The Do’s and Don’ts of a Successful OJT
1. Monitor frequently throughout the life of the OJT.
2. If at all possible, all parties and individuals who will touch the OJT in any
capacity should meet with the employer before the begin date, to discuss
expectations and how the process will look moving forward.
3. Communicate! Remember the participant still needs to be contacted
regularly to assess any new needs, and to ensure the OJT is operating and
progressing as planned, for the benefit of the participant.
4. Hold each party accountable to the Contract. If a problem occurs address it
early. Set the standard and enforce it.
5. Board’s may need to assess or amend their
OJT Invoicing procedures to ensure
employers are submitting invoices as they
are completed, so Boards can perform
tracking, reimbursement, and monitoring in
real time.
6. Document . . . Document . . . Document!
The Do’s and Don’ts of a Successful OJT
1. Do not forget to document with clear and concise case notes the
services provided throughout the OJT and the regular communication
as well.
2. Do not accept an evaluation with no feedback regarding the
participant’s performance. Would you accept an evaluation with no
feedback about your performance?
3. (For Reverse Referrals) Don’t allow the participant to start work for the
business before all contract documents are signed and reviewed.
4. Don’t fail to monitor!
5. DO NOT become complacent in your
procedures. Develop, implement,
maintain, and expect the correct actions
to be taken all the time.
