DIAMONDLand BankA specialist agricultural bank for those involved in ensuring South Africa’s food security. The Land and Agricultural Development Bank of South Africa (Land Bank) is South Africa’s only specialist agricultural bank. Established in 1912, the bank’s sole objective is to serve South African commercial and emerging farmers and bring specially designed financial services within their reach. These services enable farmers to finance land, equipment, improve assets and obtain production credit. The Land Bank provides innovative and competitive financial products and services and constantly reviews its offerings to ensure that they match the needs of the industry. As change has swept across the sector in South Africa, the socio-economic makeup of agriculture has altered. It brought new entrants from historically disadvantaged backgrounds on to the land, who faced challenges of establishing sustainable agri-businesses across the agricultural value chain. Land Bank has been a commercial lifeline for these farmers, offering them appropriately designed financial products that facilitate personal and commercial viability in a sector that is vital to the sustainability of South Africa and its people.Although established by government mandate, Land Bank receives no direct financial subsidies from government. Instead, it relies on the expertise of skilled staff that competes on equal terms with commercial banks to obtain the funds it needs from the capital markets at wholesale interest rates. These funds are then lent to its agricultural clients at market-related rates. However, as Land Bank enjoys ‘tax-free’ status, and also pays no dividends to government, all funds raised are used for development.

GOLDAgriSETAAgriSETA creates and promotes opportunities for social, economic and employment growth for agri-enterprises through relevant, quality and accessible education, training and development in both primary and secondary agriculture, in conjunction with other stakeholders in agriculture. The scope of AgriSETA covers the agricultural sector from input services to the farm, activities on the farm and the first level processing activities from the farm. In terms of the Skills Development Act, we are responsible for the skills development of the agricultural workforce, employed and unemployed. The AgriSETA facilitates the implementation of learning through learnerships, skills programmes, adult education and training, and tertiary studies or in-service training by allocating grants and bursaries. It also supports apprentices, interns and mentorships. To ensure the quality provision of education and training, we are also responsible for accrediting sector-specific training providers and for monitoring the standard of training presented. Old Mutual/Mutual & Federal Agri The role of organised agriculture and its leaders is becoming more important every day. Agri SA has assumed the lead in addressing the challenges faced by commercial farmers and the agricultural sector. Uncertainty regarding the future forms part of these challenges, and by designing and creating our future we will be best able to predict it.We believe we now have an opportunity to come forward with concrete proposals and action plans to show the way. We wish you every success with the task at hand. The important role that family businesses play in agriculture and the economy at large is widely recognised. It remains a concern, however, that relatively few businesses are able to continue operating successfully across generations. Thorough succession planning can play an important role to address this. Spouses and others involved should participate in discussions around succession planning for family businesses to help ensure the sustainability thereof.Old Mutual has a proud history extending over more than 170 years, which is closely interwoven with events in South Africa and within agriculture. We have had to address major challenges and uncertainties together with our clients, and today we are still here as a reliable friend during difficult times.Together with Mutual & Federal and Nedbank, we have more than 400 years’ experience and continue to offer the most comprehensive production solutions for farmers. We are here to help you to create certainty amidst these uncertain times by providing appropriate financial advice to your farming business and your family, also with a view to the future and your legacy.Thank you for the opportunity to be involved in your congress once again.

NedbankNedbank’s relationship with the farming community has evolved beyond that of a lender to one of forging partnerships, focused on holistic solutions for everyday and seasonal operational requirements. We are also cognisant of the effects of the country’s worst drought in three decades, and to this end have contributed more than R1,25 million to support farmers in this time of need. As a bank, Nedbank is proud to partner with Agri SA, which has been the voice of the industry for over a century. We are committed to taking your agribusiness to the next level, and hope to harness the skills and experience of both Agri SA and Nedbank agriculture specialists to support farmers in growing the business. This partnership further promotes innovative solutions to the resource challenges facing agriculture. Nedbank would like to take this opportunity to wish Agri SA well and we look forward to a continued partnership with a mutual goal to contribute to the economy and create jobs through working on innovative solutions together. Nedbank agri-solutions include financing of renewable energy solutions, instalment sale finance and production loans, and a range of flexible insurance solutions for farming activities through AgriPlus insurance.

NWKDynamics in Agriculture ... dynamics can be described as energetic, lively, and strong – a force that change stimulates or progress with a system or process. There are so many variables in the agricultural value chain and the interaction between these variables is what causes dynamics. Let’s think of a few:Land → Reform/other Actors/training funding/ investments.Water → Availability, rainfall, water rights, regulation, pollution.Inputs → Exchange/local/international/availability.Market access → Price formation/local/international.Politics → Moderate/transformation.Infrastructure → Availability, maintenance.Funding → Availability, interest rates. All these aspects are on the agenda of agriculture leaders to pack this interaction that it will be acceptable to the majority in the value chain for a prosperous and healthy agricultural environment. Good luck to all the agricultural leaders and the congress.Danie Marais – Managing Director, NWK Limited

ObaroEvery morning when I unlock my office I open the farm gate of every Obaro client. Everybody at Obaro virtually and physically walks with me through the gate and contributes to the farming activities. Every action at Obaro is focused on the success of our farmers. Over the past year we stood in the fields, looked for clouds, prayed and planned with you. Every day and every year bring its own unique challenges, but we persevere. We will never stop making plans. Obaro will continue to open the farm gate and scout the horizon with you. “Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places.”Dear Lord, thank you that today will be a good day.

we will remain, as always,

SanlamSanlam and agriculture share a long history. Over the past nine decades the company has supported farmers through its involvement in various agricultural initiatives. The Sanlam Group also offers farmers tailor made financial solutions via Financial Solutions for Agricultural Business Owners, the company’s portfolio of financial services for farmers.

SenwesAs always it is a pleasure and indeed a privilege for Senwes to again be a sponsor of the Agri SA Congress. The role of organised agriculture is becoming more and more important as the sector faces stiff challenges from both Mother Nature and political influences. Food security is under ongoing threat as more and more citizens move to the cities and our African neighbouring countries also look our way to feed their people. South African farmers have a reputation for creating miracles despite overwhelming odds. Which is why the theme of this year’s Agri SA conference is absolutely spot on! “Dynamism in Agriculture” is exactly what is required for us to weather the storm and stay ahead of the game.Senwes set the trend to involve new audiences and markets through its Nation in Conversation initiative, engaging ever more people through the Nation in Conversation app and supportive digital platforms. We received unprecedented coverage in mainstream mass publications like the Sowetan, talk radio and other media platforms, which generally shun agri issues. The result is that more people are talking about agriculture and brand agriculture is moving closer to the very people it exists for.I believe that the Agri SA congress this year will bear much needed dynamic fruits in terms of the theme content, which is land reform, safety, natural resources and impact of the mining sector on our industry.Don’t stop the conversation!

Protectyour legacy.Sanlam recognises how hard you work to grow your agricultural business.

We also know that poor planning can be detrimental to its future. Sanlam can helpyou secure your legacy for generations to come.

Statistics South AfricaStatistics South Africa (Stats SA) would like to take this opportunity to thank the Agri SA leadership and members for the extensive support provided during the Community Survey 2016 project. You done us proud by ensuring that the results were published within the expected timeframe. We are positive that you will continue your support for the surveys currently in the field, in particular the South African Demographic and Health Survey (SADHS) and the Annual Agricultural Survey. As Stats SA is moving to higher levels through innovative digital data collection, the collaboration we continuously receive from Agri SA will be of paramount importance. We wish Agri SA all the best in its deliberations during the 2016 Congress.

Standard BankStandard Bank supports the view that Agriculture is the cornerstone on which South Africa’s food security and subsequently economic and social stability rests, therefore, in the context of ensuring that all South Africans have access too affordable, nutritious food, in the short and the long term, a thriving Agricultural sector is vital to a prosperous South Africa. The strategic importance of Agriculture is echoed in the National Development Plan, the 9-point plan in the 2015 state of nation address and the recent initiatives between Business & Government to boost the SA economy. In the face of the recent gloomy outlook on unemployment, especially among the youth, it makes it an imperative to encourage investment in agriculture. On the other side the average age of the South African Farmer is well over 55. We need to work relentlessly and we need to work together to make agriculture attractive, sustainable, and ensure succession in the industry. Standard Bank remains optimistic amid the recent drought. Agriculture is a cyclical- long-term business, and thus remains resilient, and will recover from this sluggish position. Standard Bank further believes that continued, constructive participation via appropriate structures such as Agri SA will eventually result in amicable solutions to the policy uncertainties facing South African Agriculture.Standard Bank also remains committed to finding sustainable financial solutions to maintain and increase agricultural production and processing, ensuring sustainability of the agricultural industry.Standard Bank wishes Agri SA a fruitful and constructive 2016 Congress.

AGRI SA’S BUSINESS PARTNERS WITH WHOM THERE IS A SPECIFIC AGREEMENTAgri SA acknowledges its business partners, contributing at various levels of

the organisation: CrisisOnCall, Nissan SA, Sanlam, T&E FinOps, Sonfin and

Alisom.

CrisisOnCall CrisisOnCall is proud to have been a business partner of Agri SA since June 2005 through its association with Agri Securitas Trust Fund. This past year CrisisOnCall was privileged to be able to help a number of farmers who are CrisisOnCall members. This assistance ranged from helping a farmer’s wife involved in a collision to a number of farmers and their wives with medical events on their farms some distance away from the nearest city.In these latter cases, the telephonic medical support offered by CrisisOnCall while an ambulance was en route, was of great help and comfort. Trip monitoring for farmers undertaking journeys, or while travelling to and from their farms has increased significantly. Many farmers log into this service when leaving town to return to their farms and stay “connected” until the last call when they arrive home safely. Farmers are vitally important to us as they provide a phenomenal contribution the provision of food security and that is why we view each farmer and his family with who are members of CrisisOnCall, with fondness.Feel free to visit our website at www.crisisoncall.co.za or send an sms with the words “Agri SA, name and/or email address” to 48950. Nissan SAThe commitment of Nissan SA to the support of the Agri Securitas Trust Fund has been ongoing for a period of eighteen years whereby Nissan SA makes a contribution of R1500 to the Trust Fund for every Nissan vehicle purchased by a member of the farming or agricultural community. The usual method of using a Fleet Code, F14911 to qualify for a discount when a vehicle is purchased from a dealer is still in operation.Contributions to the Trust Fund is applied, as an example, to provide a counselling service to the farming community, the operation of a Security Desk in the Free State, which has led to great success in the prevention of farm attacks, providing communication systems to the farming community for emergency communication in the implementation of security strategies and so on.This confirms Nissan SA commitment and it comes as no surprise that Nissan SA has such a strong affiliation with the farming sector. This motor manufacturer has a history of more than 70 years in this market with the most comprehensive range of commercial vehicles currently on the market. The range comprises from the NP 200 with a load capacity of 800 kg, the reliable range of one tonner NP300 Hardbody to the Navara models and the ultimate work horse vehicle, the Patrol pickup. During the congress, some of the above mentioned vehicles will be on display and we welcome you to come and have a closer look.

T&E FinOpsDear Agri SAT&E FinOps, Agri SA’s first partner, signed a partnership with Agri SA in 1999. This partnership has been a part of the 112-year-old legacy of Agri SA for 17 years. T & E FinOps greatly appreciates this business relationship and, by being a part of Agri SA’s vision for the future, contributes to the “dynamics in agriculture.” As part of our contribution, we have extended the Family Protector benefits to ensure a dynamic product that comprehensively addresses the needs of the Agri community. The Family Protector is specifically designed to address the risks the farming community is facing, and to manage the risk dynamically through custom-made risk benefits for families.T & E FinOps undertakes to ensure that this Family Protector keeps up with the security needs of the farming community through dynamic development of exceptional risk benefit options. We are confident that this partnership is also significant for Agri SA and that, in the distant future, we will deliver a positive contribution to the welfare of the Agri family. We look forward too many more years of working with Agri SA!

SonfinSonfin believes that any contribution towards the Agri Securitas Trust Fund will make a difference in the safety of farming communities, since the Trust Fund provides farming communities with financial assistance to help prevent crime on a proactive basis.Sonfin has comprehensive means to offer purpose-made solar energy solutions to clients who wish to make provision for their own energy requirements and improve their profitability. Sonfin uses only the most technologically advanced products, for example solar panels with a 30-year performance guarantee. If individuals and organisations in the agricultural sector make use of Sonfin’s services and the reference “Agri Sec/Sonfin” is cited, the company will make a financial contribution to the Trust Fund.Farmers should take note of the astronomical growth that the solar PV industry manage to maintain throughout the world. Worldwide installed capacity has grown from 5,1 Gigawatt (GW) to 227 GW in the last 10 years.Eskom recently announced on their website that applications for low-voltage (LV) connection of solar PV plants will now also be accepted. Medium-voltage (MV) connections are also still allowed and follow the IPP process.Another positive development for solar PV systems is the changes effected in Section 12B of the Income Tax Act of 1962. With effect from 1 January 2016 the accelerated depreciation period for solar PV systems smaller than 1MW was reduced to 1 year (100% allowance).ENQUIRIES: Chris Schutte, cel 072 102 6979, email: [email protected], website: www.sonfin.co.za.

INTRODUCING TOYOTA SA/AGRI SA YOUNG FARMER FINALISTSAgri SA regards this competition as valuable because young role

models are identified, which are important for new entrants, as

well as for the future of the industry. The finalists are the cream

of young farmers in South Africa. The national winner will be

announced on 27 October 2016. During the 13th year that this

competition has been held, Agri SA wishes to introduce the

finalists:

North West: Johan GriffithsJohan Griffiths was born on 9 May 1986, is married to Melissa, and was named as Agri North West’s Young Farmer of the Year. He has been farming on the farm Volspoed in the Brits district for the past 12 years. His farming operation consists of 95% crops under irrigation, with seed maize, oats, vegetables, dry beans, maize and wheat under production. On the remaining 5%, he farms with exotic game. His vision for the future is to expand his farming operation by adding more irrigation land and to produce and process farm produce in order to cut out the middle man as far as possible. Johan says young farmers play a critical role in sustainable food production and should start thinking in a fresh and innovative way to adapt to changing climatic and economic conditions. Today’s young farmers are the leaders of tomorrow. He serves on the Crocodile West Irrigation Board, is a member of Agri North West’s Young Farmer Association and serves as deacon in his church. His workshop does repairs on police vehicles in the area free of charge and he supplies free vegetables to the local prison and Letlabong primary school.

Free State: DJ van der Linde In the 20th year of the Young Farmer Competition in the Free State, DJ van der Linde of the farm St Helena near Vierfontein was named Free State Agriculture’s Young Farmer of the Year. He is married to Rianette and has been farming for the past eight years. He completed a B Ed Tech degree at the North-West University.Since 2012, he has systematically expanded his farming operations, refined his planting techniques and started to manage his planting and harvesting processes with precision. His farming operations include white and yellow maize and sunflower crops as well as a cattle unit. In managing his farm he constantly devises plans to upgrade equipment technologically rather than replacing it. These skills are used optimally on the farm.Van der Linde says that “young farmers are the plan-makers, the future of the industry and the farmers of tomorrow who must ensure that our children plant food for South Africa”. He always sees something positive in everything.

Western Cape: Jacques BeukesJacques Beukes, a 35-year-old table grape producer from De Doorns in the Hex River Valley, is Agri Western Cape and Santam Agriculture’s Young Farmer of the Year. He is married to Heleen.Jacques, who completed a B Com degree in Logistics at the University of Stellenbosch, has been farming for 10 years on the farm Modderdrift. He is Agri Western Cape’s regional representative, a director of the Hex Valley Table Grape Association, and chair of the Breede Valley municipality’s producer forum.“Young farmers bring new ideas and energy to the economy. They like new developments and challenges,” he says.Jacques says he likes the table grape industry: “I will continue investing in this wonderful industry. There are many challenges every day, but you have to convert them into opportunities. By striving for higher standards, you put your fellow farmers under pressure to raise their own standards. In this way you can contribute to a better agricultural industry in South Africa.”

Mpumalanga: Japie LandmanJapie Landman was named Mpumalanga Agriculture’s Young Farmer of the Year at the organisation’s annual congress dinner. He is married to Cecil and the couple have one child. He completed a B Com degree in Agribusiness Management at the University of Pretoria.Japie farms on the farm Vlakdrift in the Volksrust district with maize, soya and cattle. As a crop farmer, he uses water economically and applies minimum-cultivation practices. He has been farming for eight years with his father, but is responsible for decision-making within his section. According to Japie, young farmers are the future of agriculture. “Young farmers have to become increasingly innovative to create jobs, ensure food security and deal with land reform.” He also believes that there is much value in staying in contact with experienced and successful farmers to tap their knowledge.

Eastern Cape: Chilli Matshidzula A young farmer is making waves in Eastern Cape agriculture, scooping successes and awards as he farms dairy on the outskirts of Alexandria.Tshilidze Matshidzula, fondly known as “Chilli” by his peers, is a 27-year-old farmer who looks set to do big things in the future and has recently been awarded the Toyota Young Farmer of the Year award for the Eastern Cape.Describing the award as “an honour and a privilege”, Matshidzula, who originally hails from Limpopo, says he hopes his achievement will inspire the youth to transform agriculture in South Africa. While the road has not been easy, Matshidzula has worked hard to put the farm he is in charge of, Little Barnet, firmly on the map.He was the recipient of the Mangold Trophy earlier this year in recognition of the most well-conserved farm in the Bathurst region as well as the Bathurst Conservation Committee’s prize for the most improved farm, in 2015.Under a share-milking scheme, Matshidzula, with the initial assistance of a mentor, has turned the neglected farm into a thriving success. There are 800 cows and Matshidzula is a 40 per cent shareholder. Infrastructure has been repaired and redone, and Little Barnet is almost 100 per cent functional. The future looks bright for this farmer, who attends Agri Eastern Cape meetings, takes part in farmer study groups and works on his B Tech degree in his spare time. His philosophy is not a difficult one. “Stay humble,” he says, “and work hard.”

Gauteng: CP KriekChristoffel (CP) Kriek was named Agri Gauteng’s Young Farmer of the Year at the organisation’s annual general meeting. He was born on 6 July 1985 and is married to Gerda. The couple have one child. CP holds a B Eng (Hons) in industrial engineering from the University of Pretoria. He has been farming on the farm Taaiboschspruit in the Fochville area for the past four years and operates a 2 000-sow unit for commercial purposes. His vision for the future is to become the preferred supplier of quality pork in South Africa. He wants to play a leading role in the pork industry through innovation and wants to restructure the farming operation into a profitable and sustainable business. One of the changes he has already effected was the introduction of the ‘Theory of Constraints’ principle into his farming operation. His view is that young farmers have a responsibility to enter agriculture and the economy with energy and new ideas in order to ensure the survival of the industry. He is a member of the Premier Pork Producers’ Organisation board and is involved in the Western Transvaal Pork Study Group.

Northern Cape: Vickie BruwerThe 28-year-old Vickie Bruwer was named Agri Northern Cape’s Young Farmer of the Year at the organisation’s annual congress. He and his wife Chrisna have been farming on the farm Genade in the Douglas district for the past six years. The farm Genade consists of three farming units, focusing mainly on maize, wheat and other crops, cattle and game.He regards the establishment of a sustainable rotation system and expansion of irrigation on the farms as the most important improvements he has made. To be able to farm more effectively, Vickie makes use of advanced technology such as propulsion at different speeds for his water pumps to ensure consistent pressure. He considers flooding as well as wind as his most serious challenges. To prevent wind damage, he plants oats among his groundnuts. His vision for the future is to expand his farming operation by at least 10 per cent per year.Vickie is of the opinion that young farmers should become involved as mentors for new entrants to agriculture. He is a member of the Riet-Vaal farmer association and is involved in his local school’s maize and cattle project.

Limpopo: PJ StrydomPetrus (PJ) Strydom of Marble Hall was named as Agri Limpopo’s Toyota Young Farmer of the Year at Agri Limpopo’s congress dinner earlier this year. PJ is a production manager at Piet Engelbrecht Trust. He was born on 18 May 1982 and has been farming for 16 years, eight of which at Piet Engelbrecht Trust. He is married to Yolandie and the couple have two children. The main changes effected over the past five years include the implementation of conservationist farming through minimum-cultivation of fields and upgrading of the irrigation system. As production manager he strives to produce the best quality and quantity of fruit for the market. Citrus is his main farming operation, followed by wheat, soya beans and pecan nuts.According to PJ, young farmers ensure the sustainability of agriculture. He serves on the local school governing board and also as deacon of his church. Via the farm, he is also involved in two emerging farmer projects in the area in terms of a partnership. PJ is member of Agri Loskop.

Inseparable – Etanorm sweetens up my day, right from breakfast. One of the largest sugar producers in the world, uses Etanorm as an important element in its production. The company processes sugar beet, while in other parts of the world sugar is extracted from sugar cane or starch with the help of the pump. Etanorm is used for this purpose because it ensures a high level of operating reliability. This is of extreme importance in sugar production.
