Beginning of Israel’s Captivity

• 1 Chron. 5:25-26 mention Assyria taking captive those from the east side of the Jordan

• The timing of this is difficult to pinpoint, however it was Tiglath-pileser who took them captive

• Also, the text makes it clear why they were taken captive

• This may or may not coincide with 1 Kin. 15:29

War Begins Between Judah and Israel

• 2 Kings 15:37 states that this war began during the reign of Jotham in Judah

• This war continued into the days of Ahaz, the most wicked king Judah had seen (2 Kin. 16:1-4; 2 Chron. 28:1-4)

• Pekah and Rezin are confederates in this war• There is a chronology problem during this

period (2 Kin. 5:30, 33, 16:1; 17:1)

Ahaz, Pekah, and Rezin

• Isaiah 7:1-17 gives insight into this war from God’s point of view

• This war appeared to come in phases (2 Kin. 16:5; 2 Chron. 28:5f)

• Israel took captives from Judah to Samaria• Oded the prophet rebuked Israel for taking

these captives, and they were returned (2 Chron. 28:9-15)

Ahaz Seeks Help from Assyria

• Ahaz took gifts of silver and gold from the temple and from the palace and sent it to Tiglath-pilezer asking for help

• Tiglath-pilezer agreed to help Ahaz (2 Kin. 16:9-10; 2 Chron. 28:16, 20-21)

• Ahaz desperately needed help because of the oppression from the north and the south (2 Chron. 28:17-19)

• Note the cause of this oppression

• Isaiah prophesied that even though this northern section of the land had been in anguish, it would be made glorious

• Compare Isaiah 9:1-2 with Matt. 4:12-16
