The Death of the Man of God
1 Kings 13; Chinese Bible, Old Testament, p. 545-546
And behold, a man of God came out of Judah by the word of Jehovah to Bethel. Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make offerings.
(1 Kings 13.1)
(1 Kings 13:2, CB OT p. 545)
“O altar, altar,thus says Jehovah: ‘Behold, a
son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name, and he shall sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who
make offerings on you, and humanbones shall be burned on you.’”
“This is the signthat Jehovah has spoken:
‘Behold, the altar shall be torn down, and the ashes that are on it shall be
poured out.’”
(1 Kings 13:3, CB OT p. 545)
(1 Kings 13:4, CB OT p. 545)
“Seize him”
(1 Kings 13:6, CB OT p. 545)
“Entreat nowthe favor of Jehovah your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be
restored to me.”
(1 Kings 13:6, CB OT p. 545)
“Entreat nowthe favor of Jehovah your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be
restored to me.”
(1 Kings 13:7, CB OT p. 545-546)
“Come home withme, and refresh yourself, and I will
give you a reward.”
(1 Kings 13:8-9, CB OT p. 546)
“Come home withme, and refresh yourself, and I will
give you a reward.”
“If you give me half your house, I will not go in with you. And I will not eat
bread or drink water in this place, for so was it commanded me by the word of Jehovah, saying, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water nor return
by the way that you came.’”
(1 Kings 13:10, CB OT p. 546)
So he went another way and did not return by the way that he came to Bethel.
“Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” “I am.”
(1 Kings 13:14, CB OT p. 546)
“Come home with meand eat bread.”
(1 Kings 13:15, CB OT p. 546)
“I may notreturn with you, or go in with
you, neither will I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place, for it was
said to me by the word of Jehovah, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water
there, nor return by the waythat you came.’”
(1 Kings 13:16-17, CB OT p. 546)
“I also am aprophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of Jehovah, saying,
‘Bring him back with you into your house that he may eat bread
and drink water.’” (1 Kings 13:18, CB OT p. 546)
(1 Kings 13:19, CB OT p. 546)
So he went back with him and ate bread in his house and drank water.
“Thus says Jehovah,‘Because you have disobeyed the
word of Jehovah and have not kept the command that Jehovah your God
commanded you, but have come back and have eaten bread and drunk water in the
place of which he said to you, “Eat no bread and drink no water,” your body
shall not come to the tomb ofyour fathers.’”
(1 Kings 13:21-22, CB OT p. 546)
(1 Kings 13:24, CB OT p. 546)

[19] So he went back with him and ate bread in his house and drank water.
And as he went away a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his body was thrown in the road, and the donkey stood beside it; the lion also stood beside the body.
Why Do We Disobey God?
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
(Matthew 28:18, CB NT p. 60)
Rebellion
Rebellion
He went up to the altar that he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, in the month that he had devised from his own heart.
(1 Kings 12:33, CB OT p. 545)
Reward
Reward
And the king said to the man of God, “Come home with me, and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.”
(1 Kings 13:7, CB OT p. 545-546)
Reward
They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing
(2 Peter 2:15, CB NT p. 416)
But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
(Genesis 3:4, CB OT p. 4)
Reward
Reward
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate
(Genesis 3:5-6, CB OT p. 4)
Reward
“Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
(Matthew 6:2, CB NT p. 9)
Deceived
Deceived
And he said to him, “I also am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of Jehovah, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house that he may eat bread and drink water.’” But he lied to him.
(1 Kings 13:18, CB OT p. 546)
But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.
(Galatians 1:8, CB NT p. 327)
Deceived
Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”
(1 Samuel 15:3, CB OT p. 442)
But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fattened calves and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them. All that was despised and worthless they devoted to destruction.
(1 Samuel 15:9, CB OT p. 442)
And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, “Blessed be you to Jehovah. I have performed the commandment of Jehovah.”
(1 Samuel 15:13, CB OT p. 442)
Deceived
And Saul said to Samuel, “I have obeyed the voice of Jehovah. I have gone on the mission on which Jehovah sent me. I have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and I have devoted the Amalekites to destruction.”
(1 Samuel 15:20, CB OT p. 443)
Deceived
But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the best of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to Jehovah your God in Gilgal.”
(1 Samuel 15:21, CB OT p. 443)
Deceived
And Samuel said, “Has Jehovah as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of Jehovah? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of Jehovah, he has also rejected you from being king.”
(1 Samuel 15:22-23, CB OT p. 443)
