Dear Friends,

Whilst Pauline takes part in a three month sabbatical I have been invited to write these ‘Rectors Notes’; as I write Pauline is spending time at the Franciscan Community at Hillfield, we wish her a profitable and prayerful time reflecting.

But, what a wet, dreak and dreary Easter holiday, so much rain and gloom. However, I hope like me you managed to find some sunshine. We celebrated Easter Day with some panache, Bishop Edward Condry taking the service at Kinston Deverill, followed by some celebratory Prosecco and Pauline’s cakes. It was very encouraging to have the church absolutely full to overflowing. Bishop Ed has been a good friend and supporter of our Benefice over the past 5 years, joining us on many occasions. In his sermon he remembered with affection the Benefice Lent Walk that he joined, which started in Chapmanslade and we then walked to all our 7 churches ending in Longbridge. There was also another lent walk through the valley and the ‘starry’ night he spent in a shepherds hut on the downs. We wish him and Sarah well in his retirement and a safe move. The other highlight, on the best sunny day over Easter I managed an outing with two grandchildren to Peppa Pig land and was rewarded by seeing their joy and excitement in the sunshine.

Easter is one of the high points of the liturgical year, when after a period of spiritual reflection throughout Lent, the crucifixion on Good Friday, we mark the resurrection of Christ with joy and celebration – Easter Egg hunts, chocolate and happy children. It is also a time that is synonymous with new life and new birth; from the resurrection of Jesus to the fields full of new lambs that we see around us. In the midst of our turbulent, unsettled world let us give thanks for the beauty we see here. We feel helpless in the face of growing threats of war and conflict, but however dark it seems remember the Christian understanding of hope, new life will arrive, love will prevail with God.

By the time you read this Spring should be edging into Summer as we see and enjoy the green shoots in the hedgerows and in our lives, a rebirth, a glimmer of hope. As St Francis of Assisi wrote, “All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle”.

With love and prayers

Robert Shuler (Church Warden, Kingston Deverill)

Nature Notes Yesterday beautiful; the first proper spring day with warm sunshine

and NO rain! Sadly today has taken a step backwards with persistent rain, not too heavy, but much lower temperatures. I saw my first swallow yesterday flying high over the village, as I walked down Sand Street. I also saw a brimstone butterfly and a rather ragged peacock butterfly. The weather forecast for the week promises better conditions, temperatures even reaching 20C. We really need some settled weather so everything can catch up; this winter has gone on too long. Crops have not been sown, fields have not even been ploughed, and animals have been housed much longer using more silage, straw and hay, all very difficult and costly.

The hawthorn is starting to break and the beech tree at the front of the house is coming into leaf too. It is lovely to see the countryside starting to turn green. I think with the predicted warmer temperatures there will be a dramatic change; everything has been on hold for so long that there will be rapid growth and activity. I am sure the daffodils have been flowering for longer this year and sadly some buds have rotted on the stems. Now the primroses are looking good and the cowslips are coming into bud.

I am pleased to say that the frog spawn did survive and there are now lots of tadpoles swimming around in the shallows at the far end of the pond. They have not ventured far from where they hatched; from my observations frogs like slightly warmer conditions and deeper water is colder. We still had a fair number of toads about just over a week ago but they now seem to have all left the pond. While they were about the buzzard visited quite often usually being successful in catching a poor toad as it vacated the pond. This morning we had a visit from a heron, the first time for ages, probably after the goldfish. I have not seen a kingfisher for months on the river or in the garden and I am wondering whether they have survived this bad winter. I think they tend to migrate to the coast where it should be warmer. Hopefully they will appear soon. I have not seen so many egrets recently either so some of them may have moved south too. The river has been so high and flowing very fast that fishing for egret, heron or kingfisher would have proved difficult if not impossible. Several times recently I have watched the male swan, cob, struggling to make headway against the current and he is really strong and powerful.

Mallards have visited the pond on and off, two drakes and a duck and I witnessed them mating. We have a splendid cock pheasant that struts around the garden, at first he had one hen with him but now he has attracted another - two ladies! They really are very smart looking birds when you get to see them close up.

Most of the winter migrants have gone now (fieldfares, redwings, bramblings) and the summer visitors are beginning to arrive. I have heard chiffchaffs and a male blackcap singing. Soon there will be swallows in the village again followed by house martins and a chorus of blackcaps, not just the lone one!

A new vision for Visually Impaired People across the West of England

A new organisation in the West of England is being launched in May to provide direct and consistent

services to blind and partially sighted people across Bristol, Bath, South Gloucester, Swindon and Wiltshire.

Vision West of England will work closely with key partners including Visionary, other local sight loss charities, national organisations, statutory bodies and most importantly blind and partially sighted people on developing services that respond sensitively and positively to the needs of visually impaired people and those at risk of losing their sight. The organisation is receiving support and advice from the Thomas Pocklington Trust and Wiltshire Sight. There will be two hubs in Bristol and Wiltshire where direct services will be based.

Vision West of England will work with partners towards developing a single point of contact for blind and partially sighted people across this area within the South West region, ensuring that visually impaired people have a voice. It will also work closely with Visionary, the local sight loss membership organisation, to align with their ongoing initiative to develop and provide good practice guidance for the delivery of services across the whole of the UK.

Leanne Hubbard, currently CEO of Wiltshire Sight, will take up the post of Interim CEO of Vision West of England. Speaking about the new organisation, Leanne said: “Our goal is to provide support for visually impaired people and those at risk of losing their sight, that aims to give them increased choice, improved access to the right services and support that will have a positive impact on their quality of life and independence. We will also collaborate with our partners on strengthening our knowledge of the causes of sight loss and how the effects of eyesight problems can be alleviated. We will offer a range of services from our 2 dedicated Hubs for visually impaired people, their families and carers. Those services will include information, advice and support; peer and family support; resources and technology; social activities; advocacy and training. I am very keen to speak to visually impaired people and people from partner organisations about the new organisation and how it will operate. Anyone who has any questions or feedback is welcome to contact me or the team either by email or phone.”

To contact the team go to [email protected] / call 01380 723682 Note – The Wiltshire Hub will operate from the current Wiltshire Sight Building

St Lucy’s Sight Centre Browfort, Bath Road, Devizes SN10 2AT. The Bristol Hub will operate from The Vassall Centre, Gill Ave Bristol. Further details on the services provided will be released shortly.

Book & Dining Club The next meeting will be on Wednesday 2nd May 7.00 for 7.30

pm, at The Agra Restaurant, Warminster. If you would like to come for a meal and discuss the books please contact Linda Searle 213767. The two books chosen to are:

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles: in 1922 Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal and sentenced to indefinite house arrest. While Russia undergoes decades of upheaval, the Count, stripped of all trappings, is forced to question what makes us who we are.

Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz: editor Susan Ryland has worked with bestselling crime writer Alan Conway for years. Readers love his detective, Atticus Pünd, a solver of crimes in sleepy English 1950s villages. But Conway's latest tale of murder at Pye Hall is not quite what it seems, hidden in the manuscript pages lies another story. From the creator of Midsomer Murders comes a fiendish mystery perfect for fans of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot.

Deverills Archaeology Group - Inaugural meeting The inaugural meeting of the Deverills Archaeology Group will take

place at 7.30 pm on Thursday 10th May in the Upper Deverills Village Hall. All are very welcome. Please spread the word!!

We will also be joining other WI Members of the Wessex Group on the 17th May in Sutton Veny. If you would like to know more about the WI in the Deverill Valley please contact Julie Wallder on 213142.

Christian Aid week 13th - 19th May Together we are stronger than the storms.

Will you help a family like Marcelin’s weather future storms?

‘If another hurricane comes, we’d just die'. Marcelin lost his home and livelihood when Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti in September 2016. ‘I lost pigs, goats, everything in the house. I have noth-ing left,’ he says. He now lives in an old concrete shower block, a tiny space he shares with his teen-age daughters. There are no windows or doors, and the only furniture is a single bed that the girls sleep on. Marcelin has shown incredible resilience in the face of such hardships and is working hard to raise his children alone. Will you #StandTogether with your global neighbour Marcelin and give a donation to help build a disaster-proof home in Haiti? Every day he gets up at dawn to work the land but he’s struggling to support his family. The changing weather frequently destroys the food he grows and his family often go hungry. He can no longer afford to send all his children to school and is unable to save any money for a new home. So, this Christian Aid Week, will you build hope in Haiti? We know how to make it happen – of the 700 houses we built after the 2010 earthquake, just one needed to be repaired after Hurricane Matthew. But we are relying on the kindness of people like you to be able to do more, and reach more of our global neighbours in their hour of need. Christian Aid week will be launched on Sunday 13th May at the 10.30 am service at Kingston Deverill. Donation envelopes will be available at the service and in all our churches during the week. Please give generously to those who need help across the world and then return your envelope to a church warden or Judy Munro, Christian Aid co-ordinator, or call 844385 and she will collect them from you. Thank you.

The Longbridge Deverill Flower Show The Show will take place on Saturday 11th August.

So it is time to get planting, building, pruning, and baking. The class list for this year’s show has been announced and is available to see on the website (www.longbridgedeverillflowershow.co.uk) so please take a look and get your entries ready!

All budding jockeys should get into training as The Hobby Horse race will be returning. More details will be released nearer the time.

Upper Deverills Parish Council Rainfall Monitoring

The Environment Agency and the Met Office have around 50 voluntary rainfall observers across South Wessex who read the rainfall every day. This data is of great value and helps with understanding rainfall patterns across the UK. Currently there is a gap in the Mere and Deverills Area. You will need to be able to read a rain gauge every morning at 9.00 am GMT and have a spacious garden ie. the gauge must not be over sheltered and objects need to be roughly twice as far away from the gauge as they are high. If you are interested in becoming an official registered Met Office volunteer rainfall observer and become part of our network then please contact

Tom Waggett at the Environment Agency Tel: 01258 480274 or Email: [email protected].

Next meetings: Wednesday 9th May the Annual Assembly of the Parish is at 6.00 pm and then the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council is at 6.30 pm in the Upper Deverills village hall. We look forward to seeing you.
