Ernie and Janet lived just down the street in Silverton, Ore. Now they abide four miles outside Dent in West Yorkshire, and have done so for about 10 years. We became good friends, and so each time we visit the U.K., we try to see them. It’s always fun to catch up and hear about their families and projects. Janet, a physician, gardens; Ernie, a theologian, builds ponds.

Their house, even older than Luther Memorial Church, dates from the early 17th century. It’s a cozy place, but one April, I nearly froze in my garret room overlooking the windswept hills of Dent Dale. Built of stone, I imagine the house looks much as it did in 1625. Yet, on the inside, much has changed: electricity, running water, elegant paint and computers!

Old buildings require great care. Even so, well-tended old buildings bear the spirit of abide: countless human events, interactions, disputes, reconciliations, endings and beginnings. This is especially true of church

buildings wherein multiple generations have gathered to worship, ponder the divine mysteries, receive the crucified and risen Christ, be forgiven and inspired to daily service. As our banners proclaim, we abide here that we might live and serve there—in daily life.

This year’s stewardship drive takes up the Stewardship and Resource Development Committee’s challenge to restore our abiding place. God has given us this magnificent abode. Constructed as an enduring witness to the Christ who abides amid the university, our building is a tremendous gift. The building itself bids us ponder all God’s gifts as we take part in the life and ministry of Luther Memorial Church. The Lord entrusts this mighty fortress to us now as a legacy for future generations that they in their time might also receive the gifts and share the grace. Their future invites our present sacrifice. Are we up to the challenge? Will we share the joy? Yes, with the help of God!

The 17th Annual

ALL SAINTS SUNDAY

CHORAL EVENING PRAYER

Sunday, Nov. 75 p.m.

Luther Memorial choirs and instrumentalists offer prayers

for All Saints Sunday.

“Grant us grace so to follow thy blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living,

that we may come to those ineffable joys which thou hast prepared for those who

unfeignedly love thee…”

The 17th annual All Saints Sunday Choral Evening Prayer takes place Sunday, Nov. 7. The evening prayer service features the three Luther Memorial vocal choirs and the Handbell Choir. Broaden your Lord’s Day observance with this opportunity for prayer and reflection. Deepen your sense of the Communion of Saints, a veritable river of Christian witness energizing the church—saints known to us and saints known only to God. A new feature of the service will be aisle candleholders, purchased with memorial monies. You can expect to see these candleholders at special services throughout the year.

Taste of LM a great successThanks to all who participated in the Taste of Luther Memorial Ministry Fair & Pig Roast on Sunday, Oct. 10, benefiting Luther Memorial’s Preschool Scholarship Fund. It was wonderful to see so many preschool families, students and parishioners in attendance, making the event a huge success. The teaching staff was excited and proud to show off the beautiful classrooms filled with fun projects children have been working on this fall. The Great Room was a warm and festive gathering space full of event goers who collected stamps for their “passports” from several ministry destination stops throughout the church and school. A culminating raffle featuring items generously donated from parishioners, preschool parents, local businesses, and a painting created by the preschool children, raised over $1,000 for the scholarship fund. Many thanks to the countless people who volunteered their time, energy and generosity for this memorable event!

Senior Day at Oakwood WestAll are invited to the next Luther Memorial Senior Day at Oakwood West on Monday, Nov. 15, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. The day will begin with worship in the Resurrection Chapel led by Pastor Wilson and Bruce Bengtson, followed by a program and cost lunch ($8.50) in the Nakoma Room. Please RSVP by Tuesday, Nov. 9 by signing up in the narthex or contacting Suelyn (258-3160 ext. 15 or [email protected]). Let us know if you require transportation or a special menu.

Youth Group lock-inThe Youth Group and confirmands (7th–12th grade) will be holding their fall lock-in at the church on Saturday, Nov. 6, beginning at 7 p.m. If you have any questions, please speak to Pastor Pohlman, Dave Zentner, Mandy Boyce or Dan Ruge.

Germany tripFrom June 13–23, 2011, Luther Memorial will be leading a trip to see the sites in Germany associated with Martin Luther and J.S. Bach. In addition, we’ll take in several days of the Bach festival in Leipzig. Information and registration material is at the welcome desk. In addition, the Bach festival itinerary is at the welcome desk as well. Get your registration in soon, as the tour is now nearly 2/3 full. If you have any questions, see Pastor Pohlman or Bruce Bengtson. Preschoolers donated original artwork as a raffle prize.

Angela Read and Yvonne Eide took part in the ministry fair.

Dan Ruge and Kathy Seifert display LM prayer shawls at the Taste of LM.

Dale Lavelle was born in Leominster, Mass. His family, including a brother and a sister, worshipped at Immanual Lutheran (Swedish Augustana Synod), where he was baptized, confirmed and very active in the Luther League. He came to faith during these years. After graduation, he served six years in the U.S. Air Force. He then earned a B.S. in psychology at UW-Whitewater. After 10 years working with people with disabilities, he returned to school for an M.A. in school psychology, after which he was a school psychologist for 26 years.

Dale and his wife, Linda Brewer, live in Fitchburg with their labradoodle, Sophie. Linda is a psychologist at Madison schools, and Dale is now retired. They have four grown children: two sons who live in Minneapolis, and two daughters and three grandchildren who live close enough to be seen quite often. In his spare time Dale enjoys biking, reading, snowshoeing, Concerts on the Square, going to plays, cooking, projects around the home, walking the dog, gardening and traveling with family.

A volunteer at Luther Memorial

Like many volunteers, Dale prefers to work in the background rather than in the spotlight. Since joining LM in the fall of 2006,

the couple has been involved with choir, social ministry and mission trips. He has served on church planning committees, the Outreach Committee, Christmas Gifts for Transitional Families, one term on the Council and presently, with Larry Thies, is the co-coordinator for LM’s involvement in the The Road Home, overseeing the sheltering congregations. In November, LM will be hosting four or five families during the week of Thanksgiving.

Serving in the community

Dale also serves as a board member and coordinator of Savory Sunday, a program that provides Sunday meals to the homeless at the Capitol Square. This program was begun by a group of students shortly after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. Dale says Savory Sunday is “a wonderful program that gives people who have much an opportunity to serve people who are hungry, have very little and are members of our Madison community. Your donations to this program of money or time are always welcome.”

Dale is also a volunteer and board member for the Orchid Foundation, a program developed by Rotary International that supports an orphanage and school in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He participated in mission trips to work

at the school and orphanage in 2009 and 2010. He hopes to return.

Inspiring others

After reading this article and being reminded of how much there is to be done in our own community and around the world, Dale hopes people will be inspired to continue giving and volunteering, especially during the upcoming holiday season. Dale believes LM members will always respond with great generosity to the community in times of need and asks that you check the signup board in the narthex often to find out how you can help keep our vital outreach programs running.

By volunteering, Dale says people get “the awesome experience of what it feels like to step out of their comfort zone to help others, and ultimately come to the realization that life is not worth living unless you are giving of yourself.”

The Outreach Committee is looking for volunteers to buy Christmas gifts, household supplies and personal items for needy families in the Madison area. Luther Memorial members provide gifts to families identified through the Madison Metropolitan School District program for homeless children. Participating families are homeless or have recently found housing by the time Luther Memorial members deliver the gifts.

To get involved, sign up in the narthex to:

Make a donation toward the purchase of gifts, household supplies, or personal items that cannot be purchased with food stamps or WIC.Sort gifts on Sunday, Dec. 5, 6–8:30 p.m.Knit or quilt. Luther Memorial knitters and quilters make brightly-colored scarves and mittens for children and cheery quilts for families.Purchase a gift. Take a tag from the gift board in the Narthex beginning Sunday, Nov. 14. Fill out the tag and leave the bottom slip in the box on the table. Purchase the gift requested on the top tag and bring all gifts to the church by 10:30 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 5. Please tape the tag to the top of the gifts, labeling each gift separately with the letter and number code.Deliver gifts to families on Saturday, Dec. 11, 9 a.m.–noon. At least 15 deliverers are needed. This is a great activity for all members, including families with children of all ages, high school youth group members, singles and couples. Social Ministry committee members will help load cars and provide directions for deliveries. Each group spends appoximately one hour delivering.Be a last minute shopper. Sign up to volunteer a few hours between Sunday, Dec. 5 and Friday, Dec. 10 to help purchase gifts for any tags not claimed from the board. The gifts are paid for with money from cash donations.

Parish register

December is always a generous month in which donors fulfill their annual operating and building pledges or give year-end designated gifts to the church. For gifts that require extra planning, I offer the following guidelines regarding year-end donations. Thank you for your generosity, not only for your monetary gifts, but also for the many volunteer hours that have accumulated month by month throughout the year.

2010 contribution statement deadline

2010 year-end contribution statements will include all contributions received in the church office by noon on Friday, Dec. 31, 2010. Please note that the office closes at noon that day and will not re-open until Wednesday, Jan. 5, at which time all contributions received by mail or in person will appear on your 2011 statement next year. Contact your tax advisor regarding whether contributions dated December 2010 that are not received in the church office by the contribution statement deadline are tax deductible.

Stock and mutual fund gifts

Stock and mutual fund gifts should be initiated early in December in order for the transaction to be completed by year end. Because the church office is closed Monday, Dec. 27 and Tuesday, Dec. 28, and a transaction takes three days after the trade date to process, there will not be time during the last week of December to complete these transactions before year end. Mutual funds can take 5 to 6 weeks to process from the time the fund is sold until the transaction

is complete. Because of this, please initiate all stock and mutual fund gifts early in December if not before December 1.

The following outlines a general procedure for donating stocks and mutual funds:

Contact your broker and have your broker contact me at the church office with details regarding the gift (amount, number and name of shares, date of transaction, etc.)Let me know that you have initiated this gift with your broker. I will confirm with you the distribution of the gift (operating, building, dedicated fund, etc.).Because of lower transaction fees, Luther Memorial Church uses its Schwab account to process stock and mutual fund gifts unless the donor specifies otherwise. It is the practice of Luther Memorial to sell shares as soon as they appear in the church account. As noted above, the length of time varies depending on the type of gift.If the Schwab account is used, funds are transferred electronically to the church bank account.I will send a letter of acknowledgment to you and the gift will appear on your contribution statement.

Please call me in the church office with any questions regarding end of year gifts or stock and mutual fund gifts (258-3160 ext. 14).Kim O’Leary is the church administrator at LM
