Function of the Digestive System� The breakdown of food into small molecules.
� Then absorbed into the body for energy.
Major Organs: Oral Cavity
� More commonly referred to as the mouth.
� This is where the digestion process begins.
� Food physically chewed; broken down with saliva.
� Mechanical digestion is done by teeth.
� Chemical digestion is accomplished with saliva.

� More commonly referred to as the throat.
� The passageway that connects the mouth and the esophagus.
Major Organs: Esophagus
� Muscular tube where food passes.
� Food is passed through the esophagus through peristalsis.
� Muscle action that squeezes food through the esophagus.

� Located at the end of the esophagus.
� Breaks down food molecules into smaller molecules.
� Molecules eventually absorbed into small intestine,
Major Organs: Small Intestine
� Located between stomach and large intestine.
� Contains small finger like ridges called villi.
� Absorbs nutrients from food into blood stream.

� A large gland behind the stomach.
� Produces digestive enzymes and insulin
� These “juices” regulate digestion and blood sugar levels

� Large rounded glandular organ
� Located in the abdomen of vertebrates
� involved in processing digestive products and neutralizing toxins

� Also known as Large Intestine.
� Absorbs remaining water from indigestible molecules.
� Stores and eliminates waste from body.

� Acts as a temporary storage for waste.
� Rectal wall stimulates desire to remove waste matter.
