The Approach

� To mirror existing eLearning development methods by employing the same tools and technologies to ultimately facilitate adaptability.

� To develop two learning modules for a Sony Ericsson p900 series Smartphone.

� 2 Learning Modules Produced

1. WCDMA RAN Overview.2. Service Layer : An Introduction.


Learning Module 1

� WCDMA RAN Overview for the smartphone.- A Web based approach.- Course Duration : 3 hours.- The learning material is hosted on a web server

and accessed using the smartphones web browsing capabilities.

- The Opera browser acts as a client to view the learning material.


How? – Development Tools

� Macromedia Dreamweaver MX Version 1.0

� Opera Browser- XHTML & Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)support.

� Adobe Photoshop 5.5


Technologies� Cascading Style

Sheets (CSS) Levels 1 & 2

- CSS enables authors to separate presentation type from document content

- Style rules define presentation& formatting can be containedin a single files.

- Facilites the implementation ofwell structured, maintainablexhtml documents.


Technologies

� Java Script- a scripting language for creating simple code to control the behaviour of web document objects

� Document Object Model (DOM)- the ability to change the appearance of a web page dynamically


Design & Development� Web Based Design� A user interface screen

was created with a column container that holds all the content

� The container holds a table element and the course material iframe.

� The user-interface page was designed to behave dynamically

� At any one time, one specific icon or heading is displayed at each location.


Design & Development

Challenge of how to present diagrams in a concise, uncluttered way.

Key colour codes were employed in some areas

A scaled down , simplified image-map version with different clickable areas was used to provide links to separate full size sub section view of the original graphic.


Course 1 Conclusion

� The Courseware received very positive feedback from student evaluation.

� A Comprehensive and Technically complex subject matter was represented very effectively.

� Course Duration, Navigation, Scrolling and Network Delay were highlighted as areas for improvement.


Learning Module 2

� Service Layer : An Introduction for the smartphone.- A Macromedia Flashlite approach.- Course Duration : 30 mins.- Course material and a self assesment test.- The learning material is stored and run locally on

smartphone, once downloaded.


How ? – Development Tools

� Macromedia Flash MX Professional 2004- Flashlite support.- Animation Studio for mobile phone content.- The Flashlite player requires handset support.- Currently Developer Licensed.- Comparable to Flash 4.0 for PC development.- File Compression algorithm.- Flashlite player required not browser supported.- Active Developers forum.

� Adobe Photoshop 5.5- Image creation and manipulation.

Design & Development� A Multimedia Based Design� A small flashlite movie or application

was created which contained the learning module content.

� The movie is downloaded and stored locally on the smartphone.

� The movie contains graphics, animation, text and sound with student interactivity.

� The user-interface is a simple point and click self-paced navigation through slides and a questionnaire.


Course 2 Conclusion

� The approach for the second learning product was introduce simplicity to the user experience and the course development.

� Flash is a development tool

� Initial testing indicates that the course is seen as Easy to Use and Navigate, Responsive and Easy to Distribute and Share.
