President’s LetterIt’s been 9 months since I was elected to be President and so much has happened in that time. At the New Year we all tend to look ahead and see what we hope to accomplish in the next 12 months. The Club is no different.

2019 is going to be a big year in our history for many reasons.

In the first quarter we will open the Bankside extension, the biggest construction project in our history. It will not only make our Club a more attractive place to look at from parts of the City but it will be a much more member accessible and enjoyable entertaining space.

We will also begin the task of recruiting for a new General Manager.

The next significant event is that in the second half of the year we will celebrate the Club’s 150th years. Work has begun on the planning for this and details on the range of events will follow in due course.

It’s been suggested to me that since the Bankside project is so significant, we should consider leaving a time capsule for future members to discover. It’s a great idea so I welcome your ideas on what we might put inside the container. For example, given the change in size in mobile phones over the last twenty years there might be some mirth at seeing things from what will be our yesterday! Or perhaps we put a set of coins or stamps (will we even have them in the future?) and a copy of the Herald. What do you think should go in? Do drop me an email or let the office know of your ideas.

Sadly while the Club was closed, we had three members pass away: Mr Robert Walters, Mr Geoffrey Bonham and Mr Alan Towers.

It is unusual to draw attention to the death of a member but Alan Towers who joined as a young member was a huge supporter and regular user for some 26 years, some joked it was his other office. He was much loved by the staff. His warm and friendly manner and his colourful clothing meant he got to know more members than most. His friends have joked that the club could experience a sharp decline in the sale of his signature drink the Kumeu River Pinot Gris. Alan was also one of the most prolific recruiters of new members to the Club and his name as a frequent proposer meant he became very familiar to the committee. Alan was a very special man who died too young. We send sincerest condolences to all the families and their loved ones.

Warm wishes,

Victoria Carter ONZMPresident

Belle du Nord’ for the WinOur beloved filly, Belle du Nord, ended last year on a high taking out first place at the Cal Izuzu Stakes (1600m) at Te Rapa.

The Karaka graduate claimed a valuable Group 2 win to sit alongside her multiple big race placings. After dropping out to the rear of the classy eight-horse field in the Te Rapa fillies and mares’ feature, jockey Vinnie Colgan angled the four-year-old to the outside to make her run. Contenders lined up across the track in an exciting finish, but Belle du Nord’s potent finishing burst carried her to a half-length victory over the defending champion,Lizzie L’Amour.

Raced by the Northern Club Racing Syndicate No. 12, managed by Sir David Williams KNZM, QC, Belle du Nord has now earned more than 3.8 times her purchase price.

To Mark 150 YearsAre you or your family members long standing members of the Club? In celebration of our 150th year we have some very exciting plans to reveal over the coming months and we are calling for you to share any nostalgic memories, recollections or funny stories you have. Please email your submissions [email protected].

A brief reminder that all devices must be switched to silent before entering the Club. Talking on the phone is not permitted in public areas. However texting is acceptable.Should you need to make a phone call please ask our staff if a private room is available or use the Business Centre located on level two.
