2007Single Buyer Office established within Eskom; currently executing the mandate of the Independent Power Producer (IPP) pro-curement programme
Revealing the latest developments of the CSP indus-try in South Africa for 2015, CSP Today has created the following timeline, compiling the most impor-tant events and industry data from the Single Buyer Office to the Kathu and Redstone’s CSP projects.
The timeline has been produced in partnership with the launch of CSP Today South Africa 2015 (14-15 April, Cape Town). The meeting brings together leading developers, EPCs, legislators and utilities to further the deployment of CSP in South Africa.

2010Plans unveiled for the 5,000 MW Northern Cape So-lar Corridor, a multi-billion rand zone for solar-gene-rating plants and manufac-turing facilities. The solar park would stretch between ZF Mgcawu and Pixley ka Seme regions
Mar 2011Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2010-2030 announced, rolling out a 20-year national electricity road-map that would be revised by the Department of Energy every two yearsJul 2011
Renewable Energy Bids system replaces Feed-in-Tariff program to promote a competitive tariff scheme by applying a ceiling amount for each technology
Aug 2011Renewable Energy Inde-pendent Power Procure-ment Program launched to help achieve the IRP’s renewable energy capacity target of 3,725 MW, inclu-ding 1,200 MW of CSP
Dec 2011 A consortium formed by Abengoa and the Industrial Develop-ment Corporation is awarded two CSP projects under Window 1: the 50 MW Khi Solar One and the 100 MW Kaxu Solar One
May 2012 A consortium led by ACWA Power International and Solafrica is awarded the 50 MW Bokpoort CSP project under Window 2
Aug 2013Abengoa and IDC complete the construction of the tower in Khi Solar One CSP project
Oct 2013Abengoa is awarded the 100 MW Xina Solar One and Emvelo the 100 MW Ilanga CSP 1 under Window 3
Nov 2013An updated version of the IRP 2010-2030 proposes an increase in CSP capacity allocation from 1,200 MW to 3,300 MW
July 2014A renewable energy capacity of 1,105 MW is made avai-lable under Window 4, but no allocation is made to CSP.
Dec 2014Two projects achieve preferred bidder status under the CSP-specific Window 3.5: the 100 MW Redstone CSP project proposed by SolarReserve and ACWA Power and the 100 MW Kathu CSP project proposed by GDF Suez

what next?
2017
KHI SOLAR ONE, KAXU SOLAR ONE and BOOKPORT expected to enter commercial operation
ABENGOA’S XINA SOLAR ONE expected to come online
ILANGA CSP 1 expected to come online
Industry stakeholders remain optimistic that upcoming windows will include CSP
CSP PROJECT DEVELOPMENTThe market for CSP is growing at an exponential rate with the first installed projects due to come online in 2015.
With a growing electricity generation deficit that needs to be filled with on demand power, CSP is set to be a vital part of the South African energy mix.
South Africa is the world’s most exciting market for CSP.
To date, 600MW of CSP has been awarded un-der the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPPP). This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to hitting the Government target of 1200MW.

The key to the ongoing growth of the CSP market in South Africa is simple. All key industry players must come together to discuss ways to improve efficiencies, reduce costs and therefore show policymakers that CSP is the way to go in the country.
The CSP Today South Africa 2015 (14-15 April, Cape Town) forum already has commitment from key industry leaders including Eskom, ACWA Power, GDF Suez, Abengoa, SolarReserve, Investec and many more.
The goal of the event is to tackle key issues
fac ing the industry in South Africa head on. This will be done through a mixture of technical expertise,
international know-how
and national case study
experiences.
