! I am a 6

th generation

United Methodist Woman. I believe in our Purpose and uphold the idea that we are a community of Christian women.

Together we make up a unified group that truly makes a difference in the lives of women and children at home and around

As you take in our new theme, please consider: The POWER of the cross, the TRANSFORMATION of the butterfly, the LIFE, DIVERSITY and BEAUTY of flowers, the

VITALITY in the colors, and the ASSURANCE of new things to come…WOW!

Let’s approach this year ahead with Eyes wide, Ears tuned, Hands ready, and Hearts prepared

to serve our Lord.

Jesus loves the little children. Be His child each day- in every way- you can.

Geniene Moore hands over gavel to new AD UMW President, Cheryl Cook.

Geniene Moore, Secretary/Communications- I’m enjoying serving the Augusta District UMW in

my new position as Secretary and Communications Coordinator. It’s so very nice to still be able

to communicate with you and stay in touch. You will receive emails from me and my most

important job will be publishing The Echo. Please submit anything about your unit that you would

like to share. Just a sentence or two would be great. The next issue will be published this

summer. 1 Peter 4:10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards

of God's varied grace:

Carolyn Hawkins, VP I'm a member of Eatonton First, which has a great Unit. It is exciting to

serve as Vice President of the Augusta District UMW. My first job is to pray for the President to

stay in good health. But seriously, we all need to keep all our officers and members of the district

in our prayers daily. Please call me or send an e-mail if you need suggestions planning a

program for your unit or circle.

Nancy Gallagher, Treasurer First of all I want to say, “Thank You for supporting me as your

Maxine Westbrook, Parliamentarian, Parliamentary procedure provides the process for

proposing, amending, approving and defeating motions. Only one subject may be before a group

at one time. Each item to be considered is proposed as a motion which usually requires a

"second" before being put to a vote. Once a motion is made and seconded, the chair places the

question before the council by restating the motion. Negative" motions are generally not

permitted. To dispose of a business item, the motion should be phrased as a positive action to

take, and then, if the group desires not to take this action, the motion should be voted down. The

exception to this rule is when a governing body is asked to take action on a request and wishes

to create a record as to why the denial is justified. Only one person may speak at any given

time. When a motion is on the floor, an order of speaking is prescribed by Robert's Rules,

allowing the mover of a motion to speak first, so that the group understands the basic premise of

the motion. The mover is also the last to speak, so that the group has an opportunity to consider

must be recognized by the moderator prior to speaking. Each speaker should make clear his or

her intent by stating, "I wish to speak for/against the motion" prior to stating arguments. once,

until everyone else has had an opportunity to speak.

Margaret Locklair, Historian, folks! This is Margaret Anne Locklair, your Augusta District UMW

Historian. I am looking forward to seeing you in Warrenton at the District Training Meeting Jan.

28th. I will be telling you about how to keep the history of your unit alive. We are led by our past,

and it is important to know what you are doing now, and how this will be the basis for the future of

your unit. Just like how I love to see pictures and hear stories of my great-grandparents, I want to

be sure to leave a legacy of pictures and stories of us now to be enjoyed by generations to come.

That's the historian job in a nutshell. May God bless you all-Margaret Anne

Margie Bennett, Social Action Coordinator There are many areas that are of concern to the social

services. They include concerns for women, children and youth, Laws have been changed but

there is still work to be done and a voice to be heard to change domestic violence.

- Each year 300,000 women are raped in America - The poverty rate among women climbed to

4.5 percent in 2019

- The number of children and teens in America killed by guns (could) fill 120 classrooms of

25 students each - 16 in every 1000 U.S. women have been threatened by a gun

- 13.5 percent of American women 18 and over are in poor or fair health

The unit should have at least one person join the United Methodist Women's Action Network to

receive and to respond to legislative information. Call your congressional members and tell them

to support S.1447 (SAFE Teen Act would provide funds to teach health relationships and requires

reporting incidents of violence, H.R. 1578 (Violence Against Women Health Initiative Act of.2011

would seek to prevent domestic violence, dating violence sexual assault and health effects of such

violence and improve the safety and health of current victims of such abuse). Choose a priority

social action event each year.

Colleen Tarpley, Spiritual Growth- 706-790-9865- Revelation 21: Then I saw a new heaven and a

new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I

saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride

adorned for her husband; and I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling of

God is with men. He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself will be with

them; he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there

be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away." And he who

sat upon the throne said, "Behold I make all things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words

are trustworthy and true." And he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the

beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the fountain without payment.

UMW “ Faith Hope and LOVE in ACTION” throughout the Augusta District Pierce Memorial Sparta UMW took cookies to shut-ins and visited with them before Christmas and we also provided Christmas presents for a

family with several children and in need. We recently sent care packages to Marines in Afghanistan also.

Eatonton First UMW provided four families with $100 gift certificates at Rountree's Grocery for Christmas. EFUMW also sponsored the "Friends of

Our Troops" and sent 3,700 Christmas cards to our military men and women. As a part of Nurture and Outreach, Chairperson Carolyn Hawkins and

her committee organized the first ever "Mother Daughter Banquet" with a delicious meal, young mother as speaker, fashion show, and 75 in

attendance.

Harlem UMW had a wonderful Christmas fellowship time with finger foods and gift exchange game. A devotional was given prior to the food and

fun. We delivered fruit and candy baskets to our shut-ins and as is our custom put the Chrismon tree up in the sanctuary. We are now looking

forward to our UMW month and Sunday in February. Our guest speaker on February 12th will be Cindy Gaskins with Jay's Hope. The HOPE Circle

at Wesley UMC is throwing a "shower" for Safe Homes of Augusta. It will be at Wesley UMC on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, from 3pm to 4pm in room

22. Contact Jennie Hodges at 706-373-9863 for information on what they need if you would like to attend. Come join in the fun, food, and

fellowship.

Pierce UMW in Augusta went to the Doubletree Hotel for our Christmas luncheon. We had the church Christmas dinner and provided a turkey for it.

We will be having our planning meeting on Tues. Jan. 17 to plan programs and event for the year. We will be having a rummage sale probably the

first Sat. in March. On the last Sat. of Oct. we went to St. John Towers and did a birthday party for the people living there whose birthdays were in

Oct. Everyone helped with our Harvest Festival on Nov. 12.

Walker UMW, made donations to Greene Co. Habitat for Humanity, Atlas Ministries, New Bethlehem Center and supported Circle of Love, Greene

Co. food bank and the Animal Shelter with supplies. We took poinsettias to our shut-ins at Christmas and supplied gifts for 2 young ladies that were

under DFACS care.

Shiloh UMW provided Christmas for an 8 year old girl. Shiloh made a donation to New Bethlehem Community Center to aid Millicent West, the

director in her efforts to provide gift cards to teachers to purchase supplies for students. Shiloh also donates soda can pop tops to the Ronald

McDonald House. We also made prayer blankets for a couple of UMW members fighting cancer. We are selling our Cookbooks again.

In December members of the Louise Rees Circle of the Lincolnton United Methodist Church traditionally choose a family or individuals to give

gifts during this season. This year cash gifts were given to one family and two sons of a deceased mom. Also, in October the circle celebrated an

early Thanksgiving treat by making and taking soup to shut-ins in 60 homes in the community. The soup, cornbread, and desert ministry began in

2001 for the circle.

Smyrna UMW of Washington adopted a family of two children and their father at Christmas. We went through our local school system for this

family. The mother had left the family with no good byes in October. We fulfilled the Santa Wishes of the children as well as clothes for them and

their father. In addition we supplied grocery items for Christmas Dinner of turkey and all the trimmings.

BERLIN UMW held its Annual Chocolate Celebration on Saturday, December 10, 2011 from 1-4:00 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. Our ladies

prepared everything from cookies to candies, hot chocolate mixes, even chocolate covered bacon and more. The event was a

huge success. Santa was there visiting with the children, as well as having their pictures made. We hope to continue this event in the future. All

proceeds were presented as a love offering to a member of our congregation who will be undergoing a stem cell transplant procedure in February.

Thanks to everyone who attended.
