SECURING DONATIONS IN HOUSES OF WORSHIP JOHNNIE L MOCK PSP

Houses of Worship come in all religions and denomi-

nation and can range in size from just a handful of

people to the super mega churches with thousands of

members But one thing the vast majority have in

common is a financial reliance of the membership

Keeping these donated funds secure from the hands

of the donor to the bank is an integral part of their

security program

In 2014 $60000000 in cash and checks were stolen

from Houston non-denominational mega church

Lakewood Church pastored by Joel Osteen This

was a physical theft of two dayrsquos donations and in-

cluded $200 0000 cash and the rest in checks and

credit card donations with the donorrsquos credit card in-

formation included This can happen to any religious

institution but there are some basic safeguards that

will mitigate the risk

Offerings and petty cash need to be adequately se-

cured Some churches use a pass the plate approach

others provide drop boxes for anonymous donation

Drop boxes need to be strong enough to resist easy

break in and secured properly to the floor or wall

There are a number of additional simple safeguards

All personnel who will be handling finances should

be completely vetted with a proper background

check All donations should be counted with at least

two people present Money received should be de-

posited regularly and by at least two people

These are just some of the procedures that a House of

Worship needs to implement to safeguard their funds

The free physical security survey that we offer

through our ASIS House of Worship program will

enable a House of Worship to set up a system to se-

cure their donations and proceeds If you know of a

religious institution that would benefit from our free

service please have them contact me at

When the 15-year-old access control system at Calvary Chapel

Fort Laudershydale (CCFL) in Florida began to fail Senior Sys-

tems Administrator Benny Brown knew it was time for a

change Repairing and maintaining the current access control

system in the eight buildings that make up the CCFL

megachurch and the pre-K to 12th grade school was costing too

much and the system was so old that manufacturers said the

new system would have to be designed from scratch

ldquoThat opened the door for us to shop the whole market for ac-

cess control productsrdquo says Brown who started looking for a

new solution in May 2014

CCFL wanted to move beyond a network-based system to a

Web-based portal for programming and management as well as

to find something that could take advantage of the extensive

network structure across the sprawling 75-acre campus

ldquoOur campuses use Macs PCs and even Linux and compatibil-

ity with client applications is always a little bit of a concernrdquo

Brown says ldquoHaving the management be Web-based alleviated

a little bit of thatrdquo

Brown also wanted to find a solution that would help CCFL

maintain its open-campus feel for both students and parishioners

much and the system was so old that manufacturers said the

new system would have to be designed from scratch

ldquoThat opened the door for us to shop the whole market for ac-

cess control productsrdquo says Brown who started looking for a

new solution in May 2014

CCFL wanted to move beyond a network-based system to a

Web-based portal for programming and management as well as

to find something that could take advantage of the extensive

network structure across the sprawling 75-acre campus

ldquoOur campuses use Macs PCs and even Linux and compatibil-

ity with client applications is always a little bit of a concernrdquo

Brown says ldquoHaving the management be Web-based alleviated

a little bit of thatrdquo

Brown also wanted to find a solution that would help CCFL

maintain its open-campus feel for both students and parishioners

The free physical security survey that we offer

through our ASIS House of Worship program will

enable a House of Worship to set up a system to se-

cure their donations and proceeds If you know of a

religious institution that would benefit from our free

service please have them contact me at

security program
