Notes From Your President Mark Schwing. . . May 2010 President's Letter
Our 49th
Annual Pancake Breakfast
held on April 25th
was another
outstanding success. We served 929
adult and 62 child breakfasts. The
adult count was down by 68 but the
child count was up by 5. I never did
receive an accurate count of the Model
A’s, Model T’s and other classics in
attendance but the parking lot was
reported to be full with some attendees
having to find surface street parking.
Feed back on fordbarn.com after the
event indicated everyone had a great
time.
At least 96 of our members were at the
event and helping out in some way or
another. That is based on the ticket
count for the special OCMAFC
drawing for a gift certificate to Mimi’s
restaurants. My special heartfelt
thanks to the following:
Carolyn and Don Ratzlaff for
managing the food purchases.
Dorothy Knox for managing the
kitchen area.
John Knox for making the car trophies
and transporting the grills.
Diana Stewart for chairing the parking
effort.
Wade Ratzlaff and Bill Douglas for
their event photography.
Don Ratzlaff and Kenny Dierkin for
collaborating on the T-shirt art.
Gerald and Cathy O’Brien for manning
the T-shirt and merchandise booth.
Jonathan Hughes for the PA system.
My wife Eileen for her efforts in
typing raffle prize letters and setting up
the raffle.
I would like to thank each and everyone
who helped out that Sunday morning.
That list would have to be at least 96
names long. Again thanks to all. You are
the heart and soul of OCMAFC. The
compliments I received from several of
the national board members are really
compliments to you for the great event.
Our breakfast revenue was down slightly
from 2009 but if the silent auction for the
donated transmission and bell housing
had opened, we would have exceed the
2009 figure. I’ll present some detailed
numbers at the May meeting
Our 50th
pancake breakfast is now less
than a year away. We already serve
“golden” pancakes so we can’t improve
upon that. I would love to hear your
suggestions as to what specials things we
might do to observe the 50th
golden
anniversary breakfast. My goal is to start
much earlier this year in planning for that
event. We will have a kick off meeting in
September to start that effort. If you have
an idea for the flyer and T-shirt design we
can get that started even sooner.
As I was thinking about this column, I
realized I owned my first Model A before
OCMAFC was formed. In 1956, with a
loan from my mother, I purchased a 1931
Deluxe Coupe for $125. By way of
comparison, roadsters were in the $400 to
$450 range back then. The seller of the
car called me late the first evening I had
the car saying he forgot to tell me he
didn’t have any anti-freeze in the radiator.
Although it was in a closed but not heated
garage, the water still froze and I had a
cracked head the next morning. A
Saturday trip to a nearby junk yard and I
had another head for less than $5. The
first summer, I drove that car 40 miles
every day to my job as a lifeguard at a
popular lake swimming area. It never
missed a beat. This Month’s Cover A collage of Pancake Breakfast photos taken by Bill Douglas & Wade Ratzlaff

OCMAFC General Meeting April 8 2010
Tissy Hatcher,
56 members in attendance; 1guest
The meeting was called to order by John Knox
and the flag salute led by Joe Goff.
Visitors: Doris Marshall introduced Karl
Kreutziger. Karl has a 1929 Standard Coupe that
he gave to his grandson. They plan to restore it
together. Both Ed Schafer (who has a 1931
standard coupe) and Ozzie Zimmer (with a 1929
pickup closed cab) joined the club last month.
Walt Otto is our newest member and he is
looking for a Model A.
Minutes: Approved as printed in the Distributor
without comment.
Treasurer’s Report: Joe Goff presented the
Treasurer’s report.
Roster Drawing: Richard and Marion Miller won
$30 in this month’s drawing.
Activities: Rick Hall gave a great technical
seminar on the steering wheel restoration at
the meeting. There will be no tours or
technicals in April.
At the board meeting on 4/8/10, it was clarified
that a signup sheet is the criteria for
determining whether members will get points
for attending events.
The Mayor of the City of Los Alamitos presented
a thank you plaque to people who participated
in the 50th Anniversary Parade on 3/27/10.
Upcoming Events: On 5/8/10 John Knox will be
heading up a “Garage Tour” of several
members’ garages. The tour will begin at 9:00
am at the Mall of Orange.
A seminar on valve adjustment and head
installation of an A400 convertible sedan will be
held at 9:30am on 5/15/10, at Phil Joujon-
Roche’s home, 450 Via Vista, Anaheim.
There will be a tour of Mt. Baldy (stopping for
lunch) and then onto Glendora Mountain Road
on 5/20/10, to begin at 9am at The Villages,
lead by John and Dorothy Knox.
The cruise for a cure on the last Saturday in
September for prostate cancer will count as a
club tour.
Pancake Breakfast: Mark Schwing will be back
on 4/13. We are looking for additional
volunteers for the kitchen, which is the hardest
job and where we need the most people.
Dorothy Knox feels we need a minimum of 15
people cooking, plus people for clean up,
loading, condiments, drinks, etc. Unfortunately,
Jim Nichols and family won’t be attending. That
leaves a hole for the cooking crew. People
should be there by 5:45am, with breakfasts
beginning at 8am. Flyers are available for the
pancake breakfast. Please recruit your friends
in the club and non-members. Ask them what
they would like to do? Wear your t-shirts to the
breakfast.
Miscellaneous:
Richard Parrish felt his 160C was a fair trade.
The car is not perfect, but very nice.
Sunshine and Sorrow: Jeanne Parrish reported
Jim Jackson, a relatively new member, had a
hospital stay and is home now. Patty Jeffries
had surgeries. Chris Foster had cancer surgery
but will be back soon. Jerry O’Brien had
recovered so quickly he is back to meetings.
Richard Higgins had surgery on his finger. Bruce
Harris tripped and broke several fingers and
now has a cast.
Monthly Breakfast: No report.

Winnie Ruth Judd by Tom Endy
In October of 1931 the cities of Los Angeles and
Phoenix were involved in two murders that became
known throughout the country as the notorious “Trunk
Murders”.
Winnie Ruth Judd was the 26-year-old daughter of a
Methodist minister, and the wife of 56-year-old
physician Dr. William C. Judd. The Judd’s had moved
to Phoenix from Indiana in
1930 because Winnie was
suffering from tuberculosis.
Dr. Judd was unable to find
work in Phoenix, so in the
summer of 1931 he moved
to Los Angeles where he
found employment at a
clinic. Winnie stayed
behind in Phoenix due to
her health.
Winnie Ruth Judd
Winnie had begun an affair with Jack Holloran, a
prosperous lumberyard owner, who was married and
had three children. Winnie had also befriended two
women, Agnes Anne LeRoi and Hedvig (Sammy)
Samuelson, who were for a time her roommates. Jack
Halloran was apparently involved with these two
women as well.
Little is known about what actually happened on the
night of October 16, 1931.
Winnie allegedly shot the two
women to death with a pistol
at their residence. She would
later claim it was self-defense.
The motive apparently had
something to do with Jack
Halloran.
Agnes LeRoi and Hedvig Samuelson
The next morning the body of LeRoi was placed in a
large trunk. The body of Samuelson would not fit in the
trunk so it was dismembered and parts were placed in a
smaller trunk. The remaining parts were placed in a
small valise.
Two days later at the Phoenix Union Station Winnie
bought a ticket to Los Angeles and checked the two
trunks through. She carried the valise with her on the
train.
Upon arrival at Los Angeles Union Station, Winnie
attempted to reclaim the trunks. However, by then a
terrible odor was coming from one of the trunks and it
was leaking a vile fluid. When the baggage claim agent
insisted Winnie unlock and open the trunks she fled the
scene. Five days later, at the urging of her husband Dr.
Judd, Winnie surrendered to the Los Angeles police.
Winnie was extradited to Phoenix and stood trial for the
murder of LeRoi. She was convicted and sentenced to
death. Seventy-two hours before the scheduled
execution on February 17, 1933, the warden requested a
sanity hearing. Winnie was judged to be insane and
committed to the state mental hospital. Winnie was
never charged for the murder of Samuelson, the one
who had been dismembered.
Over the next 40 years Winnie escaped seven times.
She would be gone for days and weeks at a time before
she was recaptured. In 1962 she escaped for the last
time and was gone for over six years before she was
discovered and apprehended. During the time she lived
in Piedmont, California under the assumed name of
Marian Lane and worked as a housekeeper for a
wealthy family. Winnie was returned to the Arizona
state mental hospital, where in 1971 the governor of
Arizona paroled her.
Winnie returned to California and lived for a number of
years in Stockton before returning to Phoenix. She
continued to live under the assumed name of Marian
Lane. She died in her sleep on October 23, 1998 at the
age of 93.
Dr. Judd remained married to Winnie until his death in
1947. Jack Halloran was implicated as an accessory to
the crime, but was never charged. Winnie claimed that
Halloran and an accomplice dismembered the body of
Samuelson, and cleaned up the mess at the murder
scene. It was also suspected that Halloran actually
committed the murders. However, the allegations were
never substantiated. The duplex where the murders
were committed at 2929 N. 2nd
St. in Phoenix still
stands today according to some historians. †

DON'T MISS IT!!!
Lunch will be at Piet and Judi Dwinger's home. We will see the Model T that he beautifully restored and that he and Judi drove as a fresh car in France. In his small garage he even did his own plating and most of his engine work. We will have lunch there potluck style, so bring something to share. Let him know if you want the BBQ fired up for our arrival. <[email protected].> Since we need to prepare space for lunch. Please, Please, let us know how many are coming in your party,
not just a last name. After lunch we will drive through Anaheim Hills to new member, Phil Joujon-Roche’s home, and get peek at our next weeks technical challenge before heading home. R.S.V.P via this email to [email protected] as we will be gone until just before the tour. Or, phone 562-418-9643. Hopefully we will be joined by a few Model T’s and members of other clubs. April Roster Drawing (Don Ratzlaff)
Well what do you know; there was a winner for the April Roster Drawing.
Richard and Marion Miller were the lucky recipients of the $30 prize. That means the May drawing will be back to $10 and perhaps it will be unclaimed and grow; then again, maybe not. I know you can hardly wait to find out! It will all be revealed on meeting night May 13th; see you there.

MORE CAR BARN SPECIALS
FOR S ALE: 1930 170-B Fordor
This Car is 1930 blind-back Briggs -bodied 2-window Model A Ford Fordor. This car has been mine for 35 years and has always been garaged. Most of that time, I delighted in driving her. Shortly after I began to take the sedan apart for a long-anticipated restoration, I became sufficiently disabled as not to be able to work on the car any longer. She is a definite project car, but a good one. Much to be done, but well worth the effort. Though I cannot work on her and will miss her terribly, I owe it to this much-loved Fordor to find a home where she can be treated to a restoration. Asking $5000 but will consider reasonable offers. Car can be seen on my website (www.mellow60s.com) under Auto Gallery/1930 Ford. I also will provide any who are interested good photos of her as she is now. Please contact me @ 512-352-5144 or on my cell @ 912-965-0205 05/10 Thank You, John Payton
