Active This Summer!

Executive Director
One of the things to keep in mind as we are out and about this July, is not to forget your sunscreen. The sun, as glorious as it feels on our skin by the pool, is responsible for 90% of all non-melanoma skin cancers. All sunscreens have a sun protection factor (SPF) which measure how well the sunscreen protects the skin against harmful UV rays. The brand of sunscreen is not as important as the application of the sunscreen every two hours if outdoors or swim-ming. Wearing hats and cool, loose fitting clothes can also offer protection from the sun. If you are out with your pet, please remember that if the pavement feels hot against your hand, they feel the same heat under their paws. Keep them safe as well by giving them plenty of water and keeping them in the shade.
For tips on sunscreen brands and SPF protection, check with your doctor or local drug store.
Have a fun and safe summer.

Evonn Short, Director of
Activities & Transportation
It is about that time, the five week cycle menu will
be coming in July. Like they always say, “good
things come to those who wait.” The new menu will
consist of some favorites from the past and a lot of
new entrées that you will truly love. July will also
bring a spectacular holiday menu that will leave your
taste buds begging for more. Finally, I want to thank
everyone for working with us on the new seating
times for Father’s day, we would
like to continue with that, so I
ask for your feedback; don’t
hesitate to call, I would love to
talk to you about it.
Thank you so much and let’s
enjoy this summer.

“Caught Doing Something GREAT!
OUR TEAM is happy to the gills!
The employee recognition program is meant to recognize,
reward, and motivate multiple employees for doing great
things here on our Independence Hill campus.
Born on the eleventh day of November right here in good ole San
Antonio, Texas, this fall bundle of joy is no stranger to his
hometown. Growing up, his creative side began to show at a very
young age. His parents supported his artistic nature by allowing
him to draw on his room walls to encourage his natural talent.
Because of the continued encouragement from his parents, this
mystery man grew up to explore his creative side even further by
becoming a professional graphic designer with special training in
photography, painting and art direction/production. It is no
surprise here that his hobbies would include painting, creating
artworks and even uniquely designing denim jackets. His dreams
expand further than just here in San
Antonio and despite traveling to multiple
destinations starting from the west coast of
America to the East, he still plans to travel
to Thailand one day and meet his favorite
celebrity crush Jennifer Lopez. Though his
dreams are quite big he is quite the down
to earth gentleman and you can always
find him smiling, joking and answering
any questions you may call him with.
Can you guess who this month’s mystery
employee is?

Mystery Resident
Luau Happy Hour
This native Texan was born September 27th and raised in Fort Worth. Being the only child, she was the pride
and joy of her parent’s life. Her childhood was filled with laughter and good memories of living on a farm
helping to cultivate the watermelons and staying far from the geese that loved to chase her around. Her parents
were amazing inspirations to her, her father working for General Dynamics and mother a registered nurse
while teaching advance classes at the high school; it is no surprise that she furthered her education after high
school. Her education goals took her all the way to Harding University in Arkansas to get her degree in social
studies and math with her minor in secondary education. After graduation, she took a job with Shell Oil
Company in the Exploration Department that gave her secret clearance within the company. So secret, when
she and her husband were to marry in 1960, she had to receive permission from her higher ups to ensure the
safety of their knowledge and department. With her husband posing no threat to her jobs security, they were
married for 45 years and raised two wonderful children. While serving on the student government in school,
this mystery lady also became engulfed in the world and use of parliamentary. Later becoming the Texas State
PTA President while her children were in school, this confident lady was
encouraged to study parliamentary procedure further and would eventually become
a Professional Registered Parliamentarian. For all her hard work and dedicated
service to both local and state organizations, she received the Yellow Rose of
Texas award in 2012 and still continues to practice parliamentary to this day. She is
an active participant in the Independence Hill Community activities and can always
be seen making her way to the bus for the next dinner out, wine tour, or new
adventure headed her way. Can you guess who this month’s mystery resident is?
