COVER STAR

Gods Own JunkyardIn July last year the E List featured Chris Bracey of God Own Junkyard (GOJY) as our Local Hero. At the time his business was facing potential eviction through the sale of its site on Valentin Road. There was a real possibility that Walthamstow might not only lose a successful manufacturing business, but also one of the world’s largest collections of neon, as well as a popular location for film, TV, fashion and music shoots. Some months later the land was indeed sold for redevelopment and the hunt was on for a new site. Before closing its doors crowds flocked to GOJY not only from all over London but across the world drawn by a welter of press from New York to Dubai. It became more and more

COVER STAR

Gods Own Junkyardapparent that this was a world class visitor attraction that Walthamstow couldn’t afford to lose.

Thankfully in the end Chris and his team managed to find a site close by and GOJY re-opened just before Christmas in a new home off Shernhall Street.

I really loved the original outdoor space, our own version of Las Vegas’s Neon Bone Yard, but the new site is even better. It’s over four times the size and is the perfect home for many of the stunning pieces Chris has produced for film, music and fashion over his 40-year career.

The cavernous interior glimmers from floor-to-ceiling. You can see the HOTEL neon from The Dark Knight next to the STARK

sign that Chris made for Ironman, and then an oversized top hat from Kubrick’s last movie Eyes Wide Shut. Signs from blockbusters like World War Z and Tomb Raider decorate the sizeable mezzanine that overlooks the main arena.

Chris is excited about his new home. “As it’s much bigger than the last place, I really wanted to have fun with it and make it as Bladerunner as possible. That shed (a focus point of the old yard) belonged to my neighbour and she was going to get rid of it. I took it off her hands, filled it with God and Jesus signs and turned it into a chapel. Now though, I think I’m going to tilt it for a while, so it looks a bit like the Kansas house that lands in Oz.”. He describes the

new interior as “what the inside of my brain looks like”. The space also showcases vintage signs from as far back as the 1930s and original circus signs made by Chris’ father.

He has plans to install a large Victorian bar rescued from a local pub and create a seating and refreshment area for visitors. An outdoor terraced area at the rear will also open during the summer period; and plans are already afoot to create a Day of the Triffids-style garden, with plants growing through neon pieces and salvaged signs.

Anyway it’s great to see GOJY open again here in Walthamstow and may its fame continue to spread far and wide.

This month in Walthamstow

FebruaryWELCOME to the first anniversary issue of the

E List, one year on and we’re still here. He’ll hate this but I want to thank Neil Collins of Estates 17 again for all his encouragement and support, because without him this whole enterprise would have just remained one of those ‘wouldn’t it be good if...’ ideas you have after a few pints down the pub.

It’s been an interesting year for Walthamstow and one where many of us got to discover, only then to almost lose the escapist wonder that is Gods Own Junkyard. If you haven’t seen it yet then I urge you to visit its new home on Ravenswood Industrial Estate on Shernhall Street. Aside from the collection, Chris Bracey’s workshop is one in a long line of world class manufacturing businesses, past and present, based in Walthamstow. As the current demand for housing rises the pressure to redevelop these last little pockets of industrial space increases and we lose more and more of them. I find this really sad because it seems to be a signifier that we still undervalue the people and business who actually make things in this country. In the past Walthamstow was renowned for its light industry but this reputation is sadly slipping away. Only last month it was announced that the Mandora Mannequin Factory on Blackhorse Lane has been forced to relocate by development. And at the end of last year a great icon of E17’s manufacturing past, the Ensign camera factory on Fulbourne Road was demolished. Stripped of its ugly modern cladding the exterior could have been returned to it former glory making an iconic apartment block and a fitting memorial. On pages 12-13 we look at the building, Ensign and its cameras.

Finally, I grew up near Brighton and at school in the 70s I was a white kid amongst only white kids. Bizarrely I felt different to my peers because my dad was foreign. Our holidays were mainly spent visiting his family who were an international mix of Swiss, American, Indian and Dutch. I always loved the sound of all the different languages being spoken at family gatherings, and that sound still gives me a sense of home as I walk the streets of Walthamstow. It is interesting listening to Fabien Ho, this month’s Local Hero, talking about his upbringing, as he moved around the world, and about his project for this year’s E17 Art Trail entitled “Mixed Race”. He describes his experience as an outsider, not negatively, but as someone who doesn’t belong to a single tribe and I can relate to that. It is a common experience to many residents of Walthamstow and in some way perhaps unites much of the town. Interestingly it isn’t always about race or nationality, it can be as simple as moving here from another part of London or maybe a small village in Devon. Perhaps the term ‘outsider’ can constitute a unifying principle?

Making your moveby poem by Niall Firth of Forest Poets

There’s a shy glance over a chipped cup, an accidental brush of the sleeve as she got up but, oh God, you didn’t half make a right mess of it. Sure, there’s

something to be said for the way you straightened your back and zipped up your coat, marched across the cafe and, as we all watched, jaw-dropped, asked for her number - shudder - while we sat

heads down over our beans and chips, hoping the crash-clatter of fork on plate or the hissing steam of the coffee machine would drown out what we knew was going on over by the window.

Maybe that’s why, as you slipped back into your seat and calmy speared a cooling chip, we just passed the ketchup and didn’t say a bloody thing.

International Women’s Day 2014

In December 2013 Walthamstow lost its own Hoover building.

If you saw the metal spring factory on Fulbourne Road opposite the entrance to Homebase, shrouded as it was by bland ugly grey cladding, you could be forgiven for overlooking its significance. The planning committee overlooked its significance too when permission to demolish it was approved last year in the face of a heated campaign to preserve it. What was the fuss all about?

Well, it was a 1920s palace of industry, a camera factory masquerading as a 1980s factory unit. It was originally designed by renowned architects Wallis, Gilbert & Partners together with a veritable greatest hits of Art Deco factory buldings including the egyptian-inspired Caribonum factory on Etloe Road, Leyton in 1920 for the manufacture of typewriter ribbons, ones for Wrigley (1927) and Firestone Tyres (1928) and yes the 1931 Hoover building in west London, and also the slightly less iconic the Victoria Coach Station.

Anyway, let’s rewind time to 1837. There was a french painter called Louis Daguerre who had almost simultaneously invented photography at the same time as England’s William Fox Talbot was recording his bay window in Lacock Abbey for posterity. Daguerre’s technique involved coating small, polished metal plates with light sensitive chemicals. These are exposed to light and shade, channelled through a lens to burn an image of the sitter or scene onto the plate. Exposures of at least a minute were needed, which explains some of the stony faced antique portraits you see. Another downside to the process was that Daguerreotypes were one-offs. Fox Talbot on the other hand was already one step ahead developing negatives from which multiple copies could be reproduced. Commercial photography was born.

London-based glass merchants on High Holborn, Antoine Claudet (another frenchman) and George Houghton, diversified into this new industry when Claudet managed to obtain instructions and a license directly from Louis Daguerre to set up a studio while Houghton concentrated on photographic supplies. Claudet sped up exposure times with different chemicals to the relief of his sitters and even invented the safe darkroom ‘red light’. Claudet died in 1867 but Houghton’s son was already on board and by 1903 they’d expanded into the property next door and were now making their own-brand film called Ensign Daylight Loading photographic roll film. Incorporating other smaller camera makers trade was now so

brisk for Houghton Ltd that they built a factory on Fulbourne Road in Walthamstow to fulfill demand, adding the Ensign brand to their range of cameras. Joining forces with cinematic camera and projector manufacturer W Butcher staffing levels reached over 700, making it Britain’s (or as the publicity boasted the Empire’s) biggest camera factory. The original 1920 building was designed by the aforementioned Wallis, Gilbert & Partners and was 280 ft wide and 75 ft deep. Constructed of reinforced concrete and featuring small-paned metal windows with brick spandrels, it was built initially as a single storey with four first floor offices, but later an entire first floor was added to increase production space. Even though the High Holborn headquarters were destroyed by bombing during WW2 the factory played its part in the war effort producing items for the armed forces. Sadly after the war demand had waned and despite various mergers, foreign imports finally took their toll and Ensign production moved to Clapham Common in 1955. It was the end of an era.

Wallis, Gilbert & Partners’ Caribonum factory in Leyton was pulled down in 1980 for redevelopment, the same year their Firestone Tyre factory building on the Great West Road was hastily demolished before it could be listed. And sadly, on our watch, the Ensign factory has been

pulled down too, but it’s in good company you might say. But the brand needn’t be forgotten, Ensign cameras live on in second-hand world. Look out for something like an Ensign Selfix or Ranger Special, you can pick one up for less than £50. These cameras take what are known as ‘120’ rolls of film which is still being made and processed today. You can even buy it in colour! You’ll only get about a dozen photos per roll (with developing costs from £6) but once you get the knack of using these beautiful, Walthamstow-made cameras every photo you take will be imbued with a true romance and lo-fi quality that Instagram can only mimic.

The factory is gone, there’s no point crying over spilt developer (ironic pun intended) but a little bit of vintage Ensign technology could continue to fill our analogue family albums for years yet.

Been down Pig Alley recently?Have you ambled along Alfred Street, wandered down Warwick Road, or strolled through Stafford Road recently? You may have done so without realising, as these are just some of the Walthamstow roads whose names have changed over the years. These today are Comely Bank Road, Barratt Road and St Barnabas Road.

Nineteenth century Walthamstow rapidly grew from a village into a town, with a multitude of new streets being laid out from the 1860s onwards, alongside those already existing. Street naming wasn’t always cohesive and names were often changed for practical reasons, especially when there were streets with similar names. At one point, there were two Victoria Roads! Church Road was changed with Selborne Road East to St Mary Road in 1886, and Beulah Path, originally known as Pig Alley and also as Church Path was given its current name in 1891-2. Confusingly, Vallentin Road was also called

Church Path between 1871 and 1879.

Street renaming often occurred when roads were incorporated. Part of Church Common Lane ran between what is now Third Avenue and St Mary’s churchyard and was renamed North Road in 1855, before becoming part of Orford Road c.1860, later joining with the stretch between Stanhope Road and West Avenue in 1886 to form the current Orford Road. The part of Hoe Street before Bell Corner was once Green Leaf Lane and was renamed Hoe Street North in 1889, the whole road being renamed Hoe Street c. 1894. In 1886 Forest Road was formed from several smaller roads, including Clay Street which ran between Blackhorse Lane and Wood Street. It seems impossible to imagine that part of Lea Bridge Road was once named Chestnut Walk because it was lined with chestnut trees and that Marsh Street (renamed High Street in 1882) once led directly to the marshes and incorporated part of St James Street.

Often relatively new streets were renamed soon after being built, such as Ferndale Grove,

existent by 1892 but renamed Wolsey Road in 1898 and again as Wolsey Avenue in 1907, and Highfield Avenue, first occupied in 1936 but quickly renamed Bishop’s Close. James Road and St James Road, first occupied in 1867 were changed to Byron Road in 1886, while Hawkesley Terrace, in existence by 1884 was changed to Hawkesley Road in 1892 and renamed Southcote Road in 1911.

Other name changes include Blind Lane (became Wadham Road c. 1888), Vicarage Road (became Church Hill Road 1875), Munster Terrace (became Manby Road 1894, incorporated into Tenby Road 1909), Cromer Road (became Albion Road 1903), Kings Street (became Grange Road 1907), Grove Place (became Buxton Road 1886) and Chapel End Lane (became Chingford Road 1887).

Street renaming doesn’t often occur today, but as Walthamstow continues to develop, it would be nice to revisit abolished names in some form. Although perhaps not Pig Alley.

You had a less than conventional childhood. I was born in Milan & grew up in rather random places including Stuttgart, Vienna, Lausanne, Lugano, Singapore as well as Iran. I was a child when we were evacuated out of Tehran when the Ayatollah revolution began. My mum tells me our next door neighbours, who were expats like us, were shot and killed as they hadn’t left in time

What drew you to Walthamstow as a place to put down roots? It wasn’t a conscious decision. I drifted here when I got a job in London and met someone who was already living here. The reasons for staying are more compelling. The sense of community is incomparable with anywhere else I’ve attempted to call home.

Because of your background you describe yourself as an “outside observer of people, culture and places”. Do you think in some way seeing yourself as an outsider is a common experience for people with mixed heritage? It’s a good question but I can only speak for myself as I’ve discovered the experiences of mixed race individuals are not homogeneous. Growing up I knew no one else who was half French half Chinese. Being in a different country every few years meant the languages I was surrounded by was ever changing. I think I sought commonalities throughout and this is where my interest in the visual arts has come from. The sense of identity based around something as arbitrary as your place of birth is merely one of chance. I seem unable to partake in the tribal instincts behind cheering a national team, or indeed, the larger sense of patriotism, which is incidental as far as I see it. Part of me has always yearned for that sense of belonging, which I think, at 37, I have found in Walthamstow.

You are working on a photography project called “Mixed Race 17” for this year’s E17 Art Trail. I try to document an alternate sense of community & ownership; last year it was the Walthamstow Twitter community with their most cherished inherited objects. The year before I’d photographed Walthamstow’s dog-owning community. I am drawn to what we define as communities beyond religion or ethnicity & the things we attach ourselves to. Identities we choose from a self-construct

instead of one we inherit. Being mixed race presents a liberation of sorts as it’s up to you to define who you are & my starting point for this project asks what is race anyway? I’m looking for participants & am keen to hear from an older generation. I think their stories would differ from our experience today. Please email [email protected] if you’d like to take part or visit Facebook.com/mixedrace17 for more information.

You’re one of the lucky few who live on Walthamstow Marshes. What do you love about them? The big sky. It changes every minute of every day and I can see why Luke Howard, the father of meteorology who lived up the road in the 1800s, devised a system for identifying the different types of clouds we know today.

The Mural on the Marshes has been a great success. It started when I got fed up of the constant cycle of uninspiring graffiti along the walls of the railway tunnel and I thought we could do something better. I wanted to celebrate the different wildlife which inhabit the marsh & it was a fantastic experience working with local & international artists. It was a team effort and I couldn’t have done it without the support of Clare Coghill, the ranger Gavin Johnson, as well as Katja Rosenberg, who kindly facilitated the children’s community days that formed our artists’ brief. The mural has proven a great way to reclaim the space, make it feel

safe once more whilst getting more visitors to discover the joys of the marsh.

You are now involved in the St James Street Big Local. I’m a believer that taking ownership of the place in which we live can collectively make a positive difference - whether it is to help set up a small residents group when I first moved here 15 years ago to the more recent Waltham Forest 4 Dogs community which represents 250 local dog owners in the borough. Individuals that get together can make things better & St James Street Big Local is just that. The steering committee of residents from all walks of life has secured funding & are looking for Street Champions as well as to employ an admin role to support our projects. We have £1million over several years to implement our wish list. If you live around the St James area & want to be a part of how we can create a legacy for the area, contact Fiona or myself [email protected]

Finally what would you like to see for the town in the next few years?

I’d like to see us to continue to welcome newbies to the area & afford them the generosity of letting them call Walthamstow home too. It baffles me that there is indifference to how local decisions which affect our lives are made & my wish is for more people to get stuck in!

WalthamstowDiaryBetween forest and marsh lies the glorious Stow. These are the tales and meanderings of a proud resident of E17

When I was at primary school we had one Acorn Electron computer that we all shared. I remember sitting with my friend Mark staring in amazement at its green flickering screen, we always felt like we were at the helm of The Starship Enterprise when it was our turn at the computer desk. Now of course most of us take technology for granted. I for one love my iPhone, camera, maps and internet. Communication is always at my finger tips. As much as I love technology, and I really do love technology, I also have a passion for old things. Anything old will grab my attention, radios made of Bakelite, antique furniture and one of my favourites, old shop fronts like Manze’s Pie & Mash Shop.

Old buildings are my real weakness; I love to take photos of them on my phone, much to the annoyance of my other half. When I’m wandering around E17 I always keep my eye out for something I haven’t seen or snapped before. There’s lots to see around Walthamstow, the old grand houses on Wood Street, The Ancient

House, St Mary’s Church and the Clock House behind the International Supermarket to name but a few. There is one old building however that I have become slightly obsessed with, mainly because it is so out of place, that building is the Lighthouse on Markhouse Road, a lighthouse built over 30 miles away from the sea.

I love everything about this building, from the tall winding tower topped with a glass lantern that points the way home at night, to the classroom block built with bricks initialled by their makers. My favourite view of the Lighthouse is that from Downsfield Road when walking towards Markhouse, particularly in the spring when the cherry trees are in flower. The tower always looks spectacular against a blue sky. The design of the Lighthouse is down to Captain King of the Bullard King shipping line who insisted on the nautical theme, and thank goodness he did as the design gives us one of our most unique buildings.

‘I understand the reasoning behind the ultra violet lighting and booming classical music in Walthamstow Bus Station toilets, but does anyone else find that they turn the simple act of having a wee into a surreal experience?’54 72 Sharan: It’s like having a pee in a spaceship!!Sheree: The toilet doors should open with a ‘woooshhhh’ sound like Star TrekSteve: Is it Handel’s Water Music?Sophie: I’ve fully laughed out loud while wee-ing before! As the music from Fantasia came on and I was sitting in a smelly loo in Walthamstow, hahaha.Keith: The light, fine. The classical music I think is disgusting. The subtext seems to be that bored teenagers are vermin who can be cleared away by exposure to culture.Mick: I don’t care what music they play (as long as it’s not jazz). I just wish they would stop smelling so bad! Jolene: I often feel as though I’m in a film when waiting for a bus there. The music has a somewhat dissociative effect. ..Adrian: Everything in Walthamstow Bus Station is a surreal experience.

‘There’s a girl with really short blonde hair (like Sarah Harding of Girls Aloud) that I see on the tube most days, when I get on at Blackhorse Road and I always find myself just looking at her. I wish I could talk to her but I can’t (she’s far out of my league ha-ha!)... If that’s you, or you know of her, this guy in the green parka jacket and puffed up hair thinks you’re amazing! If only eh?!?’67 33 Michael: Buy a bunch of roses one day, offer them to her and tell her you think she’s amazing.Karen: Go for it, nobody is out of anybody’s league! Emma: If someone gave me flowers on the

tube it would make my day! Philip: Give a brief low-key smile with the eyes, maybe a nod of recognition. Three or four months later you might even ask her out. Modern ‘courtship’ is an elaborate dance.Melanie: Write a note and pass it to her Better still follow her to work and wait outside till she’s finished then follow her home. Girls love that.Stirling: Sorry, I hate to be ‘that’ guy, but walking up to a random girl who you’ve never spoken to with a bunch of flowers is really creepy.Michael: Looks like Sarah Harding on the tube, must be the Sound of the Underground.

‘Any fans of the Channel 4 series “Educating Yorkshire”? I loved it, so interested to hear that the secondary school, Frederick Bremer in Walthamstow has been asked to appear in the next series!’56 10 Honey: Yay to Frederick Bremer. The kids are really excited!Silvana: Apparently it’s going to be called, ‘Educating East London’
