President’s LetterIf you were lunching at the Club on August 25 you may have been served some rather delicious cake. To celebrate the Club’s 149th Birthday our kitchen team produced some rather spectacular cakes which were shared with the members dining in Bankside and the MDR.

Another milestone is this September. It’s Suffrage month, 125 years ago on September 19 the Electoral Act 1893 was passed giving all women in New Zealand the right to vote. As a result of this landmark legislation New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world in which all women had the right to vote in Parliamentary elections. It’s still something to be proud of.

In 1990, at the Northern Club Annual General Meeting, members were warned of the fact that if their Club didn’t change or improve, demand for membership could melt away to a trickle and the Club, unable to offer anything special to the next generation, would become a relic of the past. An agenda for change was introduced with amongst other things, women being able to be proposed for membership. It was a chance for the Club to ‘again stand tall.’

Today women only make up 13 percent of the Northern Club membership and for some time now the committee has been endeavouring to grow this number. As you know every five years every member has a chance to gift the joining fee to someone they would like to propose for membership.

This September to acknowledge Suffrage month the General Committee has decided that every member be given the opportunity to gift the joining fee to a woman whom they think would be a good fit and whom they would like to propose for membership of the Club through the usual process. This is a one-off offer only valid for the month of September. We encourage you to propose a daughter, a niece, a woman you work with or a woman you think would make a good member of the Club. It is fitting too, that in Suffrage month Her Excellency, the Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy Governor General will also be addressing the Club.

An ongoing theme of my editorials has been the importance of friendship thanks to membership of the Club. A young member approached me at a dinner recently and asked if it would be possible for there to be more occasions where young members could rub shoulders with the older membership. He spoke of his desire to hear more of the thoughts and views of our diverse membership.I assured him I was sure that many of our regular luncheon groups would be delighted to have some younger faces at their table and to hear from them too. So if your luncheon group is keen on a younger member joining you occasionally do let the office now and we will make a list of those young members interested in being invited and the groups who meet.

It’s through listening to each other we begin to understand each other, and this will make for a strong and happy Club.

Warm wishes,

Victoria Carter ONZM

Tuvan Throat Singing PerformanceFriday 2 November, 7:00pm

Yes we are serious! This will be an experience you will never forget. We are extremely privileged to have the opportunity to hear one of the world masters of throat singing perform exclusively at the Club. Throat singing is one of the world’s oldest forms of music. In the vast, cold grasslands of Tuva between Siberia and Mongolia, throat singing (or Khoomeii) has been part of the traditional way of life for centuries. Khoomeii is the art of singing two or more notes at a time by manipulating the muscles of the throat together with subtle movements of the lips, tongue, jaw and larynx. Join us for an extraordinary performance by Evgeny Saryglar who began throat singing as an 11-year-old herding animals with his grandfather. Later he studied with the great masters of throat singing and Evgeny is now the laureate of throat singing in Tuva.
